Think this is US only but if not might give a clue of how many Xbox ones have been sold

"Combined sales of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One continue on a record-setting pace," Piscatella said. "Over the first 50 months in market for each console, the combined hardware installed base of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One now exceeds that of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by 18 percent, and that of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox by 4 percent."

Could games like mario and BoTW have had higher sales numbers, in the UK or else where, if there wasn’t the initial limited (shortage) Switch availability?

No such things as switch shortages here in the UK. While the console is doing much better than the Wii U it's never been a sell out in stores.

Yeah by all accounts (so 0 media attention saying other wise) all 3 managed to have more than enough stock WW

Didn't the PS4 had supply issues in the month of December?

Like Wolf, I didn't hear anything about that. I'm pretty sure that PS4's decline in December was almost completely related to pricing.

It could temporarily reduce the sales numbers during the months that the Switch was supply-constrained, but it wouldn't affect the overall 2017 numbers. People would just buy the Switch and the games later than they would have otherwise.

Bad news for console warriors. Mat Piscatella (NPD): "All 3 consoles did exceptionally well. In my mind, looking at the data, it's really a three way tie for 'winning' Q4. The gaps in both Units and Spending between the three are quite small. No one ran away with the quarter. Each platform has found its own audience."

In other news... Few people here care about Xenoblade 2, but it did very well in its debut (280K physical only), and it's on track for 1 million WW, which is just fine for a game like this. It's likely to be the best-selling game in the series.

Yep 0 reason to try and downplay sales or make excuses. Gaming had a great Christmas.

Could have but I wouldn't call that reliable.

But then I believe it was heavily bundled as well?

It sold over 2.6 million in it's first two weeks, I have no reason to believe it hasn't passed 4 million by now. As far as bundles there was one with a 1TB PS4 here in the states for a short time but I'm not sure how much they charged for that. The game has been on sale quite often over the last few months and I think the MSRP has been $39.99 for a little while now, the complete edition is around $50.00.

I read that Forza Horizon 3 is close to 5 million too. Though now I can't find it on gaf or reset.

I disagree. Welfare is a long-time, respected member of the sales squad over there -- one of the senior guys, with his hands in the data in a way few others have. I consider him very trustworthy. Benji is also a verified insider and has access to NPD data. Also very trustworthy and plugged in. Neither show any bias. It's not as good as direct word from Guerilla, of course, but it's a reliable estimate from credible sources.

In part, I put it up because some other people here just throw around numbers with no attribution/source. At least I'm telling you where the estimate is coming from. I consider it reliable, because I've followed those guys for years, and they know their stuff.

360 vs. Xbox One. NPD (US) data only.

Interesting to see how dramatically the 360 shot up in the 5th year. What was that related to, does anyone remember? [edit: It was Kinect.]

Xbox One dipped this year but ended strong. It should be interesting to see how much of that momentum carries forward into 2018.

Hardware units sold in 2017 (NPD):

PS4: 5.46 million
Switch: 4.88 million
XB1: 4.28 million

https://www.resetera.com/posts/3505065/

The PS4 to Xbox ratio is roughly 1.3 to 1.

I think Switch's success is the main surprise this year, in terms of hardware. People really underestimated it. I guess that's not too surprising, given the Wii U's performance.

Here is the UKIE/GfK Top Ten for the week ending January 20th:

Last Week This Week Title
2 1 Call of Duty: WII
3 2 FIFA 18
1 3 Grand Theft Auto V
5 4 Mario Kart 8 Delux
8 5 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
6 6 PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
4 7 Assassin's Creed Origins
10 8 Super Mario Odyssey
7 9 Star Wars Battlefront II
New Entry 10 Digimon: Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker's Memory

It would include digital. Harker has access to NPD data, so he's talking US sales/revenue, with digital included.
That's some weird math where units down 70% and rev only down 40%. You'd think the increase or decrease would go together more closely.

Maybe has to do with units getting bundled with consoles where it may count as 1 unit sold, but at $0.
