Mini-Review/Backlog Destruction Thread

I’m years late to the party but I’m finally playing Bioshock thanks to Game Pass. A lot of last gen classics came out when I was taking a long break from gaming. My goal now is to experience those games on the top 100 that I still haven’t played.

After this, think I’ll add Portal to my classics backlog.

Too many open world games. Last one I finished was Ghost Recon Wildlands which was about two weeks ago.

Completed Kingdom hearts 1.5. For an early PS2 it holds up surprising well, combat is fun, the story is great and engaging and the worlds are full of charm. It is quite a meaty game and challenging in parts but the game design is obtuse and will perplex you in where to go. If you are jumping into Kingdom Hearts 3 all I will say is don't do it, the story is not about Disney characters and is far more frigging complex. The story continuing into 2 is already confusing me and I guess I am paying the price for not playing rechain memories I think. The combat, visuals and animation is much improved in the second game and the worlds are more open. I am really stoked for Kingdom Hearts 3 now.

Also started playing inFamous First Light and so far it is a highly polished, enjoyable and tight experience. Fetch is fantastic to control and I really like the punch to the combat. The story so far is alright and nothing special but Fetch is an interesting character.I bought it for £4 and think it is easily worth £10-£15.

Completed Kingdom Hearts 2 and the story is complete clusterf***. I feel sorry for people if they jump into KH3 expecting it to be a Disney game lol. Also I don't know how Xbox gamers will understand the story without playing the first two games. KH2 an an improvement in visuals and score but the combat felt better in the first one because you can dodge/roll. In typical japanese style the final level contained like 6 individual bosses with the final boss being crazy. Got to hand to the Japanese, they know how to do bats*** crazy boss battles.

I gave up on Extinction. Got burned by the hype for that game. Going back to my deep JRPG backlog on PS4. Going to try to make some progress on FFXV, Grand Kingdom and Star Ocean.

Ok been a while since I updated this. I think I may have a backlog problem. I stopped on FFXV, Grand Kingdom and Star Ocean for the near future. I will eventually get back to them.

I bought and finished Vampyr. Easily a 7/10 but there are alot of good ideas in there that could make the sequel worthwhile.

Just bought Ni No Kuni 2 for the pc, we'll see how far I get until I get distracted. I'm playing Dragon's Crown Pro on the PS4 Pro with a buddy.

I played and beat AC: Origins on the pc. Best Assassins Creed I've ever played.

I'm working through some of the XB1 exclusive games that were critically panned like Super Luck Tale and State of Decay 2 and I'm finding that they are not nearly as bad as they were made out to be.

Dang, been a while since I posted. Man my backlog never seems to shrink, no matter how many games I clear out.

Doom: awesome, awesome game. Glad I waited for the X enhancement to play it.

Wolfie: TNC: another awesome FPS

GoW: Judgement, I guess I had a Gears itch that needed some scratching. Thoroughly enjoyable even today.

FC5: Good game, great graphics. I wish the co-op had a bit more freedom in it. Both endings hummed the dogs balls. Really burnt out on the "FC formula" now, definitely won't be buying 6 day one.

Tomb Raider Definitive: Really had a blast with it. Forgot how much I liked the earlier games in the series. Enjoyed it so much I'm working through "Rise of the Tomb Raider" currently.

LiS: Before the Storm: Finally finished the bonus episode. That and the 3rd episode were thoroughly "meh", the bonus episode especially. The first two episodes were so good too 🙁

Not really backlog I guess since I bought it at release, but Vampyr I was playing but gave up about half way through. Just started Wolfenstein 2 though which I've had for a while. Having a blast with it.

Have you play the original. It is much better. The bonus chapter is more a fan servce, because people want to see Max & Chloe together in the game again.

Finished Final Fantasy 15 (PS4 Pro). Several things:

1. Graphically, its a tour de force even on consoles. Not on par with PC version but still very good.
2. Story is All Over The Place. Far too much deus ex Machina.
3. Motivation for characters and overall pacing is piss poor. Makes FF13 look like literary gold.
4. Again with pacing, after chapter 8 the game falls apart.
5. The devs really try to play up the bromance between the 4 characters. Sometimes its really feels genuine other times not so much.
6. Gameplay was different. Felt more like a Tales or Star Ocean game. Was still pretty fun.
7. Overall, game felt incomplete or unfinished.

I played the Day-One vanilla version of the game, Not the Royal version or Windows version, and for the life of me as is I can't fathom how any professional reviewer could give this game anything less than a 6/10 and nothing more than 7/10.

