Well its not unfinished game of the year so that seems like just as valid of an argument to exclude it as yours is to give it all the awards because it's popular.

You're right. It's not unfinished game of the year and its not finished game of the year. It's just Game of the Year.

Is PUBG a game?

For issues of discussion, I think personal GotY is more interesting. Otherwise it's just a popularity contest. I couldn't give two s***s what "wins" the awards outside of maybe I'll look into it if I haven't played it. For me, as this is an entertainment product, the only GotY that matters in MY GotY...

It's like the Academy Awards- There have been nominees that I think are awful, but if they get on the list, maybe I'll check 'em out to see what the hub ub is about...

Believe it or not, I actually want someone here to say "You're wrong for these reasons...".

I think you're right that it's an industry-defining game. But I don't think that makes it a GOTY. I think a GOTY has to have a certain quality, and PUBG just doesn't have it (not that I've seen, anyhow).

As a crude measure of that quality, look at aggregate review scores. No way in a year with Mario and Zelda, do you give GOTY to PUBG.

I don't even know what PUBG would rate on console. 80? 85?

It hasn't come out yet. So I can't give any game GOTY before it even debuts on console.

I don't know how else to build a case though. When you watch courtroom dramas, the defense doesn't say "In my opinion my client didn't do it, but you're free to believe what you want." They say "My client didn't do it and here's why..." Same for the prosecution.

Believe it or not, I actually want someone here to say "You're wrong for these reasons...". Not "Yeah well, that's just, like, your opinion man."

Also, this is a Game of the Year thread! It's not supposed to be fun. It's supposed to be a slug fest where friendships are tested, and in some cases completely ruined.

Well, why don't you just make the case for PUBG being GOTY, then? Instead you spend a lot of time criticizing and running down other people's choices. Just focus on making your case. Stop being condescending about other people's choices, and just focus on making your own case. Counselor.

Mixed? That doesn't sound good.

I don't see how you give GOTY to a game that gets mixed reviews. Especially in a year with Zelda and Mario, two games that will be among the highest rated of all time. Just makes no sense to me.

Which is hopefully more meaningful that metacritc scores and units sold. I'd be interested in WHY it's GotY material.

Not sure how much stock I put into Steam reviews but when it is sitting there with 55% positive its hard to ignore.

I don't see how that is different than a Hollywood blockbuster that is enjoyable and makes tons of money but is clearly not the best film and therefore wins no awards.

55% positive. Ouch.

Yeah, very popular game, the industry will chase it. It's industry-defining, in a way.

It just doesn't have the quality you expect in a goty. At least, I'm not seeing it in that review score. I'm interested to see how it fares on Xbox.

I'm wondering what the votes would be like here if everyone played through re7 psvr. I know horror is kinda niche and so is psvr. The 3 people I know on here and 2 that I know personally that have played all consider it to be next level stuff.

If we were to award "person of the year", doesn't it make sense that the award would go to someone like Elon Musk or Rose McGowan (Don't get caught up on that Union. Just trying to make a point), rather than your best friend or mother?

Where is the fun in discussion if everyone is just choosing their best friend/mom?

Giving a public award to a game based strictly on personal feelings doesn't seem right to me. I think we have to include the public when giving a public award.

Does that check out to you? Does it make sense?

It's not quite the same thing. You aren't voting for a game you made yourself. I can't vote for something I haven't played. It would be meaningless.

What you do is say what your pick is and then tell us why. That's a more interesting conversation than "boy, everyone seems to like this one a lot, let's pick that". What's the point? It's just a popularity contest. This is a forum and makes more sense to discuss why we like what we like individually in order to share that with others. It's deeper and can help us get a sense of why we like the games we do.

Yeah, that game was one thing that sold me on VR. It sounds great.

Well PUBG must be something original at least. I seen tons of janky PC shooters every time i watch a Jim Sterling video and they dont sell 20m.

But Mario does have a new hat.

The reason Nier Automata is my game of the year is because it's the only game this year so far that prevented me from putting down the controller. It was like that addicting book you just can't put down and get to the next chapter to see what is next. I found it to have cool elements in it such as side scrolling mixed with 3D as well as over to top view and gameplay. The game wasn't unfair in difficulty, and had a very unique set of characters. They were unique to me because I am not a Japanese type game person. The fact that it had numerous endings to play through, using different characters and different abilities made it so that the game was not a grind.

Horizon Zero Dawn feels just like more of the same old same old, and I can barely convince myself to finish it.

Cuphead, while probably the best art direction game I have played this gen, is also too difficult for me. I love the gameplay itself, but I suck bad at it, so my desire to defeat it is not there.

