E3 2017 trailer:

Info compiled by Nirolak at GAF:

  • The game is singleplayer only.
  • The game is mostly open world, though there are some cinematic linear segments.
  • The open world is 4-6 times the size of Sunset Overdive.
  • You won't be killing anyone in the game.
  • There will be a lot of gameplay and story segments where you play as Peter Parker going about his day instead of Spider-Man. They say it will actually focus as much on Peter as it does on Spider-Man, but I don't know if that statement just applies to the story, or to the gameplay segments as well.
  • The mission from the gameplay demo will be a bit different in the final version. For example, they mention you save a lot more people in the actual game, and there are actually failure states, but for the purposes of the demo, they changed things up a bit.
  • They note that Spider-Man is 23 in the game, and has been Spider-Man for eight years, so he's pretty accomplished, though as you might have noticed in the trailer, far from 100% confident in himself.
  • They confirm that Miles Morales was the guy at the end of the trailer. They won't say if he's playable, but they mentioned he's there because they want to show this is a different kind of Spider-Man story.
  • They also note that Miles' role is much bigger than a cameo.
  • Marvel noted that they want their games to help develop their less well known characters as well, and Insomniac mentioned that Miles' inclusion was also part of this initiative. Marvel had previously noted that they view diversity in gaming as extremely important, so there's that factor as well.
  • There will also be villains beyond Mr. Negative and Kingpin.
  • They talk a bit more about the gadgets and how you can use things like tripwires on two people instead of just traditionally. They're trying to have a lot of combat options.
  • In case it wasn't obvious, this is not tied to any existing Spider-Man story.
  • For the most neurotic fans, Insomniac assures that the white Spider-Man symbol is meaningful and has a purpose that's explained in game.
  • They also note that the web swinging isn't normally QTE based, but that they use QTEs for cinematic moments.

This game looks so good. Insomniac seems like the perfect studio to bring Spiderman back to video-game life. I read a really good article about how for web-swinging through the City Spiderman's webs will stick to buildings instead of like in past games where they stuck to the invisible ceiling. They also say this is point in his career where Parker has been Spiderman for something like 8 years and is at the top of his game which should make for some crazy use of his powers. But the biggest thing that I loved was how Insomniac made Spiderman seem so heroic during that scene with the crane coming down. At first the E3 video demo had me saying this is like an Arkham game with a Spiderman skin but by the end I was totally sold.

Looks amazing. Single player only though? Come on Sony, what are you doing. Every game should have multiplayer. You've ruined gaming beyond repair.

Looks great. Haven't played a Spider-Game since the one for the Amazing Spider-Man 1 movie I think.

Not being able to kill people might be a deal breaker for me. I just love killing people in games so much.

Could be the next Arkham type reboot. Looks great.

I like that it's brighter and that Spider-Man doesn't wear a cape. I often find the combat in Arkham to feel good but it's hard to make out what batman is doing sometimes because he blends in with the backgrounds and his cape sometimes gets in the way.

I agree, and I like the lighter emotional tone, too. Not that Batman doesn't crack a joke now and then, but I always liked Spider-Man because he had a sense of humor. It's not always hilarious, but it's nice to have a superhero who makes jokes. The only people making jokes in Batman are the villains. Batman himself is always pretty serious and sober: the Dark Knight. At least he has been lately -- many years ago, of course, he had that silly TV series. He was serious there, too, but his seriousness was part of the sillyness.

Anyhow, I like Spider-Man's lighter tone. You get a little sense of that in the clip.

I was reading GAF with people moaning about QTE's, animations, we swinging and I am just like are people high or something? This game along with God Of War looks absolutely incredible. The animations, the combat, the sound design, the visuals, the voice acting etc all looks top notch.

Batman has always been my favorite comic book character but Spider-Man was close behind. QTEs don't bother me if done right, and the combat, while maybe similiar to Arkham, should be a lot more free flowing and crazy depending on what you can do with webs and swinging.

Game looks great.

nice to hear QTEs are not everywhere all the time. Nice to hear there is. more to the demo sgment too.

I don't mind it being single player but I do wonder if there will be MP things like leaderboards for certain activities...also curious if there might be other modes outside the open world...like a hoarde mode were you can hone your bad ass asskicking skills.

Also who is Miles and why should I care about his inclusion?

Interesting... I thought Miles was from the Ultimate universe. I haven't read the comics in a couple years though back around issue 700.

Listened to fascinating interview with Ted Price on Kotaku and it came about because Marvel went to Sony to make a top caliber Marvel game on the same level as Sony's first party's I.P's (which we already knew) but he said Marvel gave them a choice of which characters/character they wanted to make a game from and they chose Spider-man due to the character and big fans at Insomniac. Which tells me Marvel could easily approach Sony again for another exclusive should they feel one of Sony's studios is the right fit for a particular character. Could also apply to a Microsoft studio too.

Its Disney that's putting the brakes on other Marvel video games. When Disney acquired Marvel one of their first moves was to shutdown all studios making Marvel games just like they did when they shutdown Lucas Arts studios after acquiring Star Wars. Sony owns the Spiderman IP for live action films and games so they don't have to pay Disney anything. Activision had a deal to make Marvel games but that has since expired. EA with its deep pockets was able to secure a deal for Star Wars games but with Disney asking for such high licensing fees I wouldn't count on many Marvel games any time soon.

The final counts were incredibly close: Marvel's Spider-Man narrowly edged out Super Mario Odyssey for the People's Choice Award. Not much further down the list, EA's Anthem picked up a cool third place while God of War rounded out the game's with the most votes, finishing off with fourth place overall.

Sony don't own the Spider-man I.P for games. Marvel approached them and gave them the license but they wanted a first party quality title in return. So Sony approached Insomniac to work with Marvel.

They should give MS a Juggernaut license. The game could have a fully destructible city as part of the campaign.

You're correct, my bad. Sony only owns the rights to make Spiderman films but Marvel/Disney controls all other platforms/TV/merchandising.

At first I wondered why Sucker Punch wasn't tasked with this project because they are a internal studio and very talented with stylish traversal style of games until someone mentioned they are hard at work on a as yet announced project. I think it shows very good thinking on Sony's part to go with Insomniac. If you played Sunset Overdrive you'll know very quickly they too are great at making a game of this type where the character is zipping around without touching the ground. I just wish this was coming out sooner, sucks we have to wait until next year.

I knew Insomniac was good but not this good. The gameplay looks Epic.

I get that it's a video game and you wanna kill people but Spiderman is not known for killing. It would be stupid and out if character.

It'll probably be like Batman, who is known for not killing people, too. Some of his moves would generally kill a person in real life, but the characters in the game just get knocked out.

For instance, if in real life you try swinging a gigantic metal beam at people's heads like this --

the results will be messy and fatal. But in Spider-Man, they will just get knocked out.

Yeah I don't think that spinning kick to the head followed by slamming the guys head on the ground using super strength is really good for his health either lol.
