Zelda and Horizon, battling for #1. Sounds about right.

I'm sure Zelda will get it, though.

I think most interesting is there are at least 10 games listed that have a vote cast for them. 10 games good enough that someone considered them the best game of the year. How anyone can say 2017 was a bad year for gaming seems to be a tough stance for most to agree with. I could list a few titles not listed that I think were AAA fun experiences too but not enough scope to be considered for the GotY.

Yeah, you've got to recognize at least 4* as being great games. That's a good year.

*I'd say 6.

It's been an amazing year, and gen even for games. One of the last GAF threads i read before Evilore went all Harvey Winestein on us was a thread about the state of gaming. Most people seemed to think we're in another golden age of gaming. I'd have to agree. Other than the loot box nonsense it's been a good few years.

Well, I think 2017 has been great, but other years this gen have been only average.

Wow where is Persona 5? It got 93 metacritic score and it was one of the best games I've ever played this year. I literally spent 100 plus hours on it and still remains the top 10 active games at Gamefaqs.

Nier would be higher than 2nd place in this poll if more of you played it.

Forza, Halo Wars, and Cuphead are all good games, though. Not to mention pretty much every other 3rd party game. Hate to break it to you, but 3rd Party games are games too....

The statement that the console "has no games" is so asinine it could only come from a.. .wait for it... Fanboy.

Forza 7 isn't good, though.

In ten years, we're all going to look back on this thread with great shame. 2017, the year of PUBG, and we gave our most sacred award to Horizon Zero Dawn? I mean, at least make it look like we're not just monkeys touching random spots on a computer screen and vote for Mario or Zelda!?

If we're going by scores the Nintendo games deserve it, if votes are weighted by sales, PUBGs got it. IDK why persona is there. It came out in 2016.

** Edit ignore, thought this was the VGA 2017 topic.

They're coming with games. Some games might not be to everyone's liking but they are coming. Geez what a ridiculous argument.

We had Halo Wars 2 and Voodoo Vince 8 months straight. followed by cuphead and another Forza. The X1 line up is something I would exoect at launch not a console 4 years in. Sorry I don't reward lazy comoany's...

3 gg's in whole year is laughable. Third party title are games too but they can also be had on Ps4. Not my fault the X1 line up is mediocre.

So you'll listen next time?

The point stands that the term "nothing to play" does not apply. There is plenty to play. Being able to play it on another system too is irrelevant. It's a slow year for first party. Doesn't matter to me because I have more options than I can responsibly afford... Only Fanboys care about this.

I personally don't have much interest in Sony's first party offerings aside from a few games, and I haven't felt a real desire to get back to them. That's ok, because it's personal preference. I'm glad I have my PS4 for when the ones I do care about come around. That doesn't change the fact that I also want my Halos, Cupheads, Forzas, Gears' and Oris.

You are getting on people for not agreeing with your personal assessment of what others value.

Poll only has 10 options, so Wolf had to leave some games off. Persona 5 is a very nichey game, very Japanese.

I played it for 40 hrs or so, mostly enjoyed it, but stopped because it felt too repetitive and padded out for me. There was too much constant talking and texting each other. I noticed a lot of people (after the initial enthusiasm) had complaints about repetitive gameplay loops and overly difficult/tedious sections. Not saying it's a bad game, just saying that even among PS gamers, there was mixed reaction.

Why don't we meet back here in 10 years and see if you're right. See if we're all deeply ashamed of ourselves for voting for the game we liked the best this year, rather than voting for the game with the biggest crowds.

also lol at "our most sacred award."

Oh Aaandyyy!!

How is Persona 5 ($59.00) niche when it surpassed 1.8 million in sales back in July? I mean are we sure Hellblade ($39.00 - Gothic game about mental illness), Cuphead ($19.00 - 1940's artstyle where you play as cups and die every 15 seconds), and Nier ($60.00 - The upskirt AI bullet hell action RPG) are over 2 million sold at this point?

Also, I think your perception of gamer response is a little biased against Persona 5 as well. Not only did it earn a 93 critically at OpenCritic and Metacritic, but the gamer score at both sites was also higher than your beloved Horizon Zero Dawn. In fact, the gamer score on both sites score it higher than pretty much all AAA games this year. So if the response was "mixed" amongst PS gamers, you're using the term pretty loosely are you not?

Lastly, I'm assuming most of us at the Union are going to battle with depression, guilt, and addiction to controlled substanses once this poll finalizes. We're definitely not going to be a dependable group after this.

*starts chant*

PUBG and P5 matter! PUBG and P5 matter!

*waits for someone to come up with catchier chant*

1. Criticc scores. LOLZ!

2. The gamer scores on those sites are not exactly reliable. People constantly score games they haven't played or finished.

As for niche, price is irrelevant. As for sales, 2 million is very low relative to the 65 million install base..If you want to argue it not being niche thdn you need to establish a number to qualify games as such.

1. Look at the relation between critic scores and Game of the Year winners from the past 25 years. There seems to be a rather strong coorelation.

2. Actually I find them to be fairly reliable. Arguably more reliable than critic scores.

3. Please go re read my original post. Andy said a $60 dollar game that sold 2 million copies was too niche to include yet the thread has 2 other games that sell for reduced prices that most likely haven't hit 2 million units at this point. That doesn't make much sense.

Furthermore, I do not appreciate the crude, console warriory tone you've taken with your post. Let's try to actually discuss things here.

Persona 5 is one the top 10 games of the year but it probably wouldn't have got any votes on here

What the f*** was console warrory about it?

Eh, take it up with Wolf. He made the choices. I would've left Persona 5 off, too.

Did P5 get nominated at the Game Awards? I don't remember seeing it. Maybe one category, art design or something like that.

I think the problem some of us are having (me) is that there's our personal game of the year and there's GAME OF THE YEAR.

I just think more interesting discussion comes from the latter rather than the former

But you're insisting your choice is the "right" one. That's annoying.

People don't agree with me and i don't like it

Surely only the personal GOTY really matterss to us. The other one is more for devs.

Well Persona isn't necessarily any more worthy of "GAME OF THE YEAR" and PUBG isn't even a finished game yet

But you're insisting your choice is the "right" one. That's annoying.

I don't know how else to build a case though. When you watch courtroom dramas, the defense doesn't say "In my opinion my client didn't do it, but you're free to believe what you want." They say "My client didn't do it and here's why..." Same for the prosecution.

Believe it or not, I actually want someone here to say "You're wrong for these reasons...". Not "Yeah well, that's just, like, your opinion man."

Also, this is a Game of the Year thread! It's not supposed to be fun. It's supposed to be a slug fest where friendships are tested, and in some cases completely ruined.
