Groove Music and Spotify: FAQ

As of October 2, 2017, we’re excited to announce that we’re partnering with Spotify to bring the world’s largest music streaming service to you. We know that access to the best streaming experience, the largest catalog of music, and a variety of subscriptions are on the top of your list. Now you can move your curated playlists and collection from Groove directly into Spotify. Groove Music Pass users eligible under Spotify’s terms will also be able to receive 60 free days of Spotify Premium (see below for eligibility details).

After December 31, 2017, the Groove Music Pass streaming service will be discontinued. Before then, you’ll be able to use your Groove Music Pass through the end of your subscription. If your Pass subscription goes beyond December 31, 2017, we will give you a prorated refund or a Microsoft gift card (see details below). We’ll continue to update the Groove Music app so you can play and manage the music you’ve purchased and downloaded to your PC or uploaded to OneDrive or another cloud storage service. But the app will no longer stream or play Groove Music Pass content after December 31, 2017.

What’s happening to the Groove Music Pass?
As of December 31, 2017, the Groove Music Pass streaming service will be discontinued and will no longer be available. The built-in Groove Music app will continue to play all the music you’ve purchased and downloaded or uploaded to OneDrive, but will no longer stream or play any Groove Music Pass content.

What's happening to the Groove Music app?
We’ll continue to update the Groove Music app so you can play your purchased music, including the tracks you’ve uploaded to OneDrive. On December 31, 2017, the option to stream, purchase, and download music from Groove Music will be discontinued. After December 31, 2017, you’ll still be able to listen to your purchased music if it has been downloaded.

Shame as I've really enjoyed the service. Guess we now know why the app finally came to Xbox...

The Zune was great

Yeah it was. I still use the Zune media player to sort my music and update/edit album info.

It was also great because I bought a 120GB Zune that came with all the accessories right after they announced the Zune HD , it was on clearance for $160 Canadian and I used the hell out of it for years. Then last year I stumbled across it and realized I'd never use it again, sold it it for $280 on eBay. Could not believe they are actually worth more now if in good condition with accessories.

Am I the only one who doesn't use streaming music services? I still just go look at reviews, listen to clips based on stuff I like and then download it on my desktop, copy it to my phone. Good quality, saved for life, organised as artist, album.

The whole idea of all these young people not "owning" albums and having a legit music library is a bit sad to me. I feel like most of them don't have a proper home stereo system to listen to it at it's optimal quality.

I still buy albums but also have plenty of singles that I dl off Groove which you could always use offline with a sub

I like how if you buy a CD from Amazon you get the MP3 downloads as well (without much DRM).

I understand that you can't rest on your laurels and you have to make change. Sure, Groove obviously wasn't successful. But who is at fault for that? I would say MS is at fault. They didn't promote it properly, and what was the incentive to use their product?

I think MS needs to figure out what they want, and what the consumer wants. We don't want them to create Zune, then kill it off. Create their digital sound system, then kill it off. Create their routers, then kill them off. Create @msn.com email, create @live.com email, create @hotmail.com email, then create @outlook.com and then kill them all off. Create Microsoft Money then kill it off. Create Microsoft Tax Saver and kill it off. Create Kinect and then kill it off. Create Xbox Music and kill it off. Create Groove music then kill it off. No doubt they will kill of Mixer. Create endless product after endless product and killing them off. That is one of the reasons, other than Xbox, that I can't stand Microsoft's products.

The only "problem" with Groove was that everyone already had Spotify. I already had a Spotify subscription and already had a bunch of playlists. The only reason I used Groove was that it was the only way to listen on Xbox. There was no other reason, and once Spotify worked on Xbox, Groove was done.

I still liked it because you could upload music to OneDrive so you could add music not available and add it to playlists. So, those bands like Tool, Peter Gabriel who never let their stuff stream, you can add them along with the rest of your music.

Was great for anyone with a windows phone. I know it was also available on android and iPhone but no offline play for dl song's.

I still have a Zune HD that works great. I got the email about this and was told to check my music to download. Didn't realize I had purchased so much through Zune/Groove. Think most of it is already downloaded but something I'll have to get around to sometime.

You can now transfer from groove to Spotify via a W10 pc or on Xbox one

So it says you can transfer ripped music to Spotify on a pc/ laptop yet it's not working. Is it a paid service feature?

I still have a 1 year Xbox Music pass card I never redeemed. Saw that you can get credit at MS store. Probably buy Spotifty...lol

Spotify is a great service and worth the subscription, imo. Great sound quality, great selection, great apps. I usually stream right to my home or car receivers.

The Xbox app is really cool, how you can just cast with your phone. On the down side, Xbox seems to push all the audio sound to the L/R front speakers. Haven't tried it in-game yet, though. Not sure if it's still the case, in-game.

Not set up a premium Spotify account yet cause it doesn't seem to add my ripped cds?

Did you see if that already had most or all of your collection available? You can download as much as you want, for the premium version.

I'm just waiting for when it is shut down, and MS gets pressued (either by suit or by PR suits) to help a woman restore her Groove library. The woman's name, of course, will be Stella.

Its gone :(

Spotify isn't filling the void for me. Several songs that transferred over are either the live version or a crap cover version and the piss poor attempt at supporting ripped cds is annoying.

Might have to go with Amazon music

The big plus for Spotify is it has a huge library. Most everything is on there (there are some notable exceptions).

I hate how they put live songs into main lists though. I haven't found any good options other than going through and rebuilding playlists. The also sometimes have multiple versions of the same album (again with live stuff at the end which you may or may not want).

Once you spend a few hours building playlists and organizing them into folders it is a little nicer. Of course it does not alphabetize anything so organizing into folders is key.

One nice thing is you can control Spotify from other devices - say you're listening to music on Xbox in a game and you want to skip a song - you can do that say on your phone or a PC or tablet. Just connect in to the same account. So, I can walk my dogs and listen on my phone, then switch the music to my Xbox after and continue listening.

I do miss Groove. I bought CDs specifically to rip them legally into Groove and add them to my playlists. Amazon is a no-go for me unless they support Xbox and PS for background music.

Why is this s*** still a thing?? It's one album but unless I make it a playlist I can't listen to out from start to finish without interruption.
