Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Black Flag was a lot of fun, it's worth playing for sure.
Do you get the feeling that Skull and Bones is just Black Flag lite?

Black Flag is my second favourite AssCreed, after Syndicate.

I thought removing the grapple from the game would be counter-intuitive to the gameplay, but the level design is so good in Origins, that you don't miss it.

Origins removed the restrictions on what can be climbed so the grapple ended up not being needed as much. Syndicate was a great game too so it's nice to know the same team that made that is making Odyssey.

Skull and Bones does seem a bit like Black Flag MP edition but that's fine, I think a lot of people requested they add MP to the naval combat in AC at the time. I'm just glad we have naval combat in Odyssey that's part of the main story and accessible at all times vs how it was done in Origins.

AC3 has the best combat gameplay in the whole series imo, they dumbed it down in 4 and imo origins combat isn't great (except bows). 3 is pretty good overall but main character is meh, haytham is great though. You could just play some YouTube recaps tbh, I would say it's good to have knowledge of the original trilogy's story arc going forward.

To me I think this games biggest problem is it releases so soon after Origins. Not only because of franchise fatigue, but the gameplay and especially graphics/setting in Origins were so good that just going off videos it could arguable be the better game despite releasing a year earlier.

I don't know, Origins looks great but this one looks quite a bit better to me because it's got more color. It also has free form naval combat which was missing in Origins.

Yeah I get that, it is way more vibrant. This will sound dumb but I’ll actually miss all the swampland from Origins. Loved exploring on those little boats.

I can definitely see me having a little series fatigue just like with Far Cry. The Ancient Greece setting is looking really fun though (I am really enjoying Origin's setting as well).

Yeah, the scenery looks a lot more interesting than Origins did. More color/vibrancy. I hope it looks good in HDR. Hard to tell from what I've seen.

I haven't played an AC game since AC 2, so I don't have the series fatigue other people are talking about.

Oct. 5th is release date, so that's like 3 months. A bit less.

Like Kerosene said, the ancient Greek setting looks fun.

I always buy AC games and ended up never actually playing them. Lol. At least not to the extent that I should.
Having said that, this looks good.

I really like the series, so I know it'll be a game guaranteed worth buying with each release. I'm really stingy with money now, so I usually only buy games I know that I'll like.

Nothing wrong with more Creed and i like the Greece setting. Seems like giving the series a break a couple years ago has helped a bit.

I really feel like the Greece/Rome thing is overplayed. How about other ancient civilizations like in China? At least, aesthetically, it would change things up. Maybe the Mayans or Aztecs? At least there is an alien conspiracy linking the different pyramids/ziggurats... it would mean different weapons and cultures at least ...

They already did that, but too bad it's in 2.5D and wasn't very good. I'd love to see a real AC game set in China.

Excerpts from an interview....

Q: What made you decide that ancient Greece would be the game’s setting? Was that always the plan, or were there any other settings that you considered as well? If yes, can you tell us what those potential settings were?

A: When we started looking at Greece, we started researching, ‘What’s interesting about Greece, what’s the best time to set it up?’ It’s a super varied, super beautiful location.

We have eight different biomes. From lava volcanoes, to mountain peaks with snow, to the undersea, to the island we have at E3. So, there’s variety in the visuals, and then it’s also a time of war. So, we have [representation of] war as well as the development of science, and art, and writing, storytelling. It was just full of things for us to dig into.

Q: The game will feature Xbox One X specific enhancements. What can players expect if they are playing the game on Xbox One X? Is 4K/60fps on the cards?

A: I honestly don’t know the answer to that.

Q: And how will the PS4 Pro version turn out in terms of resolution and frame rate?

A: I played it at home just three weeks ago and it’s super, super gorgeous. We’ve been getting feedback that this is the prettiest Assassin’s Creed ever. And I agree with them, the game is gorgeous.

Q: Quest variety has often been one of the things in Assassin’s Creed that people complain about the most. Is Odyssey going to make conscious, concerted efforts to improve in that area?

A: I think we have made huge improvements on that by focusing on choice, by giving players choice, by giving players options, and how they complete quests, how they interact with quest givers, how they role-play with the characters. Because for the first time ever you’ll be choosing who you play as. It is a very different experience and it’s much more interactive and dynamic in both the world and the characters in the story. So, gameplay will reflect that as well.

Q: Origins was a pretty major departure from the Assassin’s Creed formula in a number of ways, most prominent of them being its completely revamped combat system. Is Odyssey going to make any additional changes to the combat?

