I'm thinking of re-joining the master race this fall. I actually bought 3 games on the Steam sale that I can't run right now, so I'm pretty much committed. I figure I'll wait until fall when it cools down a bit.

I think I've got my system all spec'd out, but what's an affordable 27-30 inch gaming monitor that won't crush my wallet?

Resolution?

Refresh rate?

Refresh rate?

The one I'm looking at is 2560 x 1440 at 144 Hz. It is only 27" so I'm thinking that's ok. I'm not really sure on refresh rate. I think my old monitor now is like 60 or something? I doubt my eyes will even notice, and it isn't like I'm going to be playing MP shooters competitively or anything. I'll probably just mess around with some SP games. I do most of my MP gaming on console now. At my age, my mouse+kb skills have declined noticeably :(

I might go a little bigger if I find something on sale between now and fall. Most of the games I will play will be strategy. I already bought Civ 6 and Xcom 2 on sale. Basically more the kind of games you can't get on console (I know X2 is on console).

Vid card is either a GTX 1060 or 1070 probably, depending on how prices go.

It isn't about what you see it's about how it feels, and there is a gigantic difference in responsiveness from 60hz to 100+

I'll definitely get something with a better refresh rate. The monitor I have now still only has VGA and DVI :) I've been out of PC gaming for too long.

I noticed that the other day. It's crazy and there is no way I would build a new PC right now with those pricrs. Supposedly it has to do with something called mining or something?

I am clueless when it comes to these cryptocurrencies and stuff.

Anyone care to explain?

I might have to get a 4gig vram card from Nvidia for now just to have something. I was behind on my built a while back but now almost everything went down on price.

I want to get a PC to maybe play a game here and there but mainly to create videos for us.

Well boys and girls I will be getting a new cheap cool keyboard and mouse. With the flat matt wide for k&B.

Here it is
This is pretty cool for the price I paid for.

Keyboard 4 led colors
Mouse led red
Wide Mat

So, I'm going to be rejoining the master race soon I guess. I'm a long time PC gamer but haven't updated my rig in forever so I kind of fell away.

I went with a Dell Alienware Aurora (I know build it yourself... done it before, would rather have someone else do it and guarantee it).

I7-7700 processor 4.2ghz
GTX 1080 with 8GB (the TI was too much of a jump)
3 year warranty (I'm too old to be diving into PC guts anymore)

Got a Dell 27" monitor already too (much cheaper off Amazon).

Supposed to be here Tuesday but it is coming from Texas and you know they might have a hurricane hit there... more than once.

The funny thing is the two games I want to play are Civ 6 and Xcom 2. Already bought them cheap off a Steam sale. Thinking about going back to PC for Call of Duty too. We'll see.

Anyway, can someone send me a key to the master race private club? :)

Civ series is awesome.

If your monitor is only 1080p dont forget to look at how to supersample.

Yeah I can't wait. I'm a huge Firaxis fan. Xcom 2 just isn't the same on console either.

My monitor is like 2560x1440 or something, so not 4k but kind of in the middle. Going true 4k meant going bigger and added a ton of cost. This seems like a good balance. Eventually I can always hook up to my TV, but I do a lot of actual work on my PC.

The problem is that these cards are now made for mining than gaming.

Mining will be top because they buy cards in bulks. This can hurt PC gaming for a while.

No idea what that is. I was watching prices all summer and they stayed pretty much the same. I remember back in the day you'd spend $300+ on a card that was completely out of date in 18 months. As long as this keeps me solid for 3 years or so I'm happy. I'll mostly play games like Civ anyway.

What website you were looking at. Everywhere have doubled in price or more!

I went lazy and went Dell/Alienware so maybe the prices are padded enough already. I've been watching all summer and basically the cost in May was the same as now. Maybe a tiny bit lower. Maybe the price of everything else just went down to compensate.

Anyway got my rig last night. Of course all I'm doing is firing up Steam and waiting...

Yeah your rig is fairly beefy. Congrats. May your framerates be high and your resolutions be crisp. :txbcool:

Thanks! I only had 10 minutes to try Doom this morning before work and wow... I have no idea what the fps was but it was nice. Even at 1440p or whatever my monitor runs native.

I know everyone says build your own, but Alienware is nice. I take it out of the box and plug it in and I'm done. Not even much bloatware on there which surprised me.

Of course I can't aim for sh* with mouse and keyboard anymore. Almost ran out of ammo in the opening level. Too many years with "close enough" console aiming. You wouldn't know that I played the original Doom off a 5 1/4" disk back in the day.

Got to readjust to that precise aim. Going from mouse kb to console after a while is like trying to swim in a sea of molasses.

Yeah. I'll get back in the swing of things, at least for single player. May not jump on multiplayer for a long time. Right before my PC arrived, Steam had a great sale on Arma 3. Can't wait to try that out.

I've been using trackball mice at work for about 15 years. I still remember I first was given one that looked like a pool cue ball, like I was going to be playing old school missile commander or some such with the damn thing.

Yep, now I just have to convince my boss to buy another one of these for $100. I love them for basically anything that isn't fast paced gaming.

Looks good. Now is the 1060 (mobile?) that good of a deal?
