I finally got around to play yesterday's big Fortnite patch...

The build battling meta is officially under attack. Reddit is flipping out. Every third post is of someone threatening to quit the game.

The Good:

- The starting health of walls go nerfed so it's much harder to ramp rush and build battle. Hooray for engagement variety!

- Storms and storm wait times decreased a bit which means matches are now around 20 minutes long as opposed to 23 minutes long.

- More incentive to chase down Supply Drops now as they drop better stuff on average.

The Bad:

- This was the fourth week in a row (full month!) where all we got was a boring weapon addition. Where are my telenades Epic?!

- The new compact SMG is definitely OP. Shreds walls and players a little to quickly.

There's just a few things I'm hoping to see Epic address.

1. Drop material carrying capacity from 999 each to 499 each (or less).

2. Give the SMG weapons a harder time in the mid range against players. A ton of pro players don't even carry the SCARs anymore.

3. Nerf explosives to how they were before their massive buff.

4. Start focusing on adding unique weapons/items to the game (Airstrikes, Invincibility Potions etc...)

Edit: Aaaand it's patched. SMG dominance lasted for roughly 40 hours. RIP.

Rumors of a sniper rifle that penetrates through the first wall it hits.

Please no.

I saw that but it looks like this weeks item is the return of the Guided Rocket Launcher!!

In other news, here are the two best clips from yesterdays Summer Skirmish. By far the best week yet.

Duo team needs two more kills to win the entire tournament. This is them trying to go for it.

And this is the actual end of the tournament...

I still think they need to nerf materials a bit more but that was pretty cool to see.

The Guided Rocket Launcher has returned. And I am disgusted. They nerfed it so unbelievably hard that it's basically useless at this point. Epic said it's more of a scouting drone right now, which I could get behind, but they nerfed the speed, turn radius, and duration making it...less of a scouting drone? The original version was such a terror in the sky it made for such intense moments. Anyway... here's a few interesting clips with the new one. Maybe I'll warm up to it.

In other news, I've been playing Fortnite for over a year and I've never done this. For context, there's only 3 people left. I've been fighting the guy on my left for a good two minutes at this point. The guy on my right has cozied up eating popcorn the whole time.

My 40 year old brother, who hasn't played videogames seriously since NHL 94, who's never played a twin stick shooter in his life, has probably watched me play Fortnite for 50+ hours over the past few months.

Yesterday he tries playing for the first time. This is the end of his 10th or so game...

What happened? 2nd place guy, kills 3rd place guy, ramps up to 3rd place guys 1x1 (where he died) to loot him. 2nd place guy notices a spike trap on the wall, shoots it, jumps in to grab the loot, but gets caught by a spike trap on the opposite side of the 1x1.

My brother, who takes 30 full seconds to build a single story 1x1 and a KD ratio of 0.0, has a 10% win percentage.

Oh we're back baby!!

But why were you gone?

Because Fortnite just went through, in my opinion, the lamest 6 weeks of it's existence. Epic decided to go through a 6 week stretch of adding nothing but boring ass guns to the game, and mess around with it's building meta.

Last week however, we got the Heavy Sniper Rifle that destroys all building panels (only 1 of them) in one shot. So if an enemy is perched at the top of a fully cured metal 1x1, you can coordinate with your sniping partner to remove cover and go for the snipe. Brilliant addition to the game.

Tomorrow we're getting the Rift-to-go...

Additionally, a few weeks back, a zipline and a grappling hook were found in the games files. Yesterday, at Gamescon, Epic had a zipline at it's booth that attendees could try out.

This has to mean we're getting not only a zipline item soon (yes!), but also a buff to building sometime in the near future (yes!).

Lastly, tomorrow we're getting a big patch. The maps going to morph a little, and the Rift-to-go is releasing, but we're also going to get a bunch of juicy Fortnite datamine leaks

Game of the generation is only getting better.

I've put a lot of time into this game and it's a blast with friends. But I think I'm getting a little sick of it.

I still jump on every now and then but I find myself craving more arena shooters after playing mostly BRs for the good part of a year.

4 new items found in today's datamine...

- Suppressed Assault Rifle: Yawn

- A Shockwave Grenade: Supposedly a legendary variant of the Impulse Grenade. I'm hoping/predicting it propels players a bit more than the Impulse, and gives temporary invincibility from fall damage.

- Quad Launcher: A beefy rocket launcher that leaves fire AOE damage on the ground.

- Flamethrower: There's a chance Epic is giving players a direct counter to wooden bases with two fire items. We'll see if they engulf wood or not soon.

