China Lifts Ban On Videogame Consoles

"It’s a big win for the Gaming industry as China has lifted its 15-year ban on video game consoles.

"As reported in the The Wall Street Journal China’s Ministry of Culture issued a statement that companies like Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and all others will now be allowed to manufacture and sell video game consoles anywhere in the country."

If I understand correctly, before this, Sony and MS were only allowed to sell within the boundaries of the Shanghai free trade zone. Now it's open to the whole country. I read Shanghai has about 1.7% of the Chinese population. So maybe, over time, this will pick up those lackluster Chinese console sales numbers.
 
Yeah they can now sell all over China which could be big for them.
 
Of course the ban is lifted.

The timing will coincide with numerous X1, PS4, Wii U knock offs which were perfected by fabricators during the ban.

On August 1, 2015 EXbox One, PS Fore and Wii Yew will launch with respective prices of $99, $129 and $79.
 
Now it's only a question of what genres or what games in general are allowed in China.
 
Weren't the consoles always made in China?

Happy that more people get a chance to game. Unless it means more RMT for online games! Grrr!!

In the free-trade zone, the consoles were not region locked, so that you could get around Ministry of Culture rules and play any games you wanted on them.

I wonder if the boxes sold to the wider Chinese population will also be region-unlocked.
 
Actually, 3 billions only cover India (which will overtake China within 10 years) & China. half of the world population is Chinese or Indian.
Asia has about 70% of the world population.

Other big Asia Countries include (from memory)
Japan- About 170million
Korea (80Million combined)
Indonesia (200million+), Indonesia is also the most populated Muslim country.
Thailand (60 million)
 
About time. Never understood how a country could be so stubborn about a hobby. I can see the PS4 really selling well in China.

But what kind of games will be allowed? That's a really big question. China will have to manufacture their own games to suit their stricter laws there. I don't know how strict they are, but I'd imagine they won't be playing Tomb Raider or Bloodborne any time soon.

Well they will be getting Halo: MCC. I think its mainly games that have China as the bad guys that are screwed.
