Ashen

Just finished Hellblade. Now I can focus on this!

Going from Dark Souls to Ashen is kind of like going from Forza Motorsport to Forza Horizon (race comparisons only). A lot more forgiving. Less daunting. Easier to pick up and play. It’s a simplified and streamlined version of Dark Souls which means it will appeal to many who don’t like that franchise and will disappoint many Dark Souls fanatics.

I’m a Dark Souls 1 snob and I like Ashen. So far it feels like a 8.0 game. I have to stop comparing it as I feel like that actually takes away from the experience. It’s a solid game with a unique art style all its own.

Can you invite a friend to co-op?

One thing I like about Ashen that’s not in Soulsbourne is the jump/climb button. Makes it more interesting to explore.

I can’t keep the computer AI with me though. I go at it alone 75% of the time. Probably my #1 complaint. When with me, the AI seems decent. Won’t follow me into some environments.

Guess it’s coming to the MS Store, when it’s ready

Happy launch weekend! We hope everyone is enjoying the world we’ve created in Ashen. It has been a labor of love, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the reception we are getting from players and critics alike after releasing live at The Game Awards last night.

As many of you are aware, some members of our community have questions about the launch strategy and initial platform availability for Ashen, which we would like to discuss before boarding the long flight back to New Zealand.

Let's begin with the Windows 10 availability in the Microsoft Store. The Xbox One launch of Ashen could not have been a better success story, in our opinion, and Microsoft has been unbelievably supportive throughout the development of Ashen. We are currently working with our partners at Microsoft and the ID@Xbox team on bringing Ashen to the Microsoft Store on Windows 10 as soon as possible. We wholeheartedly agree that this would have been better available day one. We are a small studio that just shipped a very big game, but have been actively working to get it there. Rest assured, it is coming.

Launching on the Epic Games Store is a unique opportunity that does not come around for an indie title like ours very often. Our publisher, Annapurna Interactive, approached us with a unique opportunity from Epic Games to make Ashen a hallmark title for their store’s launch. As a developer we want as many players as possible to have the opportunity to play Ashen. A big part of that is having Ashen featured in a place that isn't crowded and at an exciting time when a great new platform, one that genuinely wants to do the best for developers and players alike, first launches. The promotion we are and will be receiving from our partners at Epic is tremendous. It is incredibly rare to have an opportunity like this, and we are honored and proud to have earned this opportunity. This was not a decision that was made lightly.

Epic Games have been with us from the very start, with us having received a huge amount of support from their Unreal team in addition to a development grant when we were first starting. Ashen would not have existed had they not believed in us from the beginning. We have so much heartfelt gratitude for the helping hand they have shown, and we are honored to be a premier launch title on a platform that is so important to them.

Right now you can play Ashen on all the hardware we have promised since day one. We know that is not enough for everyone. We will be coming to other platforms in the future. If you must wait for those, we totally understand. We are super proud of the game and hope you will enjoy it whenever and wherever you play it.

Thank you for supporting us, and please continue to follow us here for all the latest updates.

Sincerely,

Derek Bradley
Game Director

Its meant there to be all the time but I've noticed the same thing. I think what happens is your AI compnion is actually a human player and they don't quite follow you. It then needs to reload your companion to an AI. It's happened to me a few times.

That might explain why my AI is long gone at times. And at other times I find him kicking ass and taking my kills.

Yeah. As I hear it, your companion can change from AI to human seamlessly. So that might be why it appears to be or act one way, then another. There isn't a notification that tells you when this happens though.

I've been switching off Multiplayer when I am exploring. This means you are always with an NPC companion and they'll follow you everywhere. Then when you get to a boss, switch multplayer back on again and wait a minute or two and you'll get a human player. You can tell the difference between the NPC & Human because the NPC will always look like the default character and the human player will have customization visible.

That's pretty cool that it's hard to tell.

The concept is great. It’s something completely new in terms of multiplayer. In operation though it doesn’t work so well because every player is the main character in their game and while the game tries to match you with other doing the same objectives that’s doesn’t mean either player is actually doing that objective. Quite often a player will join my game as the NPC and ignore my requests and go off on their own.

So pretty much like any other online coop game.

My experience has been pretty much the opposite. Most of the players I’ve run across have stayed close and worked the same quests.

It was like that at the start but I once I got to the second or third map region more often than that I was finding it hard to get one that stuck close by.

It worked out really well for me all the way through. Now I’m right at the end boss and I’m having some trouble getting matched up.

I think I’m near the end just looking at the map. I finished that canyon with all the bandits in it using the explosive spears. I really hate those things.

So what type of game is this? Any good?

I started it earlier and played like 2 hours. Not really seeing what folk are raving about. Combat was simple and rather dull. Got an A. I companion that doesh't seem needed. Enemies were easy to beat. The first boss was a let down.

People compare it to dark souls, but from what I played it is more like Fable without the humour.

Finished it the other night. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great game.

Just found out that ashen was made by a little studio in New Zealand. The games industry is nearly non existent here compared to the film/music industry so hopefully this gets people talking and gives the industry a boost.
