PS5 not until 2021 (or maybe not)

With us having mid gen consoles for the first time ever, this doesn't surprise me at all.

I'm fine with it, but I expect 2019 honestly. Multiplatform dominance for Xbox for 3 more years isn't a bad thing for them either. That's a long time with a ton of huge games.

It makes sense financially. HW costs a ton to develop and manufacture, the install base is huge, and the big titles are selling very well. So why bother anytime soon?

I mean who REALLY believed it was coming next year or even 2020 for that matter?

The technology jump above the One X just isn't big enough yet. I've said this all along.

Lots of people thought it was coming in 2020, including me. As far as I could tell, it was the most common estimate.

This puts that back at least a year (potentially longer). I can see the advantage. It'll be easier to hit the $399 mark. And I guess there's no real rush.

It does make me more motivated to get an X, though. Three and a half years is a long time to have the "inferior" hardware.

Yeah right. PS5 is coming in 2020. I'll bet my reputation on it. No lose situation there! Kinda like Sony.

Yep,games on Pro and X will continue to look better and better in 2019,they still havent maxed out the power of these consoles.

WSJ may have got this wrong. There may be some misunderstanding involved. I've put a maybe in the title. Will investigate more.

I posted about it on Resetera. Here are some of the replies I got:

Well, looks like a clear misinterpretation to me, because Sony didn't say that at all.

This seems to be the interpretation of the author. The original quote by Kodera is very vague:

Here is another article from Bloomberg, apparently from the same event, where things read quite differently:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...tation-chief-hints-at-portable-gaming-revival
QUOTE="Gemüsepizza, post: 8263176, member: 9274"]

Unfortunately, other news outlets have picked the WSJ story up and are reporting this as fact now.

Sounds like they're just taking the 3 year thing and running with it without understanding how console business works.

So at the very least, the WSJ statement is not at all as clear as it seemed initially. Kodera's remarks are open to interpretation. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the WSJ misinterpreted things.

People at Resetera are all over the map on when the PS5 is coming, so obviously the article is not as definitive as it sounds -- or else this would be decided, not an issue for debate.

My understanding, and the understanding of some others in the Resetera thread, is that when Kodera mentioned 3 years, he was talking about the minimum timeframe that PS4 will be supported. He wasn't saying anything specific about when the PS5 would release. Obviously, there could be overlap between the two, as there has been for every PS console transition.

So my sense is the WSJ misinterpreted Kodera's remarks, and it's still an open question when the PS5 will release. 2020 and 2021 seem the most likely candidates.

You know "people at Resetera" are you, and I and other fellow gamers. Other than an occasional developer that posts there, or a member that has an NPD subscription or contact, these are the exact same people that you and I are. So their comments mean no more or no less than our comments we all have here.

I was thinking 2020, but all the late 2019 rumors were certainly something to think about.

I have to say I’m glad it is coming later. I’d like the PS5 to feel like a true generational jump.

Do you value the opinions of everyone here exactly the same?

Like I said before dev kits haven't gone out. 2019 was a stretch. I am still hearing late 2020 as a possibility.

Do you value the opinions of everyone here exactly the same?
Nope.

Ask me this question though:

"Do you value the opinions at Resetera exactly the same as you do here?"
Yup.

Actually, I value the opinions here more because I know everyone here. UnionVGF feels like a family, and there is a circle of trust. Andy, Wolf, and Plainview, Living, Showers and company run a great ship.

Left out illiniguy cuz he is a turd and the Bears still suck.

I love being talked to as if I have the IQ of a turnip. :really:

Notice that all we had here in the thread was people reacting to the headline. There was no discussion of what Kodera had actually said, or whether it was consistent with what WSJ was reporting. There was no mention of the fact that other sites were reporting it very differently. There was no mention of the contradictions between what Kodera had actually said and what WSJ had reported.

I routinely go to Resetera for wider perspective on issues that get discussed here. We've got a small forum with a predominantly Xbox-oriented membership. People aren't carefully attending to what Sony CEOs say or what is being reported about their statements. I'm a Sony guy and am reasonably well informed, but even I am not doing that. I find it helpful to go to Reset threads where these things are being discussed at length, because the people there tend to be more plugged in and aware of the full picture than I am, than we are here.

Obviously, I'm not claiming these people are authorities. But I think adding some additional perspectives from people who've been attending to the issue more closely than most people here have (including me) is useful. I don't want the headline to be taken at face value, if it might represent a misunderstanding or misreading of what Kodera actually said.

Other perspectives is a good thing. I just had the impression that you found their opinions to be of a greater or higher value, than say ours at VGF. And maybe you do, which is cool. I personally find them on equal ground.

For me, if the PS5 comes out in 2019, 2020, or 2021, I will buy it in any of those years.

Well, I wouldn't make any global statements, but in some cases like this, there are people at Reset who are just simply more informed than people here about the particular issue. That's not a slight against Union, and I include myself in that statement. It's just a reflection of the different sizes of the forums. On a huge forum, you're going to have some people willing to attend carefully to stories like this and discuss them at length. Over here, you don't get that, especially with Sony-related stuff (unless it's bad news, then it's all hands on deck, lol). I don't have the time to keep up with the minutae myself, so I find Reset a convenient place to get more information or at least other perspectives.
