Darksiders Series

I guarantee you this game is nothing like Dark Souls.
Yes, which is exactly the problem. I won't play Darksoul game, but if others like, good for them. Its a wannabe (The director said it himself. ) that failed where dark souls succeeded.

That was not my point. My point was that most games with difficult combat get compared to Dark Souls. And I don’t believe for a second that this comparison is apt when it comes to this game.

Interesting. The amount of technical problems is a strange. I played 1 & 2 and really enjoyed both and don’t remember any significant glitches or problems like that. Did they change the game engine? This will be a bargain bin pick up for me.

A bought the game but haven't had time to play it yet with my backlog. Kinda just bought it now to support the devs in hopes of Darksiders 4.

The reviews are all over the place but realistically the metacritic average is right about where I thought it would be.

Personally, I'll hold my judgement until I actually play it because reviews this gen for some reason have been hit or miss for me. Low scoring games have been a blast ( State of Decay 2) while high scoring games have been meh ( Divinity: Original Sin 2)

Yeah I tend to find reviewers very out of touch now days or they give some games a pass for faults.

But as I said I need to finish the first 2

This game has never given me good vibes. Not surprised at all...

Rented it today. Played about 20 minutes and finding the combat to be a little annoying. I’m sure there is a learning but dodge isn’t super effective all the time because you can get hit while dodging, and Fury’s first strike seems too slow.

There have already been 5-10 instances of Fury and an enemy hitting each other at the same time because when I go to attack so does the enemy and they are faster than me

Oh and the very first checkpoint of the game is already annoyingly far from the first boss

I don’t think we have any chance for a fourth installment unfortunately.

That’s really unfortunate to hear. It really sounds like the new developer just couldn’t get it together for this game.

Played through the first boss and then some on PC.

This is going to be a divisive title. They've taken a few things out that some fans loved/hated ( Loot system from DS2, abundance of dungeon crawling from DS1) and added a more streamlined combat. But that's par for the course for the series. DS 2 was nothing like DS1 and DS 3 is not like the first 2. But I would not classify this as a bad game. Its more or less for Darksiders fans, this is not the game that's going to bring in new players.
I might take a break from Assasins Creed: odyseey or Spider-man to play through this really quickly, apparently its not that long, 10 hours some are saying.

D-V-ANT We might get a 4th game. Gunfire games talked about doing a 4th game at Gamescom this year. I know sales will ultimately determine this but its not as if DS 1 or 2 sold super well either.

Well and I would admit that the changes weren’t meant for gamers like me. I am not a souls fan and I don’t enjoy the punishment of frequent deaths, replaying long sections due to unforgiving checkpoints, and borderline cheap enemy difficulty.

The checkpoints are the biggest issue among those, always been a pet peeve for me. Still I plan to bump down to the easiest difficulty and try to complete the game for the story.

Will definitely post more impressions

Oh and I'm not here to imply that the game is perfect by any means. It's the definition of a "AA" game. A mid tier game somewhere between terrible and excellent.

I personally haven't found the combat an issue. I got through the first boss nearly unscathed by dodging and jumping. The checkpoint do suck this time around, that needs to be patched and fixed. The camera could stand a little tweaking as well. I've lost track of enemies at times. Its playing like a 7/10 game right now and that's ok. That's what I expect from Darkiders.

Yep I fully expect the game to improve as I get used to the systems, and I enjoy the story in these games enough to push through.

It’s annoying that this is the second straight prequel lol, I don’t know why they would do that. I want to see a fourth so I can see the end of the story!

Ah sh*t. I loved the first one, the second was decent, and I had high hopes for this. Betting it will be on sale somewhere for $30 before Xmas...I’ll snag it then.

As people progress in the game, please keep impressions coming!

New developer is pretty much all the original team

They could have a simple & proven checkpoint system like on GOW or Tomb Raider where you restart close to where you fail on the start of a tough fight, but no, they want you to travel all the way to designated checkpoints that often few & far between. What value does it add!

