Assassin's Creed Odyssey

I'm kind of jealous of the people who are super into AC's new direction. I miss the past games' focus on social stealth, crowds and assassinations. I played origins & am not really a big fan of the direction they've gone. To me, they took the series in the opposite direction of everything I thought made the franchise unique.

I liked the way the older games played more as well, but I also like the way the series is going now. I don't care either way. This is probably the only game series that I've liked nearly all of them that's been released.

Ugh, I'm still at 80% completion on SotTR trying to finish it before opening this game.

I liked the old way and the new way, I think the combat is much more fun now than it was in the older games and they have the traversal down better. Being that there were so many quality titles with the older style it's hard to complain IMO. I also love that they added things over time naval combat and made the world not only bigger but added far more areas to explore. Playing this just really makes me want them to do a reskinned version of this world in a Viking setting, they could turn those big battles into raids, use the same style of ship combat and maybe add some other types of whales (Orcas, Humpbacks and Narwhals) They would need to change the architecture, the statues and many of the tree types but I think it would work really well.

For me AC: Brotherhood was the peak. Revelations felt very "more of the same" with Brotherhood, with bomb crafting being the biggest edition but not something I found particularly interesting. I really did not care for unity at all, did not get very far into that one before giving up on it. I detested the combat in that one. I don't know if I finished syndicate either, but I may have, played it more than Unity thats for sure. I played and beat origins, it was ok, but they abandoned so much of what I used to identify AC with that I was kind of left in a weird place with it.

Origins to me felt really grindy and the later levels took an absurdly long time. I felt the world was way bigger than it had any reason to be, especially considering the story didn't utilize much of the map and so there were literally entire regions that we next to meaningless. As for the combat, I guess it's sort of an improvement, but I could take or leave it and I feel like the navigational/ parkour aspect has been simplified so much that it's not even interesting anymore...

I’m one of the weirdos that didn’t like AC2. The highs of the series for me are:

AC1
Brotherhood
Black Flag
Origins
Odyssey

Edit: Also someone at Ubi needs smacked for there still not being a feudal Japan AC lol

I remember the director of AC3 & Far Cry 4 said that feudal Japan, Egypt & WWII, the locations fans request most, were "boring". I'd agree with him on WWII, not the rest. I wanted feudal Japan for a long time as well, but now with Ghost of Tsushima coming from Sucker Punch, I think I'll get my fix, and I like the look of the gameplay I've seen of that more than what I imagine Ubi doing with an AC set there. I definitely don't feel like AC's current gameplay style would jive as well with a Japan setting.

That was exactly my thought!! When I saw Ghosts get revealed my first reaction is Ubi done messed up, the first good game in that setting is going to do very well, not so sure about the second game.

Meh japoonese AC.
Give me viking age, Russian revolution, China or India instead.

For the most part I prefer the Far Cry games to be modern day settings, but if they were to do another time period as they did with Primal, I was thinking a Viking themed Far Cry could be cool. I would probably be back on board with AC if they went to india, I know that is where the former main writer wanted to go with it. That could be really cool...

Viking theme would prob be a better fit for far cry considering lack of cities for parkour.

I think Vikings would fit perfectly for the AC type of game we have now. Third person, travel on ships, going into villages and taking over, focus on melee weapons and bow's etc. Far Cry is great for what it is but I still think a Viking game would be better in 3rd person, as it is I wish FC5 had a 3rd person option.

There are a few nitpicks I have with this game, nothing big but things that I hope are done better in the future.

1) They need to start adding facial animations during combat and improve the facial animations during cut scenes.
2) Better looking rain, the rain in black flag looked better. It needs to allow light to pass through it and not just be plain white lines.
3) Figure out a way to get rid of those banding lines in the clouds and make the clouds overall higher res, they can be a bit grainy
4) Better voice acting, Origins had a great voice cast but they sound pretty cartoony in this game.
5) More variety in the NPC character models, have seen a lot of people who are part of different missions that look exactly the same
6) Let you send your tamed animal after other animals or human targets, just target them like you would with the bow.
7) Allow you to tame marine animals
8 Allow us to turn off the visual effects that follow weapons like the red lines that follow spears or the glow when you are invisible, it ruins pictures.
9) I love that they actually have waves that make it all the way to the shore in this game I just wish they figured out a way to make the foam look better
10) Allow decapitations, dismemberment and exit wounds when stabbing through someone.

