Surprised to see that it's keeping pace with the Wii.

Not really surprising though. PS4 and Wii are two of the GOAT consoles. Ya that's right, Wii is one of the best consoles ever made whether people want to admit it or not. What it did for gaming goes beyond numbers. PS4 is just the best ever at this point. They couldn't craft a better console if they tried.

You're on quite a roll lately, TD.

Wii made it hard to be a Nintendo fan.
It was Terrible just terrible.

Monster Hunter World continues to do very well; now at 6 million shipped:

"Capcom announced last month that Monster Hunter World enjoyed the strongest first three days of any entry in the series, with 5 million units shipped worldwide across PS4 and Xbox One. As of February 9, that figure has now reached 6 million units -- something it's done faster than any game in Capcom's history, according to the publisher."

I like the look of the game but the gameplay just felt hollow during the beta so I decided not to buy it.

Yeah, I don't think it's for me, either, but I'm glad it's so successful. I've been surprised at how well-received it is.

Take Two says GTA Online was the single largest driver of recurrent consumer spending during the past quarter. It's confirmed GTA Online will have more content updates. The game has now sold in over 90 million units worldwide!

For reference, this means that the game sold in 15 million units in the past year. This is 15 million units in 2017 for a game that came out in 2013. This means it outsold most games that launched in 2017, such as Battlefront II which sold in 7 million units in the year.

Here is the UKIE/GfK Top Ten for the week ending February 10th:

Last Week This Week Title
New Entry 1 Shadow of Colossus
2 2 UFC 3
1 3 Monster Hunter World
4 4 FIFA 18
5 5 Grand Theft Auto V
3 6 Call of Duty: WWII
7 7 Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
8 8 Super Mario Odyssey
15 9 Assassin's Creed Origins
Re-Entry 10 The Evil Within II

SoC outsold the original by 70%

Nice debut for Shadow of the Colossus. "The original PS2 title also debuted at No1, back in W7 2006, however launch week sales of the new PS4 version are 73% greater than that of its predecessor."

Sending a good message to developers!

To me it's not about old gamers buying the game again but new or current gamers that never experienced this game. I like how the remaster is outsourced so as to not take away from developer resources. The game, less the controls, is awesome.

Big publishers are doing much better this generation than the last:

Here's why (this is from Ubisoft):

multiplatform, microtransactions (GAAS), and listening to consumer feedback is what I get from that chart.

My takeaway is that GaaS/service games are much more profitable, so that's where the industry is heading. We already knew that, of course. But this time, there's a chart.

I'm sure this doesn't count for reason A, B, or C but f*** it...

Some interesting info about where your $60 goes:

Physical
$15 (25%) goes to the distributor -- Gamestop, Best Buy, amazon, whatever.
$12 (20%) goes to Sony/MS/Nintendo for licensing fee + costs to make discs
$33 (55%) goes back to publisher

Digital
$18 (30%) goes to Sony/MS/Nintendo for licensing/distribution fee
$42 (70%) goes back to the publisher

Bottom line, the publisher gets 55% for physical units and 70% for digital.

I guess it's good that Gamestop is selling digital games now too but that 25% hit from going digital seems like a huge loss to them. I wonder if they are still doing just as good financially by focusing on other revenue streams.

Yeah, Gamestop must be hurting. Both Sony/MS/Nintendo and the publisher make more on a digital sale (50% more and 27% more, respectively) -- and that doesn't even factor in the lost revenue due to used game sales -- so they will continue to push hard for that, squeezing out the middle man.

Not only your not only that, but also let's keep in mind that the progression to more GaaS and less "beat it and return it" will also necessarily dilute the number of used games even further. Which, of course, doesn't bother me much at all.

Yup, that's going to hurt them, too.

The only angle that concerns me is that I want the ability to buy and sell used games. If I don't have that option, I'm not going to be buying many games on release, because the vast majority aren't worth $60 to me. But I don't see any signs that physical discs or the used game market is going away completely, so I'm good.

They are trending down, but holding surprisingly well. They are still profitable making about 3% net income year after year.

However, the stock is at its lowest since 2005, so investors aren't liking it. I'd avoid it too.

I don't see how they will survive long term unless something major happens. At some point in the next 5-10 span, I see them trending down to Blockbuster Video kind of retailer support.

Lucky for them, they have the benefit of trade in deals and used games (at high margin) to keeps thing humming along. On the other hand, music stores like HMV did not have those transactions. They sold new stuff only.

I rarely even buy on release unless I strongly suspect I will like it. I've been waiting for a number of games to come down, and have picked up many games digital for less than half-price.

And while I don't disagree with your right to do that, do you think maybe that practice may have just a smidge to do with the lamented-about death of the AAA single player story driven game and the industry's move towards games that they can make money on a recurring basis?
