If you're interested, here is Mat P's (NPD) follow-up comments on his earlier statement about Xbox being #1 if you look at sales and growth together, for the first part of this year.

"Sales. I've mentioned it in both the media releases and here... this year sales between the consoles has been very, very close. Yes, PS4 has come out on top both months, but, as I've said in every month, all 3 platforms this year are doing very well so far. If I had to give grades to the 3 platforms so far this year I would grade both PS4 and Xbox One as A-, Switch a B+, just because it's in its first Jan-Feb period and I expected a bit more than we got. Still great, still on a record setting pace. My own grades. You don't have to agree.

"Growth. I've also mentioned in the media releases that Xbox One and Switch have been the catalysts for year on year growth. Now, Switch is easy, it wasn't around last Jan-Feb. Xone has had fantastic growth, possibly driven by some of the reasons I've listed above*, among maybe some others I'm not thinking of. PS4 continues to do VERY well, but it's not a leading contributor to growth. It doesn't need to be, it's selling at amazing levels. Growth would be a very big ask for something doing so well. So, to grade growth, I'd give Xone an A, PS4 and Switch Bs.

"So, taking into account BOTH sales AND growth, I see Xbox One as being the best performing console on a YTD basis."

* Here are the reasons he listed as possibly contributing to Xbox growth:

- Favorable comp period.
- PS4s big Nov/Dec promotions may have pulled some demand forward.
- PUBG/GamePass announcements.
- High cross ownership, PS4 folks buying an Xone as a second or third console.
- One X is still relatively new to market

With SoT doing so well, it looks like a promising long term game.

Is SoT doing well? I can't tell from UK numbers, they are so distorted -- no digital, small territory (no offense, Brits). I know it's getting streamed a lot, but it's impossible to know how much of that is full sales and how much is Gamepass.

It sold better than any new MS ip. It's the fourth best seller on Xbox Live right now behind FC5, Fortnite and PUBG and still top 5 in UK.

Seems good to me.

Yeah it's hard to tell, longevity is what's going to matter with this type of game though, it's light on content right now and is totally centered on multiplayer. Being that it's on game pass we'll likely never get a breakdown between actual copies sold vs people who play it. Greenburg said "game pass isn't included in best selling new IP" which likely means that GP is included in the 2 million number.

The fact that its charting high with gamepass existing and a so so reception is impressive

Although it has fallen to #14 on the most played chart so it doesn't seem to retaining these people all that well

I wouldn't say it's getting streamed all that much. I check Twitch almost daily and it seems to have settled down to around 20th most of the time. For a big budget game that "was made for streaming" that's not too impressive 3 weeks after launch. I was hoping MS might support the game moving forward but I think that ship has sailed. MS should have kept that thing in the oven.

I only tried it twice and never saw another player but it just seemed like the type of game that you'll really need a dedicated group of people to play with on a consistent basis if you are going to enjoy it. From what I've been reading it's extremely light on content and that's a huge mistake if you want to grab people early and keep them coming back, it seems like this game should have been held back as you said.

It's certainly no Fortnite.

Initial sales..
When you have little anything can sell..
Lets see if it has legs when other more solid games release(i say it don't)

I thought SoT's was originally supposed to be a $30 game? It's probably what they should have went with.
They never talked priced. Just more silly rumors like when some claimed it was F2P.

Mat P. (NPD) said that when metacritic averages are over 90, a very small difference in review scores (e.g., a two-point difference, say 93 vs. 95) makes a significant impact on game sales. That only pertains if the metacritic average is over 90, though. Below 90, average review scores still matter to game sales, but not so much; it requires a 10-point difference to have an impact. "Only ten point breaks 'matter' when it comes to mc impact, unless one gets to 90+ territory."

https://www.resetera.com/posts/6731462/

Found it interesting to know that even small differences in metacritic averages can have a significant impact on game sales, and that these differences become more pronounced when scores are 90+.

p.s. I should clarify that this doesn't mean mc averages cause sales to rise. More likely, mc averages are associated with things that cause sales to rise -- e.g., wide-spread acclaim, positive press, good publicity, high quality, etc.

UK is Xbox's second biggest market Andy.

Yeah, that's true. Something like 20%, iirc? I guess I was thinking in global terms vs. Xbox only, but of course SoT is Xbox only.

I still think UK stats are hard to base much on, because they're missing digital. I expect we'll have a better idea of how SoT did once NPD comes out.