I haven't played Zelda, I haven't played Mario, I haven't played Divinty, I haven't played Hellblade, I haven't played PUBG and I haven't played RE7.

That is how I made my decision for my personal GOTY. I haven't finished Forza 7 (almost done though), I haven't finished GT Sport, I haven't finished AC Origins, I haven't finished COD WWII. But I know for sure that Forza 7 is not my GOTY. GT Sport hasn't held me like Nier did. So that leaves me with Origins and COD to add to my choices, but I won't know until I play them completely.

For now, Nier it is.

Horizon felt really fresh to me, not "more of the same old, same old," but different strokes. Robot dinosaurs is new for an RPG, at least new to me. I thought Aloy was a great new character, and the world was beautiful and fascinating to explore. Loved the combat. Loved searching the cauldrons. Loved just exploring the world. The visuals and the animation are fantastic.

The story was not groundbreaking or stellar, but it was pretty interesting. It kept me guessing, and there were a couple of interesting revelations. I thought the ending was good. Voice acting was excellent. I loved the character models, too.

I'm looking forward to playing it in 4K soon. I've heard the expansion addressed a lot of the complaints about the game, like facial animations and lip synch.

What I said? Yes. Or else I wouldn't have said it.

So it makes sense that a game with no hype around it, a game that looks, shall we say "brown", sold 20 million copies on its own merit AND a game who's concurrent daily numbers dwarf the almighty Dota 2, scored a 55% positive rating with gamers?

That doesn't get your spidey sense tingling just a bit? Come on Andy, you're better than this!

I couldn't tell what you were referring to in my post.

I have no idea if 55 is an accurate rating for the game. I've never played it, only seen it on videos. Not my thing, so I don't pay much attention. If you're saying it's better than 55, ok, I'll take your word for it. Maybe a 75 or 80. We'll see when it reviews on Xbox.

Why is Divinity 2 not a choice for GOTY on the Game Awards? They have it in as best RPG so it not like they are ignoring the game. That is bulls***, Geoff.

Well, my response was in relation to you saying "Ouch" upon finding out PUBG's gamer score of 55%. I assumed you put some stock into that score somehow aiding in you discrediting it as Game of the Year this year.

Dota 2, which is arguably the greatest game of all time, has a 5.5 user score on Metacritic.

Most of you are probably unfamiliar with this but multiplayer communities are notoriously toxic. Games in this genre frequently get bombed on sites like Metacritic and OpenCritic by strange, angry multiplayer gamers.

Also, you probably shouldn't pre review PUBG on XBox and call that the score. From the sounds of it, there is concern among the PUBG community that the XBox version is in trouble and Micrisoft is just trying to push it out the door this year before it's ready. Additionally, the XBox version of PUBG isn't what's on PC. It's going to take some time before the two versions align in terms of content and polish.

Objection!

I honestly don't recall doing this but will try to be sensative going forward.

If I may ask Union one more question...

Does a year ever pass where there is a generally accepted GotY (think Witcher 3 in 2015), and you say to yourself "It wasn't my GotY but the Witcher 3 (or any other game) definitely deserved it."

So what is it exactly you think you are correcting me on here?

Rather than trying to understand my point you made assumptions. Basically everything you said was meaningless.

The point stands that the term "nothing to play" does not apply. There is plenty to play. Being able to play it on another system too is irrelevant. It's a slow year for first party. Doesn't matter to me because I have more options than I can responsibly afford... Only Fanboys care about this.

I personally don't have much interest in Sony's first party offerings aside from a few games, and I haven't felt a real desire to get back to them. That's ok, because it's personal preference. I'm glad I have my PS4 for when the ones I do care about come around. That doesn't change the fact that I also want my Halos, Cupheads, Forzas, Gears' and Oris.

You are getting on people for not agreeing with your personal assessment of what others value.

Sounds to me like damage control. When gamers say "blank has no games" they don't mean literally. Microsoft output is mediocre and people who defend are guess what? Fanboys...

No it's about Menace claiming 2017 was s*** but he doesn't own a Ps4 or Switch. It's fine to have your owns personal taste but don't trash tone of games you never played. This is where I have an issue. My personal taste have literally zero to do with it.

We live in an era gamers would rather s*** on games than actually play games.

It has an 87% on Steam

I still wouldn't worry about the PUBG scores considering it was highly rated until a few weeks ago, when an influx of cheaters stormed the game. Once they fix that issue it'll be status quoue again.

Also, it's gotten a 55% yet look at how many people are deciding to play it tonight, lol.
