What movies have you seen recently?

War for the planet of the apes on 4K Blu Ray, loved it! I still can't believe how they make the apes look so good and convey the emotion through their facial expressions and eyes.

Saw Lincoln last night (it's on Netflix). Great movie! Captures the complexities of the Events quite well.

Jurassic World 2... Pretty bad, but oddly watchable.

Zero Wonder. Completely forgettable, boring, predictable "story". Middling, phoned-in performances. Depressing and pessimistic. More Genetic dino weapons. Evil humans, animal mistreatment, yadda yadda. Stupid, unrealistic behaviour from people and dinos.

Was well shot. Great CG. Plenty of action, and a... er.. different take in the Horror movie angle. Lot's of dumb, though.

I really need to rent Annihilation when I have time. Looks to be right up my Sci Fi ally.

Definitely do it, it might be my favorite sci-fi movie of the last few years. I'm planning on picking up the 4K Blu-Ray at Best Buy sometime soon.

Tried to watch The Last Jedi again on Netflix, that movie is terrible by any standard. Forget about all the drama with Luke, there were a million other problems with the film. Rey’s ridiculous “training”, everything with Holdo and Poe, the pointless Finn side story and were we supposed to root for him being saved at the expense of the entire rebellion?? Soooooo stupid. Seriously don’t understand how anyone likes that movie.

I then rewatched the Matrix. That movie has held up so well, it’s a shame about how Revolutions turned out.

Finally saw Deadpool 2.

I was kind of surprised the future world Cable comes from remained fairly vague.

Amusing movie though and I enjoyed the jokes on other superhero properties, especially the subtle reference to the Hulk lol.

Last two I've seen:

The Hunt - 8.5/10 (2012)

Watched this because a few guys over at, err, WCG, suggested it. Definitely a haunting film. I actually had to pause it at a couple of points because I was getting so angry at the characters--even though their reasoning behind their actions was justified. Certainly takes a look at child sex abuse that isn't afraid of shying away from some hard hitting questions. Definitely give it a go. It's a tough watch, but the performances (Mads Mikkelsen) are absolutely incredible.

The Act of Killing - 10/10

I don't hand out 10s. I might give one out a year at most, but I felt that this documentary absolutely deserved it. If you haven't seen the trailer, check it out here:

It takes place in Indonesia, where back in the 1960's a genocide of over 1 million communists took place. Since the party in power that committed these crimes is still in power, no one has ever been persecuted for their actions (international community has ignored this conflict). The documentary filmmakers approached Anwar Congo to reenact the events in a film, and closely follows the consequences. I won't give too much away, but the conversations between Anwar and his fellow executioners is pretty damn fascinating--they know the crimes they committed were cruel, but at the same time they must uphold a respectable image for their gang. It follows the notion and thought-process that many historical viewpoints follow, the idea that "history is written by the winners". It's a maddening and rewarding character study, adding a very human side to a very sadistic person.

It played at an art house cinema where I live (Oklahoma), so I imagine it won't be too hard for most people to find. Definitely check it out when you can, I have a hard time believing we'll see another documentary this good for the rest of the year--even if the Academy Awards tell you differently.

Your name at wcg?

Ant-Man and The Wasp

Enjoyable sequel and I liked this villain for not just being an evil version of the hero like Yellowjacket.

I also liked this really pushed hard into another world which is something Dr. Strange teased heavily, but didn't really deliver on.

It was strangely vague on what was going on with Janet in the Quantum realm o_O

I'm hoping that Goliath and Ghost can play a role in the next Avengers.

Saw Hereditary and A Quite Place. Both were good. Shockingly good, actually. I was baffled at how much Hereditary got under my skin. Super eerie flick in my opinion.

Hereditary 8/10

A Quite Place 9/10

Sorry to Bother You - Average

Really weird movie with a lot of on the surface statements and subtext. I need to read more about it. It may make it a “good.”

Annihilation - 8/10 Well I would say I liked it... but as a whole I feel like it could have been better. It looked great and had some very interesting ideas. Still not sure how I feel about the ending. From what I remember I read awhile back it’s based on some books? I would like to see more.

Everybody Wants Some - 7/10 Had a good time watching this film while sipping some beers. I enjoyed the old school feel to it they just don’t make teen/young adult movies like this anymore, a low budget film from the director of Dazed and Confused and Boyhood. It is about a group of college baseball students in Texas right before the school year starts.

I got a subscription to Shudder a few weeks back, watched several hours of the Joe Bob Briggs marathon yesterday. Saw all of these, looking forward to getting caught up on the movies I missed when I was sleeping or the site had crashed.

Basket Case - I'm not sure how I'd still never seen this, also not sure if I like or hate this.
Demons - The last 10 or 15 minutes of this are hilarious in a perfect way. Motorcycle, helicopter, machete, etc. I'll be watching the sequel on Shudder soon.
The Legend of Boggy Creek - Unintentional humor, ridiculous songs, etc. I have no idea how this made so much money back in the day.
Hellraiser - I've seen this several times when I was young, edited for TV. Pretty sure it was my first time seeing the "real" version. Still pretty dang creepy and messed up.
Pieces - My favorite of all mentioned. Unintentional hilarity, insane kills, crazy overdubbing, surprisingly good cinematography. I may have to pick this one on on Blu-Ray if I can find it onsale.

Have you seen Candyman? That is based on work from Clive Barker who also created Hellraiser. Both great movies.

That's another I know I've seen the original and (likely several) sequels edited on TV when I was young, but never the original. It was on Shockwave''s (horror podcast) list of the 100 best horror films recently, so I've been planning on checking it out. I'll have to bump that up in priority now.

There is another Clive Barker movie worth a look after seeing that called The Midnight Meat Train. That would be a good movie to see after Candyman.

I think it has a little spotty CGI unfortunately, but it still intrigued me.
