The problem is that they aren’t just developing a sequel. They are developing unprecedented (in consoles) cloud enhanced physics computation and level destructability. I think in the end we will see that was too ambitious and we’ll be left with a simplified version of their initial vision to try to recoup some of their losses.

I want to see Crackdown to be amazing, so I can wait. (The first delay stung, but I am past that.)

Get it to a great place before release.

This is one of the few MS games I've been looking forward to so it's disappointing that it has been delayed again. I've got plenty of other games to play in the mean time but it was something different to look forward to.

I have that fear as well.

The Last Gaurdian is one.

I'm not sure how universal a statement that is. It has some great stuff IN it, but it has some major flaws too. I'm not sure it would have fared as well as it did in the end if it hadn't achieved a cult status in gamer group-think before it's release. It succeeds as an art piece for sure, though.

Okay but, Microsoft hasn't confirmed the delay? Right now we have "sources." That not an official word. E3 is just around the corner, folks. Let's give it a hot tick, can we?

I think there's been too many sources which have been right in the past (Kotaku).....I also think MS would've replied with "We can confirm it's not cancelled and will be releasing on schedule/will be releasing later this year" when all the Amazon fuss kicked off, they didn't say that and I think it's clear the reason is the delay.

If the game is delayed, it's delayed for good reason. We need more polish in our games, more content, and we don't need it going up against Call of Duty, Battlefield and Red Dead to be honest.

I am sure I will buy it, but just saying overall.

CD will show up in some form and I doubt its been delayed. But even if it has, Microsoft has stated that they want it to be a pillar in the major franchise the likes of Gears, Halo and Forza. Sounds damn good to me!

It also depends on how long of a delay. If it’s Q1 next year, I don’t see it as a big deal considering the big games coming for the holiday.

Hopefully it’s playable at E3.

Not surprising. Hope Crackdown 3 delivers a solid experience but at this point it's just a lost cause. The game will be mocked for generations to come just like TLG was.

Scalebound, Fable Legends, and Crackdown 3. Basically all of Microsoft's second wave of big exclusives for this gen were either canceled or in development hell. Yikes, that's rough.

Pretty funny to see Jez get the confirmation after knocking Kotaku over this story yesterday. Dude should try to be a journalist more and a fanboy less.

Sounds good to me! MS might be learning we dont only buy AAA titles during holidays

"Our own sources familiar with Crackdown 3's development inform us that the game is coming along nicely, and Microsoft is eager to elevate Crackdown as a franchise to sit alongside the likes of Halo, Gears of War, and Forza. Hopefully, this additional delay will see Crackdown 3 get up to that level."

...hhmmmm

Our fans' response to the signature antics and explosive gameplay of "Crackdown 3" has been incredible. To ensure we deliver the experience they deserve, "Crackdown 3" will be launching in Feb 2019. We look forward to sharing more on "Crackdown 3" this Sunday during the Xbox E3 2018 briefing.

As hyped as I am for it, a delay until weeks next year isn’t so bad considering all the tiles coming
this holiday.

I just hope it’s playable at E3. At the very least we should get a new trailer.

Crackdown 3 Battle Royale in a huge city using multiple Azure servers for every 99 person match?

I just made that up, but it would be amazing to blow up a skyscraper to see it crush 15 opponents.

Feb hardly sounds like development hell. Honestly even if it were ready today, Feb sounds like a good time for release. Game needs to be re-introduced. Last year it was received badly. It would not fare well commercially just yet. A good showing at E3 combined with waiting until things get a bit less crowded early next year makes all the sense. Avoid Anthem and it has a chance to get a lot more attention. If the game can release in Feb, it probably could've made it out this Fall. Not a ton can happen in 3 months outside of additional polish. To me this is a sign Xbox leadership has confidence in the product.

I do hope they fix those damned animations and make at least some portions of the single player a lot more destructible.

According to some here dev hell is anything that takes more than 3 years to make, this game clearly has had development issues though or it would have been out by now. I'm all for the delay if it helps make it a good game though so I'm not bashing them at all but it's clear there are some challenges or the delay from the fake Nov 2017 date to Spring 2018 wouldn't have ended up being moved all the way to 2019.

Can't deny that. I think most Microsoft projects were struggling the past few years. This is also a game that was trying something innovative and risky with the multiplayer. They probably were in development hell for awhile.

Just stating that this delay to early 2019 doesn't indicate that it's still in development hell at this point. Microsoft hasn't been shy about pushing games out by deadline and patching 3-6 months down the line all gen. A few months just equates to more polish. Nothing major will change in this timeframe. Probably semantics but I think of development hell as a studio that is currently struggling to get a unified vision of a game going or make the initial concept work. Like it's stuck and not progressing. I work within the IT world and we see this all the time where there's a plan, then the tools or ideas don't work, and things get stuck. Scalebound seemed that way. As long as a game is progressing, even if it's slower than anticipated, I don't think that's development hell.

I think that all depends on them pulling off the promise of destruction. They ARE doing something very new and no doubt complicated. On top of that, it has to work on a massive scale.

If it were just some nondescript shooter that would be one thing, but they are doing something pretty innovative. Especially for the scale, and it has to WORK!

According to Jez (via Microsoft..) the reason for the delay is because their sprucing up the SP component. Word has it, this may be additional destruction to the SP to some what match the MP component, as the game is said to have gone through substantial improvents all ready.

Jez seems to be a little full of it but we'll see, I know there were rumors in the past that they were delaying it to work Terry Crews in more which sounded stupid to me so I don't really believe it.

I know at E3 last year the game was mainly being demonstrated on high end PC's (higher specs than the One X) and even though it wasn't looking particularly impressive many complained that it was also not doing well with performance. There is a reason they didn't show it at their press conference last year other than that crappy trailer. How often do 1st party titles that have never been shown before but are supposed to launch in a few months not get a full stage presentation at E3? I'd have understood if they'd shown it multiple times before but we never actually saw any gameplay before only a tech demo that looked a lot better than the actual gameplay does. Clearly there are some challenges, it's two separate teams working on different parts of the game and I'm all for giving them the time they need to put out a complete and polished title, I just hope those teams are up to the task.

Yeah but it's also something they've been working on for several years and still haven't shown, the team working on MP has nothing to do with the SP development, which could be part of the problem. We'll see though, MP doesn't really interest me but I hope they make the SP portion of the game as good as possible, I really liked the first one and I'm willing to forget the digital abortion that the second one was if this one is good :)

...and as I (and others) have mentioned before, Phil himself said the game was just announced too early. It makes everything seem like it’s taking longer. I’m sure there were problems, but it’s not like they are just sprucing up existing code, or just adding some assets.

What they are shooting for sounds well worth the wait, IF they can pull it off.

The MP has so many Possibilities, but part of it could be like Fortnite on steroids within a massively distructable city.

Yeah it was announced early but it's not like it's GTA where it's got a ton of systems running and really giving the feeling of a living world. in other words it's not the deepest of open worlds, I'm sure the lengthy dev time comes down to a lot of things. It looks like 2 studios are working on the SP portion and Sumo isn't small, it's 500 people but they probably work on more than one project at a time, sadly Ruffian is also helping and they were behind the awful crackdown 2 and also worked on Halo TMCC which had a lot of issues.
