Batman's cape is designed to hide his butt because... misogyny.

I agree that designers call attention to women's butts in games. That's a given. Where she becomes absurd is claiming that designers go to great lengths to hide men's butts. I find that absurd. She uses Batman as an example which is even more absurd. Then when she uses examples of games where the lead man isn't covered she uses her go go Gadget arm to say 'Well, they're not really calling attention to it because... Jeans.' Sarkeesian once again tries to make a point, and obvious one, but then goes into the absurd trying to support it.

Rebuttal

She has a really bad habit of raising very valid points and then does them no justice by providing ill-advised or contradictory or hypocritical counter examples or invents a straw man and effectively sabotages her own arguments by stretching to prove a position.

There is definitely exploitation and manipulation that goes on a lot when female characters are portrayed in games, from their physical design, attire or lack of it, to the way they are marketed. Hollywood is more than guilty of the very same things, but that also doesn't make it right.

Her arguments about the male character equivalents are all over the place, though, which is a shame.

Even so, it does not provide any excuse for the repulsive abuse she will no doubt receive for this latest video.

Doesn't batgirl have a cape too? Or aquaman have no cape?

Batgirl is being ironic.

It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a batarang

I bet she was offended by the movie they showed a close up of Bat Ass

Is that a zipper?

Not this again. What's wrong with curves in video games? I really don't get it.

I'm pretty sure I've got this now.

They want all female characters to be varying degrees of ugly in the face, with a beer belly, no make-up, flat chested, noassatall'd, walk like Robocop... Also, they should be stronger than the weakest characters in strength, ambiguous sexual orientation that leans closer to samey, they have to never need the help of male characters and should speak with an androgynous timber. They shouldn't dress sexy at all: jeans and a sweat shirt, with a baseball cap and no more than one bracelet so it's not suggestive of anything offensive.

To satisfy them all though, you can't even label the character a female. You never know, they could be rabbit-kin or even elfkin for all you know, you shouldn't create barriers to impose on how a person relates to their avatar.

Lemme know if I missed anything.

Your point is almost valid Yankee....

But he should be in a Speedo.

I'm sure most women fight in swimwear. :p

The complain is valid in many ways.

But there are some exceptions.

And you will see the female cosplayed by women long before the male character.

Women also love those games. People like to play as ideal forms when taking a break from reality. Who'da thunk? Was probably even designed by a woman. That dude definitely was. I wouldn't want to play as that character.

Personally, I don't like designs like that. Too overt. I like sexy, not slutty....

What's really funny is that those characters aren't really characters. Literally just objects you inhabit for your roleplay.

And neither of those characters are exactly sexy... I guess some people are into that thing, but both are meant to be bordering on grotesque :p

As a heterosexual male, Joe Manganiello Ryu is pretty hot. Not pre-ordering from Gamestop though so hopefully you can buy them later.

My lady perspective - I am a 51 year old married woman and I enjoy having young, sexy characters to play as. I enjoyed watching my male Commander Shepard's ass while playing Mass Effect and in Fantasy games I enjoy finding the most sexy outfit I can find for my female characters. It is fantasy. I don't want to run around in a game as a pudgy Lara Croft with sagging tits and fat ass or Sam Fisher with a beer belly.

I think some women in the real world have worn just as revealing, if not more revealing outfits than the top example shown, Victoria Secret ads, Music award shows - Miley Cyrus for an example.

I love this post. I agree 99.99%.

I think the issue with it all, is choice. Octavia Spencer's Emmy speech could almost be copied word for word into this topic.

Videogames are an idealized world, so why not make them all hot? Then lets sexualize the men too!

The images from fighting games posted of men in skimpy outfits were the exception, not the norm.

If 2/3 women in fighting games are world class gymnasts, and blade experts with double D tits, doing backflips in two pieces of duct tape, then why can't I play as a bloke with a 12inch wang wearing nothing but nipple clamps and a c***-sock?

Who wants to play as a saggy titted fat woman?

Who wants to play as a bloated balding middle aged man? None of us did. Until we played as Trevor in GTA V. He was f***ing awesome.

As Octavia said, its hard to win/be represented, if people don't write the roles for it.

(And as for the Miley comment, she was branded as "out of control" and a hot mess. Promotes #freethenipple and sexual equality, she's a train wreck. Borat does it, comedic moment in history.)

Freethenipples proves something about our society. The masses don't actually want equality. They want conformity. For the world to be restricted to their own limited views, beliefs, and comforts. We condemn sexist air conditioners, yet demand women cover their obscene bodies. Decry The Phantom Menace for " strongly racist characters and themes," and demand Muslims "get out of our country." Hates gays, but Hollywood lesbianism is okay. And so on and so forth.
