Official Thread The Switch Thread

After a bit over a week of using the switch, here is my haul (ok my sons) and my impressions:

Nintendo Switch
2 Pro Controllers
Extra Joycons/grip
Joycon charging dock (x4)
Hard Case
Carry Case
Car Charger/Extra USB-C cable
Wheels for Joycons
Screen Protector
USB 3.0 Network adapter (play wired or go home)
Games: Zelda, MK8D, Splatoon 2, Lego City Undercover, Mario+Rabbids, Arms, Puyo Puyo Tetris (Mario Odyssey coming for Christmas)
  • Love the versatility....handheld to home console. We had a Wii U so was hilarious and infuriating every time my son would go to play and he'd grab the whole console out of the dock (i.e. like the Wii U tablet). I do have to say that I'm loathe to take it out of the house though...just seems flimsier than a true handheld and thus a hard case/good carry case is a must.
  • Like that they got rid of the Network ID on the switch and just have accounts now.
  • I'm a fan of the Joycons and their versatility....use in handheld mode, use individually, use in grip, use in wheels, etc. but I hate the button size (hurts to push them in games like MK8 and not fond of them on the grip for longer play sessions. Moved to the pro controller for the most part except when in handheld mode.
  • Games: Zelda is really good but really not seeing GOTY here...I'm only around 6 hours in....maybe just me but Witcher 3 is more my speed. MK8D I'm really digging....the game just feels better than it did on the Wii U and with all of the courses/dlc unlocked, it's much more satisfying. I think we've already had more fun with MK8D on the Switch that we did on the few years we had it on the Wii U. Arms - lacks depth but overall a pretty damn fun fighting game...prob a $30/$40 title. I do find the motion controls to be a bit imprecise though. Splatoon 2 feels like Splatoon 1.5 without the local MP....really need split-screen for this game moving forward as it's a ton of fun to play otherwise.
  • Haven't played online yet but not really digging what I'm hearing regarding voice chat on phone app, etc. I will likely fork over the $20/yr for my son to play online and to get a free game every month when this hits. I may as well if there is a good compelling game or 2 to play online.
  • Not a fan of the Nintendo dock. I'd rather have a dock where I could keep a hard case on (and only take off if we really need that set of joycons.) Looking at some 3rd party docks.
  • Accessory prices....I know that I and most others complain about this a lot but damn man. Some of it was my own fault as I really wanted to get us to the place where we were with the Wii U (i.e. 4-5 controllers, 5-10 games) but also bought quite a few accessories for the handheld side. The good news is that we should only really need games from here on out.
There's some other good stuff/negatives but overall, I'm pretty satisfied that this is an upgrade to the Wii U and a more versatile one at that. Great family/secondary home console that is also portable.

And this is when I don't like DF

No one would have expected it to look like the PS4 version but they still spend a lot of time going on about how it's missing stuff.

Still going to be great to play.

Been playing BOTW for the last couple days. It's amazing, and takes me back to the feeling I got playing Ocarina of Time.

But I did try it in portable mode earlier and man I don't think I can play it that way at all. The right joycons thumbstick is extremely awkward and uncomfortable to me. My hand started cramping after 15 minutes.

That happened to me as well. I have massive hands and they actually ached the first few days I played Zelda in handheld but my hands adapted after that. I mean, that's no excuse - you shouldn't have to suffer at all, but if you are set on handheld, your hands might adjust like mine.

Cool. I actually ordered one of these. People say they are good. We will see, I've never backed anything on Kickstarter before.

WTF is the Apple Watch doing in there?

That and didn't realize the iPhone crushes Samsung that badly in sales. I guess the people hate American products mantra isn't entirely accurate. Or maybe that just applies to video games. Switch and PS4 only sell because they're from Japan, right guys?

Dono if this has been brought up. A few times I’ve docked my switched and instead of a crisp and clear image on my tv I’d get this wickedly low resolution that when ever the stamina dial would appear it’d look like it was made from legos and there’d be major pop up in the environment.

Anyways, the soloution I foundby is to leave it docked and merely power it down and then back up with the power button on the switch unit/monitor. I’ve seen people recommend unplugging it for for five minutes but I’m lazy to do that extra step. Hope that helps if anyone else gets that hiccup.

Cheers,
Kid

Nah the world loves American and South Korean products, who’s innards are American but are made by the Chinese as a whole. I blame those kooky Italians ;)

lemme edit in some context...

Haven't touched my Switch in a couple months.
It's kind of just a Mario/Zelda machine for me and I always suspected it would be.
What it does though it does great.

Question can i use switch right out of the box and play Zelda I don't have internet yet but I can take it to Walmart to update if I have to

You say that but most electrical devices need updates right out of the box sadly
An update will be available when he goes online for the first time, but there's nothing to stop him from playing Zelda on cart for the rest of his life having never updated.
But yeah I get what you're saying.

I figure some of you guys don't read the Sales thread, so I'll cross post here. Very good news for the Switch in Nintendo's fiscal year end report:

Switch 14.86 million LTD. Switch has not even been out a year, and it has already beaten Wii U's lifetime sales total of 13.56 million.

Switch also has 8 million-seller exclusives, two of which are third party games:

Super Mario Odyssey - 9.07 million units
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 7.33 million units
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 6.7 million units
Splatoon 2 - 4.91 million units
1-2-Switch - 1.88 million units
ARMS - 1.61 million units
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - 1.06 million units

I was surprised at Mario's 9 million and impressed by Mario Kart and Zelda's numbers. Even Xenoblade 2 did well.
