Andy's Thread of Obscure Games

The purpose of the thread is to draw attention to under-the-radar games that most people on this forum will not give two sh*ts about, but which someone with a taste for the unusual might find interesting. They won't all be quality titles -- some will be turkeys -- but they'll be interesting in one way or another.

Here is the list of games I've placed in the thread (updated as we go):

1. Republique
2. Mount and Blade
3. Subnautica
4. Koi
5. Adam's Venture: Origins
6. Shadow of the Beast
7. Everything
8. Oxenfree
9. Toren
10. Virginia

Republique

I hadn't heard anything about this game until today. It was announced for release on PS4 on March 22, three weeks from now. It sounded kind of interesting, so I thought I'd put up a thread, just to help draw awareness. It seems to be flying under the radar.

It's a 5-part episodic series, but they're releasing all 5 parts together. It's been out on PC for a while, or at least the first 4 episodes have.

Here is the trailer:

Here's a developer's description:

"For those of you not familiar with Republique, it’s a story-driven stealth action game heavily inspired by the 32-bit era. At the start of the game, players form a partnership with Hope, a young woman trapped inside a secret totalitarian nation called Metamorphosis. From there, players hack into surveillance cameras and guide Hope to freedom over the course of the five-part campaign."

I just learned this was a mobile (i-phone) game first, and then it went to PC, and now it's coming to PS4. From what I heard, it's going to retail for $25, so it's a budget title.

Here's a Gamespot review of one of the episodes, if you're curious.

http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/republique-review/1900-6416041/

Personally, I tuned out after reading how heavy on the stealth it is, and also the fact that its origin was mobile phone. In addition, the story revolves around the old dystopian paranoia thing, and that's boring to me.

Still, it might be worth checking out if you're really hungry for a budget stealth title.

It's rare to see someone start a thread on a game they seem to dislike on so many levels.

Kudos to your selfless nature.

Andy makes some of the best posts here for new threads. It's always about gaming, always has detail, video, pictures and personal opinions of the game. That is what gaming forums are all about.

I give Andy kudos for that.

lol, I thought the game looked interesting, so I put up a thread. Then I did a little more reading and discovered the game isn't to my liking. I thought about deleting the thread, but I figured I'd keep it up, in case anyone else might be interested.

For real. I have no idea what i would do without Andy. He makes this place so much easier to enjoy. Always a random thread or game i've never heard of until he brings it to my attention. I love you Andy!

And i haven't heard of Republique. An iPhone game coming to consoles huh? I don't know about paying $25 but it looks interesting to say the least. If it's got an easy platinum trophy i might stumble upon it one day, lol.

Mount & Blade: Warband

I'd never heard of this game. It is described as "a unique blend of intense strategic fighting, real time army command, and deep kingdom management." It was released on PC in 2010. It's coming to consoles in Q2, so within the next 3 months (unless it gets delayed).

"TaleWorlds Entertainment and Koch Media has announced that the highly praised Sandbox-RPG Mount & Blade: Warband will make its debut on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in Q2 2016."

"Mount & Blade: Warband is the sequel of the original game that brought medieval battlefields to sandbox-life with its realistic mounted combat and detailed fighting system."

Not much of a looker there. I get the feeling if there is video available it may offer some unintended comedic action sequences. I think I am going to stick to visiting Tamriel for my medieval fix.

Subnautica

Underwater survival/adventure game.

You crash on an alien planet that is covered with water. You craft gear. You scrounge for food. You try to find your way out.

"User reviews so far are extremely positive, with a 92% recommendation rate on over 11.5K reviews. Now, though, it’s time for Subnautica to test new waters on console: Founder Charlie Cleveland confirmed that the game will debut on Xbox One’s Game Preview program on April 1st.

"PlayStation 4 gamers will have to wait since there’s no such program for their platform yet, but the developers at Unknown Worlds are counting on a full launch on Sony’s console once they get to version 1.0.

KOI

KOI, upcoming indie, this spring. First title from Chinese developers on the PS4.

http://www.playstationlifestyle.net...ese-developed-ps4-game-to-launch-in-the-west/

"KOI will be the first-ever Chinese developed game to be published in the west for the PS4. The adventure game has already won numerous indie awards and will be making its debut at GDC Play, which marks the first time the game can be glimpsed on a PS4."

The GDC previewer below describes it as "sort of like Journey with fish." That's probably an overstatement, but it does seem to be a calm, tranquil game.

"KOI is a difficult game to describe as it really is intended to be played first hand in an almost trance like state. Most of it concerns gently navigating the little koi around to bloom flowers as tranquil music plays in the background. There’s not a whole lot to do and it’s an experience that will only last a few hours, but still looks to accomplish its goal of simply relaxing players and letting them zone out from any stresses facing them in life. Even playing the game on the busy showfloor of GDC, my mind quickly gave way to its calming charm as I metamorphosed into a cute little orange fish."

"KOI will be released exclusively for PS4 via PSN this spring."

"While most of the pond is gentle, there are also elements of danger like raging currents, deadly predators and spiky barriers. This is all accomplished through beautifully minimalist visuals that enhance its tranquility, with the highlight being the night level that reflects the starry sky on the water and makes you feel as if you’re in outer space."

Looks kind of cool. Nice music.

Here's a good one. Want to go into Uncharted with lowered expectations? Why not try...

Adam's Venture: Origins
Set in the roaring 20’s, you’ll explore ancient ruins and recover mysterious artifacts. Together with your trusted accomplice Evelyn you will have to outsmart the evil Clairvaux company.

maxresdefault.jpg

Adam's Venture: Origins is a collection of the first three episodes of Adam's Venture, which were released about 5 years ago on the PC (2009, 2011, 2012). The developer is Dutch. The first three episodes were gathered under the title of "Chronicles" for the PS3 in 2015. That was a rousing success, with a metacritic average of 49.

The upcoming "Origins" (on X1, PS4, and PC) is a "remake" or a "remaster," so (according to the trailer below, anyhow), we will see improved graphics, gameplay and puzzles.

Release date: April 1st.

Subnautica looks like something I'd be in to. As for the others, you're right; don't care.

I personally don't understand the lack of hype for Adam's Venture. People get all excited about Uncharted, so where's the buzz for Adam's Venture? It's pretty much the same, only not quite so good. People are fickle.

Subnautica looks really cool. Reminds me of an old PS1 game Treasures of the Deep.

Not being serious here are you? There is something...umm, err...effeminate about Adam's Venture. Trying to be PC here so I'll just say it doesn't appear to be barking up my tree. I'll let someone else take the dive before I consider.

I've had my eye on this game for what seems like forever. Out now on Steam for less than $12. Out on everything else, soon I guess?

ADR1FT just launched as Oculus Rift launch title, but it can be played on a normal screen as well. It's basically Gravity: The Game, but it looks really good.

No, I wasn't being serious. Goofing. It got a metacritic of 49.

Although I do think it's the kind of game I might play, if it's cheap enough and I'm bored enough. I occasionally like experimenting with games like that. Sometimes, the badness is goodness.

I didn't notice anything particularly effeminate about Adam's Venture, but I think you're more sensitized to effiminacy than I am, which I assume is repressed homosexuality on your part. I did notice the Christian themes (reviews commented on that).

Dno69 - that looks bloody/gorey fun, but I'm a bit toasted on 2-D platformers, and the heavy metal soundtrack would make my brain hurt.

team56th - Yeah, Adrift looks really good. I would get it on VR if possible, although it's not possible for me. I would also get it on Xbox One if possible, but that is not possible either. I guess I'll just have to deal with it. (That's a crack about the developer, who is the "deal with it" guy).