Edit: After having some time to mull it over, the Day 1 edition is still at best a 7 to 8/10. A 6 might be a bit harsh. But it still felt imcomplete. From what I'm hearing about the PC and Royal edition, those are the version we should have gotten from the jump.

I bought Broken Age from Stream summer sales. at 4,99€, it is a no brainer.

Finished State of Decay 2. Did the Sherrif's legacy. Got kinda tough with my crew trying to finish that last mission at night but it all worked out. Only exiled 1 person and never lost anyone to Blood plague or death. I think I made it 25 days or so. Overall this was a much better game and experience than what I was lead to belive from critics. I imagine that's why it sold so well.

With This and FF15 done, I think I might need a pallet cleanser. No more grim dark and sadness. Might jump into Ni No Kuni 2 but I kinda feel rpg-ed out right now.

I downloaded & play a bit of Awesome adventure of captain Spirit. The presentation is awesome &/ the visual is a bit more polish then their last title "Life is strange"

The game feels more like an interactive movie than game. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy it, but I think more adventure games are moving into this interactive experience than traditional puzzle solving these days.

After completing Gears 2 and 3 and Bioshock, now continuing on more recent classics. Finished God of War, almost completed Ori, halfway through Bloodbourne, only fraction of the way through Dark Souls Remastered and just started Nier.

God of War will probably finish as a top 5 game this gen. Once I tried to understand the upgrades and started using the special moves, gameplay was almost as solid as the visuals. Story was solid. Not earth shattering or as memorable but solid.

Ori has been pretty amazing. Never got that far when I played it upon first release. It stuck this time. Also one of the top games this gen.

Ori is one I keep forgetting to start...

Beat Wolfenstein 2 last night. Great game and no better time than now to have played it. I still have some collectibles to find, a few commanders to kill, and the DLC, but I'll come back to that after playing another game first. Can't wait for the new expansion with coop. On to Witcher 2 next.

There's a new expansion with co-op coming?

Finally beat Ori. Top side scrolling game I’ve played since the 16 bit era. Excellent overall level design. It’s interesting how the gameplay changes dramatically depending on what abilities you have and which environment you’re in. Ori 2 is now officially one of my most anticipated games of 2019. First time I played Ori I only gave it a couple hours and it didn’t click. I suggest every gamer give it a chance to click.

Now on to Nier and think it’s a good time to start State of Decay 2.

I got "Video is not avilable".
You're in Germany right? Any other WW2/Nazi stuff get blocked there? Either way seems silly for a video game but I know there and Australia ban stuff.

Edit: it doesn't show much anyways. Just a CGI/cutscene showing the game in the 80s and you play as one of his twin daughters to continue fighting the Nazis. I read elsewhere that Blaskowitz has gone missing and they are searching for him.

Yes. I am in Germany. It might be due to the 'Swastika' signs.

Shadow Complex Remastered - Ori gave me the Metroidvania itch...but unfortunately set the bar in a tough spot. I’m finding SC a bit clunky so far. I’ll keep giving it a chance because maybe additional abilities will make the game better but not overly impressed off the jump.

Nier Automata - After getting past the first boss, game got super easy. Afraid to turn up difficulty due to some cheap 1 hit deaths on the first boss. If difficulty doesn’t balance out later, can’t see myself putting in the 20+ hours to keep replaying it to see the entire story.

Bloodbourne - Keep chipping away. I take breaks because it’s a bit daunting. I can see this jumping to my top 3 game of this gen if the last portions of the game are consistent in quality.

I'm a bit all over the place.

Earthlock ( XB1) - Nice palet cleanser after all the grim dark stuff I've been playing.

Shadow Complex Remastered (XB1)- Played through the original on the 360 but enjoying the remaster on game-pass.

Ni no Kuni 2 (PC)- Very whimsical. Very easy but still enjoyable.

So it happened. Dark Souls Remastered finally clicked. Bosses haven’t been as good as DS3 but overall game design feels better. It’s clicked better than Bloodbourne. Might not play much else for another week or two.

Added Prey to the backlog pile.

When I need a short break, that free Cactus game has been a nice distraction.

I'm adding more games to the backlog pile:

XB1: UFC3, Wolfenstein 2, DragonBall FighterZ, Injustice 2, Mafia 3
PS4: Persona 5.

At this point, I don't know if I'll ever be free and clear.
