Microsoft Exec: Crackdown 3 “Is All About Boom”, Insists That It Will Launch This Year

At the start of this year, Microsoft canceled the highly anticipated game, Scalebound, from Platinum Games. However, as we are going forward in this year Microsoft has revealed a little bit more about its game line-up for 2017. Crackdown 3 is part of the this year’s game line-up and it seems that it is coming along nicely.

Xbox users are wondering what to expect from the upcoming Crackdown 3 and according to general manager at Microsoft, Shanon Loftis, Crackdown 3 is “all about the boom”.

If you remember how great the original Crackdowns were, with the big open cities and as you level up your car and weapons also level up, imagine all of that times 10. Crackdown 3 is all about the boom. It is a massive futuristic city. You have smarter enemies, more vehicles and new weapons. The explosion and the destruction make it an incredible experience. Crackdown 3 is coming this year.

Previously, Shannon Loftis, said that the campaign for the game will be worth the wait, as it is the most fully features campaign done by the studio ever. She also explained that players actions will have huge consequences, and this is something that has been done for the first time.

Depending on what you choose to destroy in the environment, there will be massive, big reactions all over the city. Gangs will get together against you. This is the first time we’ve ever had something like that.

Crackdown 3 is an upcoming open world action-adventure in development at Reagent Games and will launch later this year for PC and Xbox One.

Does Crackdown use UE4? 'Cuz if it does, they should use this tech!

I actually think the game looks better in black and white in that video.

All that work, and I don't think the outcome is worth the effort. At all. And I freaking love Borderlands.

The stuff they did with the orb work (which looks better without their input) comes across as making something that is paint by numbers pretty, into an expensive piece of ugly...

Crackdown remains one of my top two most anticipated games this generation. The first was a nice take on the open world formula. I usually get bored quickly with open world games but the first did a great job combining different gameplay elements to make collecting and leveling up fun.

Next, there hasn't been a game all generation where I thought gameplay took a next gen leap in any area. Environments in most games are stale, static and don't react the way you'd expect based on how they look. Crackdown could change that forever. Games today still are using the Havok physics engine created for Half Life 2 over a decade ago. This could be the only significant leap in any gameplay element since. If Crackdown works, I'd expect and hope that elements of this cloud based physics engine to make it in future Halo, Gears and Forza Horizon games. Hopefully it's also something that MS makes optional to be used by 3rd party developers including games built on the PS4.

Yeah. Fuk Azure servers on PS4. Just sayin... lol

Anyway. Azure servers used for destruction in Gears, Halo and Forza would be super sick! Haters will probably discount the benefits though - claim Knack does destruction better.

Crackdown 3: Microsoft Details How the Cloud Enables a “Truly Massive Destructible World.”
Microsoft gives more details on how the Azure cloud will provide Crackdown 3 with more power for its physics.

During a panel at GDC 2017 in San Francisco, that DualShockers attended, Xbox Azure Gaming Proncipal PM Joseph Cusimano gave more information on how cloud compute will work in the upcoming Crackdown 3.

During the panel, a video was showcased comparing physics running on an azure cluster (you can see it in the picture below, on the left. Unfortunately filming was not permitted) and physics running on a local machine. Incidentally, the local machine is not an Xbox One, but a pretty high-end PC equipped with a GTX 980 TI, a powerful processor and lots of memory.

You’ll notice that on the left side, the buildings have an overlay with different colors. Each color represents an individual physics server spun-up on demand as the game plays. As destruction increases, the single local machine can’t keep up and frame rate drops, while the Azure cluster is able to distribute computations on multiple servers to cope with the additional processing power required.

Interestingly, the physics simulation is also done several frames in advance, and can cope with multiple possibilities. All the data gets returned to the game server, with with streams configured for each game client, enabling ” lot more physics capability of what we’ve seen in the past,” creating a “truly massive destructible world.”

Cusimano also added that with multiple players in the same world, the destruction goes beyond what a single machine can handle, which is why the setup with multiple servers that you can see above has been developed on the backside in order to support the game.

Crackdown 3 is coming this year for Xbox One and Windows 10, after having been delayed from its original 2016 launch window. it’s supposed to come before the Holiday season, but there is no specific release date yet.

What's a Gaming Proncipal?

980ti lol welcome to 2015. 1080ti would probably bump that up to a smooooth 12fps.

All i know is this game better happen. Crackdown 3 is the game that set me off on my rants about the power of the cloud 3 years ago. Besides Drivatars in Forza that promise hasn't really been realized. My reputation is on the line here Microsoft. Get it done.

If their cloud engine tech works like they've indicated, then they need to leverage it for something like MechAssault for full scale destruction.

And Titanfall and the Warzone in Halo... But y'know... :p

I don't think I'll be the biggest fan of this game, but I'd love to be suprised. I hated GTA when it went 3D, and it wasn't until I forced myself to finish GTA 5 that I learnt to love it.

I probably need to go back and make myself actually play the first two Crackdown's. I love the colour story/visual stylings. I gave up pretty quickly. (But that's a problem that I have with buying second hand games for $5. I have no fiscal pressure to finish the game, as well as getting sooo many Games With Gold. #firstworldproblemos)

I'd love it if they included a mini-game like Deathrow in the game, where the disc could smash through buildings/cars.

Looks like a different art style than previous Crackdown games. Looks like a different art style than even the reveal CG video and the few demos from a couple years back.

Still my most anticipated game on any console just for the fact it's trying to evolve gameplay.

Yeahhhh I know there wasn't much in that snippet I posted, but there hasn't been any new footage in a loooong time, so I figured it was something. Even though that's a super-early build, I like it.

The CD Twitter account keeps teasing something 'very soon' but if there is no Scorpio event prior to E3, I don't think we'll be seeing much prior to that.
Luckily it's really not *that* far away at this point.

Plus I scored a Switch so I'll be busy with Zelda til then.
F*ck yeah I did! And I didn't even have to get naked. So there's that.

I quite like how long the gun smoke hangs in the air...

Reminds me of doing my low light rifle training. Fire a few shots and you're pretty much blind because the smoke doesn't magically dissipate instantly.

Yeah. Pretty much blind in low light anyways. Tracers are always cool though! The real bitch is shooting with your gas mask on... Might as well go burst and pray you don't shoot the wrong person! ;)
