The Nintendo Switch

Not better than the NES imo.

I think almost every big name sequel on snes from nes was not only a better looking and sounding game, but a better game on snes. Amazing they were able to achieve that and much more variety on snes.

Onto the product. This could do really well at $149, but it's not going to be less than the 3DS at launch and there will be $249 at a minimum...and as its a console it needs the docking station, cables, leads and a standard controller. I'd guess $299 at the least...and thats a huge problem for Nintendo because both the One S and PS4Pro will UTTERLY demolish the "home console" aspect of it by offering more games at a cheaper price with greater fidelity. Just guessing, the Switch will have a smaller library at the end of 2017 than the amount of Backwards Compatible games on Xbox One. Plainview can ban me if it doesn't.

Doesn't seem like much of a guess. Seems obvious to me. Don't know what that is supposed to mean though.

The biggest thing is, can they release gteat software fast enough. Nintendo has a horrible rep for not getting out their heavy hitters.

Their problem is good games being released that they don't make. Yeah they aren't fast but it wouldn't be an issue if they have 3rd party support especially when you consider how many games they do release. You don't really need 3 Zeldas every generation.

You don't really need 3 Zeldas every generation.

What they need is all their main heavy hitters in the first 3 years. Metroid, Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Smash brothers, Kirby, Pokémon. I don't even care if they get 2 Zeldas in a generation, but keep them coming. 3rd party support is obvious important.

Is it ok for me to love BOTH the NES and SNES? No better, because when these mini versions arrive they are going to have 30 of the best games each offered and will give cause for plenty of revisiting fun.

Why does everything have to be a competition? I'm enjoying the best of PS4, X1, PSVR, and soon PS4 Pro, Scorpion, Mini NES, and maybe Mini SNES. That is a full plate of gaming goodness to go around and the only battles I have is finding the time to enjoy it all.

Ask the posters who police opinions

I am not sure how I feel about it. I can't see lugging this thing around and playing it in public NOT being a tedious chore. Seems like a misfire for me, unless Nintendo brings the heat with the games.

I don't know what to make of the Switch. I'm going to wait for more info but for now, I'm intrigued but not enough to buy it at launch.

It should do better than Wii U. How can any system released by a big name console maker do worse?..... Ok, maybe Sega DC.

But compared to MS and Sony consoles, Switch will be another failure.

Nintendo is gravitating to mobile (they released some mobile software like Pokemon Go and Miiamoto [whatever it's called]), and Switch is a console/mobile hybrid skewing to the mobile market, but I doubt many people will bother.

Watching that teaser trailer, do you really think every teenager and 35 year old yuppie is going to go bonkers carrying it around so people can play party games at a table staring at a 6 inch screen?

Not many.

You don't even see many people pulling out a tablet playing games in public. Most people play cellphone games. The only people I really see playing tablets in public are 5 year olds in a grocery cart getting wheeled around by mom and dad.

The video is ridiculous in the part showing a guy pulling it out to play it on a plane. Sure, it's roomy, you get a pull out flat mini table, and it'll be a quiet ride. Let's see him do that riding a rattling bus. That's like saying a laptop is mobile enough to play games because I've seen people do the same thing on a plane.

I'm not going to assume failure. I did that with the Wii and couldn't have been more wrong.

I agree that it comes down to games. I think Nintendo needs to give some franchises a break and branch out a bit with some new IP's in various genres.

That's shockingly poor sales for the amalgamation of Nintendos Console and Handheld business. In 2006 Nintendo would expect 18 million Wiis and 20 million DS over a 12 month period.

Wii U and 3DS would net 15 million a year.

10 million a year would be Nintendo hardware at an all time low. Lets face it, if this thing sold at double or triple the rate of the WiiU for whatever reason, it would still not necessarily be a step forward if you're considering the elimination of the handheld sector.

I like the aesthetics of design of the dock which seems really thought out and the controller...Nintendo has made worse ones, this is more traditional, it's something inoffensive unlike the Wii.

Cartridges and it's own screen and sub generational power.... It's more handheld then console. It's a tablet that casts to your tv and you can stick controllers on the side. So the huge secretive Nature of the NX is justified and i bet Nintendo is glad no-one else thought of that

Except they did. $50 or less and will work with devices you already own...success or failure big N, if you can convince people to buy your system with the Xbox/PS as better home consoles and at worst, far cheaper alternatives to your mobile devices, you deserve it.