See, a facial expression here would make the pic so much better lol.

Good points.
It's strange, I remember they made a big deal about how good the storms looked in black flag and it really seems that they look much more plain here (although it was awhile since I played black flag).
The glow from weapons really bothered me in the first fights, I haven't thought of it since though.... could've swore they disappeared after the "tutorial", but I'm sure I'm wrong here.
Decapitations would've been awesome, at this point in the series it would feel very out of character though.

Even if not decapitations I think at least some kind of open wound, I guess if photo mode wasn't a big thing now it wouldn't matter as much but a game about assassin's doesn't seem like the place to worry about trying to be PG :)

As far as the storms yeah the rain looked better in black flag for sure, the lightning effect may be a bit better here, the bolts in BF were pretty big and cartoony but it still looked really cool plus they had the water spouts. That brings me to something I forgot to mention which is a lot of games this gen don't seem to bother making the surfaces look wet when it rains, they barely even show splash from drops hitting the ground. Last gen it seemed most games that made weather a focus had water running down walls or at least made them look wet, most games this gen seem to skip that. I'm sure it's more of a resource management thing and trying to squeeze performance out of other areas but I'm a sucker for great all around weather effects and I hope next gen that's something that gets more attention.

I think we have enough Japanese developers that can make better and more accurate Japanese environments and culture of time setting then western developers to need a Action game by A western dev. I

Less japoonese and more westerners, yes?

While I would love a 3rd person viking action game, I do not wish to ever see Far Cry go 3rd person in any respect. One of the things I've liked a lot about those games ever since FC2 is the 100% commitment to first person at all times, I'd like for FC to remain strictly a first person game personally. Third person would be better for a viking game though as I'd love to have tons of customization & such, I just don't like AC's new structure or design for the Viking game in my head, so would rather it not be an AC game...

That's cool, I can just picture the current map lay out with a Scandinavian facelift working well in a Viking game. With AC not being as "AC" as it used to be I think it would fit better now than it would have in the older games. Just make the end of the spear an Ax tied to Odin or Thor, take on other Viking groups, turn the large battles into raids etc.

As far as FC5 I don't see why a third person option would be a bad thing, at least when driving you should have a 3rd person option if nothing else.

I typed that quick when I was in a telco meeting, so I have no chance to check the poor wordings.

I meant to say there are enough Japanese Developers that know Japanese ancient culture & architecture to make games set in Japan. No need for Western Developers to make games set in ancient Japan.

Yeah, even with not being a fan of AC's combat now I'd still agree that it'd be a better fit than combat in the ACs of old. I just did not care for the combat system they came up with in Origins. Guess I cannot speak too much on Odyssey since I've not played it, but it didn't look vastly dissimilar. I think to do Viking combat justice, they'd need to do a lot of re-working of the combat system.

As for 3rd person in Far Cry, I dunno, I choose to oppose the idea. The game maintaining an adherence to first person is something I like, even when using vehicles. Not saying it's a bad idea, it's just one I've decided I don't have any desire for.

I am one of the weirdos that didn’t like Black Flag. My favorite AC is AC II but I liked Origins a lot but this one feels better. The combat feels more intuitive.

I am about 4.5 hours in and just got the title screen, lol. That might be the longest intro ever.

I think AC3 had a longer one, with that twist... prob the biggest twist in the series history... actually pretty great, best "villain" in AC history imo.

I didn't really care for it either, if only because I felt the focus on ship combat came at the detriment of on-foot combat. The on foot combat in Black Flag really added nothing new that AC3 didn't do, they just swapped out the tomahawk and knife for dual swords. Most of my interest in the AC games is for 2 core elements, the navigation/ parkour and the combat. In AC3 the boat sequences were a nice palette cleanser for when the rest of the game started to bog down, but I didn't like it enough for it to be the focus of an entire game, especially when coming at the cost of improving the melee fighting mechanics. Black Flag was the first AC I didn't actually buy day one, and Unity was the only other one I did, which I regretted and have not bought an AC since, only rented, Odyssey being the first where I've not even done that....

I’m 60 hours in and only been to about half the islands . The game is absolutely huge.