Welp, sorry guys, I got no more impressions. I hate poor checkpoints so much I can’t bring myself to play the game. I just feel like all that’s waiting for me is frustration and replaying the same sections over and over.

Also annoyed at the approach to the story. Who knew that in January of 2010 after seeing the awesome scene with War watching the other horseman descending to earth to join him in battle, we would still be waiting to see what happens next after 9 freaking years and 2 more games in the series lol

So dumb :smash:

I loved the first two games, but I'm honestly struggling to enjoy this game.

I hate how even trash mobs are even deathly annoying if you aren't paying 100% attention now.

Actually, most of the game feels like a chore, especially when the game design lends itself to dying/repeating so often.

Finished the game. Took about 11 hours. There's alot that can be fixed with some patches. There's alot that cannot be fixed with patches.

Starting off with what needs to be fixed with patches:
1. Checkpoint system. The checkpoints are way too far from each other. Needs to be replaced with a straight save system or closer checkpoints.
2. Difficulty. The game is hard. Even on normal difficulty the game is hard. Couple that with the checkpoint system, you've got a recipe for disaster.
3. Glitches/Crashes. Had the game crash on me once while playing it on the PC. Again coupled with the checkpoint system, I had to do alot over. Also, I via glitch, I was able to skip through an entire dungeon by accident.
4. Tighter camera. Got real old losing track of enemies and getting hit from off screen.
5. Enemies scaling with you. I hate that mechanic.

Things that cannot be fixed with patches:
1. Poor level design. A few of the areas are just designed poorly and seem only to be there to frustrate the player. The areas dominated by wind and the water ones especially.
2.Platforming. Just doesn't seem to be their thing and should have been cut.
3. A Map. Goes had in hand with level design. The lack of a map was more or less so the player doesn't see how small and linear some of the stages are, but that is no excuse for no map. The compass like HUD was limited useful.

Things I liked:
1. Story. Surprisingly ok considering its another side story set roughly at the same time if not a little before Darksiders 1.
2. Fury. She grew on me. I found it amusing that most of the bosses referred to her as the dumb one due to her rage/blood-lust.
3.You kinda sorta find out what Strife is doing during the events of DS1 and 2. If they do make a DS4 I think it will be a full blown sequel that moves the story forward now that all 4 horsemen's actions have been accounted for.
4. Combat. Takes a bit to get used too but after a while it clicks. It is a shame they removed the execution moves that 1 and 2 had.

Overall, I'd still rate it a 7/10. Not a great game but not mediocre. Could have used a bigger budget or/and more development time.

Yeah I watched the story online and I also thought it was surprisingly good. Seems like they handled the sins really well and Fury was an interesting character. I also like that they teased the next Horseman more this time.

The thing is IMO if the fix the checkpoint/save issue and make the combat a bit more forgiving, this game easily becomes a 8/10. Everything else is tolerable after that.

I forgot to mention that the boss fights are sublime. Each boss takes a different strategy, though dodging is a mainstay. With that said, there are hidden bosses that add an extra scene or two toward the end. The hidden bosses were tough as nails for me. Others said they were easy but it took everything I had to beat them.

Sequel has pretty much already been confirmed

Yeah I think so. Beyond the story part, the product development director said before the game was released that they would be happy if the game sold 100k copies in its first few months. Steam spy(Not the most accurate, I know) has it at 70k on steam alone, so it might have met its overall goals.

Playing the first after years of owning and never finishing.

Lot of fun and get the feeling it's received some improvements on Xbox one bc program?

Yeah, the visuals got an upgrade. Darksiders and Darksiders 2 got 4K enhanced.

Defeated Stygian.

Actually got the game back in 2012 but for what ever reason stopped playing. Not sure why as I'm really enjoying it.

D1 and D2 have XBox One Remastered versions on Game Pass plus you can play the regular BC 360 version if you own them. I’ve been wanting to play the first two for years. I think I will since they got 4K updates.