I don't see it personally.
Just like Wii U, the gimmick this time is mobile functionality. Grab and go with instant docking. Party gaming with a kickstand and mini-controllers.

Wii U was $300-350, had a 1 year head start vs X1 and PS4, and the current competition at launch were fully loaded 360s and PS3 with 500 gb HDDs for around $250-300 as well. Wii U's power was in the ballpark of 360/PS3. And Wii U did terrible.

Assuming Switch launches for $300, it will be going up against X1/PS4 at $300, PS4 Pro at $400, and half a year later Scorpio at let's assume $500. If the rumours are correct, Switch's power is similar to X1/PS4, so again, Nintendo is launching a system with last gen power, but a unique feature. And it doesn't even have a BR drive for people who want a device that do more than games (unless they stick to streaming).

The unique feature worked for Wii, didn't for Wii U, but Ninty is trying a third time.

I don't see people flocking to buy it at $300. Now if they somehow launch it for Ninty's traditional $200-250 price like all their consoles except Wii U, then I can see it being a hit at that bargain price. But if it goes for $300, that's head on with X1/PS4.

The Wii U announcement video got over 11m views and 42k likes and bombed.

The lastest COD has got lots of negatives but will sell s*** loads so it's impossible to say.
Exactly. Views and likes don't mean much.

The guy who sung Gangnam Style probably has 1 billion views, yet how many people bought his song or album? You never even hear about the guy anymore.

Other catchy videos that spread and get a gazillion hits..... cat and dog videos or cute videos involving babies. Doesn't mean every one will buy a cat, dog or have kids.

I think at it's core, the Switch would appear to be a pretty decent handheld in terms of power (assuming battery life is decent- 3 hours is the rumour, which if true ...its already ****ing over) and it has all the aspects of a console controller which is good on the go, but as a console it seems pretty truncated and late to the party, it will be 1000 games behind and lower power and ...we still don't know how the online will fair. They really need to undercut the other guys on price, $250 won't quite be enough (and may not even be a long lasting advantage in Holiday 17). I'm also not sure where this puts Nintendo..if the console is the tablet and the tablet is the handheld..that makes Nintendos main competitors IOS and Android and cheap chinese phablets...they will never beat those numbers.

Both were amazing. I played the SNES a lot more because it was my first true console. Parents already had an NES when i was born but i still loved it. These days i lean towards NES being better for the nostalgia effect. Just knowing you're playing the console that essentially saved gaming is cool.

Plus the games are actually really good. Even the bad ones are fun, in my opinion. When given a choice, TV, movies, or games, i usually hold the original in higher regard. N64 is my favorite Nintendo console because of the timing but i wouldn't say it's better than NES or SNES. You really can't beat the library of games they had or the effect they had on the industry.

Put me down for one. Obviously not going to be a new Smash ready by launch so I would like to see an updated one with all DLC (not that it matters since I have it already if that somehow transfers). The same for Splatoon would be nice as well. Hopefully Zelda and new Super Mario 3D would be ready. Would be a pretty good launch if there was a line up like that.

I don't think the Scorpio will exceed $449. If the PS4Pro can double the PS4s spec at $100 more, it stands to reason Scorps can increase it's spec 50% over PS4Pro for $50 more (plus an extra year).

I would expect it to launch no more than $50 more than PS4 Pro, depending on the PS4 Pro RRP in Fall 2017.

So THAT'S why Ninty was so cagey about releasing info- they were afraid someone would steal their idea! Good thing they waited so long for the reveal...

Google tablet controller

I wonder if there were a few too many words:

"Nintendo plans to ship 2 million Nintendo Switch units in its launch month, won't be sold"

That's quite reasonable, the Wii U was evidently 3.06 million in launch month.

At least they're being conservative and realistic. Momentum is what this thing needs, not just a good launch.

The guy who sung Gangnam Style probably has 1 billion views, yet how many people bought his song or album? You never even hear about the guy anymore.

His name is PSY dagnammit! 2.669 Billion vies too. I'll admit i'm a guy who doesn't conform to trends and dislike broad comedies, but dammit if i didn't replay that song 50 times. In a very dark world, the guy broke down borders and language and at least made something that speaks to all of us....a catchy K-Pop tune.

51...
