Andy's Thread of Obscure Games No One Cares About

Nothing comes to mind, no.
No worries.

I tried skimming some 2014-2015 indie montage YT vids hoping I could catch it, nothing. You never know, maybe it's already out. Oh well, maybe it'll pop up one day.

There was an indie game that had a cool trailer. Sci-fi/post apocolyptic-ish. Kind of resembled The Fall or The Swapper, but it's neither of those. The trailer probably came out in 2014.... I forget.

You guys know which game it could be?

Ghost Song?

Here is one I preordered on a whim (14 bucks) on the Xbox store. Looked neat, but I'm not sure if this came out for PC alread or not. It comes out on the 9th

Here's one to avoid.

I played it all the way through and regret it. Most of the game involves walking back and forth through same-looking corridors, searching for 4 or this or 5 of that, occasionally dealing with passwords or data cards. There are moderately interesting character interactions that follow each gameplay sequence, and those kept me going. Based on the game subtitle, I was assuming the relationships might deepen and go somewhere interesting, but they never did. I kept playing all the way to the unsatisfying conclusion, hoping that there would be some kind of payoff for tolerating all the dull gameplay, but there wasn't. Bleh. Waste of time.

I may have overlooked but 2 games that came out the past couple weeks are getting good reviews (79-80):

Hue(X1, PS4): Puzzle/platformer with shades of Limbo minus the frustration.

The Turing Test (X1): Think Portal type puzzler without the humor. Manipulate machinery to get to the secrets.

The Turing Test trailer had me interested, but if it's just manipulating machinery to solve puzzles ... nah ... sounds like a game designed by engineers for engineers. I ain't no engineer. That's my brother.

I am also getting tired of games where you are the only living, breathing person around, and all you interact with is artifacts, machinery, projected images, or whatnot. It's an isolative sort of gaming experience. I guess it's easier to build a game that way, though, and that's why we're getting so many of them.

I feel the exact same way. Talos Principle, The Witness, Everyone's Gone to the Rapture, Gone Home, and Pnuema are a few that come to mind that have no human interaction that I have played lately. No doubt may be part of why I enjoyed Oxenfree so much with it's dialog and characters and also why I'm looking forward to Sea of Thieves.

Going to get The Turning Test at some point. I have no clue what the hell it is, but i know it's an easy 1,000 points so why not. I think that's why developers make these games. Who in their right mind wants to play half of them if not for the easy virtual trinkets. I wouldn't.

The Turing Test TD, not Turning. It's an actual thing developed by a guy named Alan Turing as a method to test a robot/machine's ability to mimic human behavior. Interesting stuff if you are into science.

Right, the test of how good AI is. Can you tell whether you're talking (via text) to a computer or a person?

You would play a game you're not interested in, just for the trophies or achievement points?

I did that once (but just once), with a game called Avatar. I rented it. I got 1000 points for 5 minutes of effort. I felt like an idiot afterwards, lol. Woohoo, 1000 points, I'm a big man now. Ladies love me.

I did the same with that game. I don't usually do things like this just to get achievements, but I will surely play a game for longer than I want to to get achievements. Though, not so much anymore since I'm just interested in getting through my backlog.

That's funny. I did the same thing, rented Avatar back when cheevos mattered. Afterwards I regretted it so much I looked for ways for that game not to show on my played list.

And now I honestly am not even sure what my gamerscore is anymore. Maybe around 70,000 but that's just a guess.

When I first got 360, I did some achievement tasks for the sake of it. EA NHL games had ones like create a player or create a goalie and get 50 pts. I also purposely checked up Gamefaqs to see where all 30 CoD 4 intels were.

I think that was the last time I purposely strived for something to get pts.

Yeah, lol. Got to have the sensation of those achievements popping from time to time. I'm doing much better than last gen, mostly sticking to good games. It helps that Microsoft raised the threshold for how many points a game can have or whatever. It used to be 200-400 points for the really short indies games and what not. Now devs can add up to 1,000 for those games. So whenever my OCD kicks in and i need a few easy points, there's a lot more games to choose from.

Funny story, i bought Hannah Montana for the 360 back in the day for a quick 1,000. I ordered it through Amazon, i wasn't going to be caught dead with it in a GameStop, obviously. So got the points, then traded it to a friend who also loves achievements. He got the 1,000 and went to work the next day and his buddies were like.. did i see you playing what i thought i saw you playing last night? Come on man.

Wait, can we get nostalgic about old games no one cared about.? Because...Actraiser! God I loved that game.

Impressions please! Supposed to be short, but the style and theme are so cool I definitely think I need it at some point.

I only played about 10-15 minutes as I was messing around on PS4, looking to see differences in the HDR mode, lol.

Impressions: The music is beautiful (reminds me a bit of Ori- though nothing is on THAT level, tbh). I really like Norse/Celtic/Viking Theme. It's subtitled but spoken is in that awesome Viking language (is my ignorance showing yet!!!???), so it has an authentic feel. Unusual but very welcome.

It's 3/4 view, and the artwork is very nice (though no Ori) with good hand drawn animation that doesn't feel framey. Controls are tight, and though the only think I have fought are tenticles so far, the mechanics are fun, with a regular swing, a very slow and powerful overhead swing, and a roll. The important thing to note is that it seems like you don't have to get into situations where you have to exchange damage while fighting. You can dodge, and it telegraphs where the attack will be.

I've also encountered some kind of poison plant, but there are "healing" plants that remove the poison scattered around as well. getting through the area requires timing and route planning. It's nice that they added this mechanic to make normal traversal more entertaining.

Well done so far, but it's early, and the music makes me want the OST. The atmosphere and tone is not a common one, so that's a plus too. VIKINGS! At this point it's a recommend!

How the heck did this one slip under the radar??? One of the best game trailers of 2016 (watch the whole thing):

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

So this came out in July for PS4 and X1 (and Steam) priced at $9.99. It has actually received some good reviews (Polygon-90, Gamespot-80) and looks to be a great couch game for friends, especially those who aren't heavy gamers. Simple to learn, complex to master is what everyone is saying about it. Color me intrigued...has anyone actually bought it?