A: Yes. We’ve made improvements across the core that Origins built, as well as bringing in special abilities. There are around 30 new abilities on your controller. So, each player is going to have their own style, and controls and really be able to use their own play-style out of those abilities. Then you’ve got multiple different weapons and gear categories as well. The combat on the players side is very improved. Then on the NPC side we’ve had to make them stronger and more interesting and more varied enemies in order to challenge the player across those 50 levels of progression.

No console on the market today is going to do a game that looks like this at 4K/60FPS and it was stupid for them to ask, hell I doubt it'll be native 4K on the One X, probably either CB or dynamic res, either way it's going to look amazing though.

Heh, I just got banned at Resetera. There was a thread based on a video that said the game had "an Alexios issue." The main point of the video was that the marketing featured Alexios more than Kasandra. That was a real problem, apparently, because it was sexist and did not encourage people enough to see women in these roles (as if that's Ubisoft's job).

I wrote that it was silly to demand equivalent outcomes in marketing. Most of the game's buyers will be men, and that most of them will want to play as men. Stats certainly bear that out. I said that the idea of a female Spartan who could kick ass against an army of physically stronger male warriors was kind of a fantasy, but it was a nice option for people who wanted to play as a woman. I said the idea that Ubisoft should feature them equally in marketing is demanding that Ubisoft lose money in order to accommodate social justice sensitivities.

Apparently that was over the line. I got banned for "misogynistic commentary," lol.

The main point of the video seems to be that only Kassandra should exist because she is canon but that is hardly a good reason if they want to give players more choices in the game. I certainly agree that there is nothing wrong with marketing the character they think is more marketable. I doubt they would lose money either way though. There will be whining on the internet regardless of which character they market more but the vast majority won't care either way.

I had the sense that might be the case -- that they were saying Ubisoft should have eliminated the male character entirely and forced players to play as female. I didn't comment on that in particular, because I didn't watch the whole video so I wasn't clear on that. My commentary would've been even more politically incorrect (and my ban longer), if I knew that.

It's a stupid and arrogant position to take -- the idea that by eliminating the male choice and forcing players to play as a female, you are educating gamers about how women can also be Spartan warriors. Forget historical accuracy and the fact that men probably made up 99% of those armies, and they still make up the vast majority of people fighting and dying on the front lines. Gotta advance the "progressive" agenda. pfft.

Imagine the reaction if someone suggested the opposite, btw -- that the female character be eliminated, and that only the male option remain. A thread like that would be locked and the OP banned in about 10 seconds.

It would be different if the game were designed from the start to be about a woman. If that were the case, fine. But that's not what the game is or ever was. It would also be somewhat different if the game weren't something like AC, which values historical accuracy.

The female character was actually featured in most of the initial reveal material. I remember thinking to myself, "Is there an option to play as a guy?"

I do think that they would've lost money, had they put the woman front and center in marketing, though. A lot of guys find playing as a male Spartan more identifiable and realistic than playing as a woman, and that would've been reflected in the response to marketing.

Playing as a girl is an option or is it key to knowing the whole story?

It's just an option. I've heard interactions play out somewhat differently, which I guess is to be expected, given the gender difference. They may have different backstories, too.

I'm glad they gave us the choice, while I don't mind playing as a female character if the game is right for it I also don't feel some sense of pride about it either and playing as a woman sure as hell doesn't make a game any better. Hell in AC Origins I found the female character we played as from time to time to be far less likeable than Bayek, he was great.

Player choice and RPG mechanics. Sounds good on paper. We'll have to see how it pans out.

I'm going to have to play the hell out of this and get it finished before RDR2 comes out lol, I'll probably be on a 2nd play through of Spider-Man or finishing up Yakuza Kiwami 2 when this launches.

Honestly that looks basically like Origins with a few enhancements. My e3 hype is starting to wear down. I'm barely halfway through Origins right now. I may cancel my preorder for now. I'm sure I'll circle back to it, but this fall is pretty packed. I'm not even sure I'll get Origins done in time. I don't have series fatigue quite yet, but I'm guessing the grind to get this done will give it to me.

Looks good. I didn't play Black Flag, so the naval combat is new to me.

Interesting way to recruit people. "Hey, sorry about sneaking up on you and choking you into unconsciousness. I'd like you to join my crew."

I was surprised they dropped the shield, but now it makes sense.

Hard to say how it'll feel. It sounds/looks good, but AC combat has never been interesting to me (then again, the last AC I played was #2, so I'm sure it's come a long ways since then).
