What game released in 2017 would you choose for GOTY?

I am not sure what my choice is yet but am curious to see what others choices are.
(will edit when i make a choice)

Probably Horizon Zero Dawn. Mario Odyssey is great as well but haven't had a lot of time with it yet.

The best I've played is Horizon Zero Dawn... The controls are damn near perfect for an Open World game, the animation is amazing (Especially the Robo-dino movements), lush beautifully flowing environments with an interesting story, good characters, runs super smooth, and breathtaking effects with a day to night-time cycle. To add, it's just super fun going up against huge robot enemies, and having different options in how to take them down.

The only things IMO that holds it back are... Weak RPG/LOOT system, dumb human enemies, simple/boring/overpowered hand to hand combat, and very little Boss encounters.

Now even though I haven't played Mario Odyssey yet... If I did, I think that would get my vote over Horizon Zero Dawn

Screw Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, Zero Dawn, and any other underserving game.

The Game of the Year for 2017 is either Player Unknown Battlegrounds or Fortnite Battle Royale. The path of the entire industry shifted due the the Battle Royale genre.

LOL @ Horizon votes! Really? Out of all the incredibly deep SP storylines that have come out?

Divinity 2 / Hellblade for me. I'm not sure which one.

Horizon.

If I owned a Switch, my vote might be different. But it might not.

Horizon is great

Horizon is pretty good, but it's story is nowhere near GOTY material. There are so many other games that came out this year that establishes a much better story.

Resident Evil 7
Nier: Automata
Nioh
Divinity 2
Wolfenstein 2
Breath of the Wild
AC: Origins

Being GOTY isn't just about story for most though but Horizon has a better story than some of those games.

No it's not about having JUST a better story. But GOTY is simply not about the best-looking console exclusive either. It's about innovation in gameplay, great character interaction and amazing storytelling. Horizon has neither of the last two and it's gameplay is no different than Far Cry: Primal (in 3rd person). If any of the attributes I mentioned is a sound basis for GOTY, then it should clearly go to Divinity 2 or Hellblade - which hits on an emotional level not seen before in a game.

I'm not going to dogg someone's choice, but I agree. Horizon was pretty good, but I still lost interest. I do think it's a tad overhyped, but it's still very good.

I haven't played many of those listed, but I have equally enjoyed many games this year. For instance, I enjoyed MAD Max every bit as much as Horizon ZD. Maybe more. Regardless, I find it difficult to pick anything from what I've played. There was no Witcher 3 for me this year ;) from what I've seen of it, Zelda might have done it, though.

Great year for me.

I watched it being played in another room.

The other person wasn't playing with headphones? That's too bad. It's the dev-rec'd way to play and makes it much more immersive.

Anyhow, I'd put Hellblade's story up against any other this year. Yakuza 0's story was also very good. Both of them were insane, but in different ways.
