lately my computer had been having random boot on/off seizures, so i decided (after a quick google search) to give the fan and the thing behind it a quick clean. lo and behold, a dense layer of carpet fluff had formed on top of the metal slits. i scrubbed it off with tissue paper and the random restarts have stopped and the computer now runs about 5x quieter than before. success.

I bet your computer smells like burned dust. Congrats on being a PC caretaker. Everything always deserves some attention every now and then. Pays off way more than most realize.

i didnt realize, that's the thing. wouldn't surprise me at all if lots of people don't either. it's not like you open up your consoles/tvs/electronics for cleaning, so a pc wouldn't be viewed differently, probably

well, regular electronics generally don't have intake and outtake fans as they don't require them to run at acceptable temperatures. Add on that most people have their PC's running 24/7 for the most part, whereas stuff like blu ray players, consoles, tv's etc we turn off when we're not using them.

yes your PC needs a good cleaning once in a while.

imagine the room your PC lives in then imagine that you didn't clean that room for 5 years, that's what ends up inside there!

Though I have to be honest I only clean my PC when I make and upgrade or have to diagnose a problem and see all the dust on the fans etc. Turns out that' usually once or twice a year at the very least.

Been a while since I've cleaned mine but I'm lazy. Probably just wait until it gets a little warmer then take it outside and blow it out.