Oh, and look what Epic added to Risky Reels...

And how they changes Tomato Town to Tomato Temple...

GAAS done right.

I hear you. I'm not playing it as much as I did a few months ago either.

With that being said, is there a better game to put down for two or three months and return to than Fortnite?

I'm sure I'll come back to it heavy sooner or later. I have hit a wall at battle pass level 60 the last two seasons though (granted that's still a lot of play time)

My prediction for the next innovation in BR is coming true. We are all witness to the geographical diversification of Fortnite! Praise me! Praise me!

Geographical diversity? You mean new maps?

No. I mean areas are going to start playing differently depending on certain perimeters.

For example, what if there were earthquakes that took place on a certain part of the map that would knock down everyone's buildings every 30 to 90 seconds? What if a different area, say by a research facility, slowly gave all players shield as long as they were within a certain range.

These differences would give the map significantly more flavor. It looks like Epic is doing this, which is absolutely awesome. I called it.

Here's some additional theories...

Holy Patch Day is upon us.

We got a new Heist themed LTM...

A new (Just Cause inspired) item called The Grappler...

Next week's item is going to be the Quad Launcher...

And most interesting, to me at least, we have a few new datamined files found in the game...

- There's currently a giant cube rotating around the map that gives nearby players shiels. Looks like a giant sphere will be popping up soon (perhaps giving health?).

- There's a balloon item added that lets you float up or drop safely from heights.

- And a new item called "Spike Trap Arena Grenade" that allows you to trap players?

- Oh and there's more datamined stuff suggesting that a volcano and lava will be popping up in the map, most likely at the end of season 5.

G.O.T.G.

It appears that there's one or two more people that still don't see the beauty of Fortnites game design in relation to the more traditional Battle Royale games out there. Instead of continuing that lesson in the Blackout thread, we will get everyone up to speed right here. The following lesson will be titled...

"Fortnite as Poetry"

First, let's watch the following clip. A clip where I both channel my inner Anton Chigurh, and illustrate the kind of gameplay variety/storytelling prowess that makes Fortnite the far and away leader of the genre.

Context: There's 10 people left. I find myself a stone's throw from a well known rift hotbed located on the edge of the desert. Because I am both a smart and ruthless killer, I will allow my prey to come to me. The clip picks up after I sit in this bush for about 60 seconds listening to nearby sniper fire.

Now here are the key points you most likely missed.

- That interesting engagement doesn't happen without Epics flavorful map design. I knew the Oasis had rifts. I knew people are drawn to rifts.

- It also doesn't happen if building isn't a key gameplay mechanic. Without building that turns into a 4 second clip with one of us dying right then and there. Instead we have a 90 second high stakes scenario where both players are locked in a dance of death.

- It also illustrates how counterable building has become. This wouldn't be possible when the building meta was at it's peak.

- In today's traditional BR games, you can spray at people close range, you can peak from trees or rocks for the 700th time to get your kill. Heck, you might even be able to knock someone from a vehicle. As of right now though, there's nothing you can do to give you THAT feeling.

As I said, poetry.

Class dismissed.

Judging by the amount of people that post in this thread.... no one cares.

I will continue to play this game occasionally with friends though, like I said it’s fun in small doses but any longer and the arcadey casual nature of the game turns me off. People can talk about how deep the building is and map layout they want that makes it so great, but I think it makes the game more annoying than fun. The kiddies love this game I see why.

Destiny 2 has pulled me away from this. All my friends will move to Black Ops so I imagine I will too.

Ken Levine, is that you? Lol

The giant cube, that's been slowly rolling around the map for the past 6 weeks, has finally done something different. Check it out here...

Looks like you should be able to build as high as you want over Loot Lake without worrying about fall damage now. It'll be interesting to see how battles play out there as players get used to this.

Epics Mark Rein telling people to buckle up.

Game is so dope.

Should make loot lake area more interesting. I always thought it was the worst place on the map

Epic just said that August was Fortnites biggest month yet with 78.3 million unique players playing the game.

That's slightly more than 1% of the world's population.

If anyone is honest enough to admit to themselves that sucking at the game is a major detriment to enjoying the game, look at this...

The TLDR at the top of his post sums it up pretty nicely.

Things like this are why the game has been so successful.

The great thing about this game is that it gives you the same feeling as new release every ten weeks. Can't wait for tomorrow...

Hope they do something to make it interesting again. This season was pretty s***ty.

Darkness Rises baby! Darkness Rises!!

Best part of season 6 is definitely these dark crystals which give you movement speed, low gravity effects, invisibility when stationary, and teleportation...
