Anyone have experience dealing with your ISP when way over limit?

Got a notice from my ISP that I was going over my household data limit of 250GB for the month. Which in all honesty I didn't even realize I had a cap as its never been an issue before. Thing is I just upgraded my PS4 to a 2TB HDD and by the time I re-download all my games plus the 4 or 5 I picked up in the Black Friday sale I'm going to be at least 1TB over limit.
Obviously with charges of 10 dollars for every extra 50GB past my limit this could get rather pricey.
Should I maybe fib a little and say my old HDD failed and I had to re-download everything; and hope they take mercy on me?

I've gone over a few times but not by much. When they contacted me I told them id be leaving and going to a different provider with a better plan if they went and charged me. We have fairly strict regulations over here about data charges though. When you get close they are meant to warm you but they never do.

I do that with everything. Sky equipment breaks and Sky says it is out warranty....f*** you, I am leaving....few days later receive new set top Box and/or dish. You're late with payment so we must cut you off...f*** you, I am leaving and not paying...sky is switched back on an hour later.

Customer power FTW!

Do you have a viable alternative to switch to? If so, call them up and threaten to cancel all their service.

Another option is just not re-download everything all at once? Can't possibly play all those games.

Usually in cases like this it ends in something like 25 to life. We'll see how this pans out.

Where do you live?

I'm in Ontario, Canada and there is a law that your ISP can't charge you more than $100 for going over your limit, no matter how much you go over. So you could d/l 10TB they can't charge you more than $100 extra.

It's funny to think MS wanted to go all digital d/l, like everyone has unlimited bandwidth. Game files are huge now. I get "unlimited" 300GB and so far this gen I have gotten pretty close a couple of times.

The difference is the UK is a lot more consumer friendly from what I've heard. The US is all about protecting giant corporations and f***ing over customers.

MS didn't want everyone to download all the games. You would have installed your game from the disk as normal. You just had to check in once a day to make sure you never sold your game and was continuing to play it.
It's actually worse now because if you want the benefits of digital like not having to change disks, game sharing with a friend you have to actually download it and can't resell it, the original policy was the best of both worlds.

I was all digital until crapcast started the data cap. Now going back to disk. Crap cast will not be getting more money from me. We need the big corporations like Microsoft and Netflix to get behind the consumer on these issues and put these money hungry ISP's in their place.

Yeah, the problem (at least in the US) is that these companies have monopoly power in a lot of areas. I have no other choice for internet service other than Time Warner. What would I do if they started putting policies in place that I don't like?

A 250gb data cap seemed fine 4-5 years ago but now? That's something someone could hit easily with a big black friday sales splurge.

Is impossible for me to say. I have no clue how it is for US consumers. What I can say is that it isn't exactly a picnic for UK consumers either.

I have a whopping 10GB of data per month to work with. Deciding which broken pos game to needlessly update provides more fun than the game itself most of the time.

10GB, is that all. I am surprised anybody could survive on that nowadays. Especially a gamer.

10GB!! Just playing online would break that within a month. Especially if it's a shooter game.

I'm sure there's a lot of people out there who can't financially justify the "unlimited" package from their ISP (which as discussed in this thread isn't unlimited, it requires an asteriks)

The amount of data required this gen just to patch a game is of concern for some people.

A bit of a disconnect between the content providers and the bandwidth holders for sure. Cable companies are a******s seems to be the consensus here though.

I've never heard of this before. Which is surprising since i have Comcast and they always find a way to overcharge and screw people. $100 a month for the whole package, cable, phone, internet, and then it's $200 a month after the first year or whatever. Wow, what a deal. Can we get money back every time the service goes out for a couple hours? Scumbags.

The other problem with data caps is that the ISPs (many of which who also offer TV) realized that people were using their bandwidth to download TV legally and cancelling their bloated cable TV service. So, enter bandwidth caps. They limit what you can download so that you're forced to stream much less and buy more from them.

Write your local congressperson, however the TWCs and Comcasts of the world all fund their campaigns, so guess who they are going to listen to?

When people have a 10GB cap? That's ludicrous. Whoever offers that service should be ashamed. That will barely cover your basic Windows patches. I'm pretty sure I hit over 100gb this weekend from black friday download sales.

You just have to deal with it in this area. $60 per month for 10GB of data. My X1 rarely gets updated at all with the massive updates it sometimes requires.

It's satellite internet, so pings are 1500ms or more.

Anyway, I wasn't trying to derail this thread with my pitiful online issues. I just find it insane how anyone can go through 250GB of data per month...not just mentioned here, but various internet forums talking about it.

Most packages over here are unlimited now and usually that means about 500gigs if you read the fine print. Price isn't an issue. Availability is though. I would agree with the data cost of games this generation though. 60 gig patches aren't uncommon. I used to have a 20 gig limit before I got my X1. I can't even imagine trying to play online with that now.

Forget I made this thread. Anyway I called and got super lucky that I got a really nice lady who took my call. She credited me the full amount that I was going to be charged for going over limit and I upgraded to unlimited data for an extra 10 dollars a month. Im happy with that.
