Videogames and gamers have had their fair share of negativity and criticism. Some of it has been misunderstanding, some of it unwarranted, and some has been warranted. Online bullying is a problem, and it usually finds itself coupled with hate and racism. Violence in videogames and its effect on those that play them have been a matter of contention for many years. The treatment of women, both as characters and players, is a sensitive topic that deserves consideration. Cheaters many times ruin our gaming experiences. Most of us have probably been affected one way or the other, and I’m sure we could probably add more to the list.

Obviously, such concerns are not exclusive to our community. However, they are issues that have been attached to the community, and they have brought a stigma of negativity with them. That is why, in light of these issues, it so welcoming for our community and culture to be part of something positive and uplifting. Wouldn’t it be even better if it were something of benefit to society? That is where Extra Life comes into the picture.

What is Extra Life? It is a 24-hour gaming marathon that raises money for kids who suffer from serious illnesses like cancer or cystic fibrosis. As a parent of a child with special needs, this is something that I can definitively say blesses those in need. One hundred percent of the donations raised by this marathon go to the Children’s Medical Network hospitals. You can register, create your own team, and then begin raising funds for some very special kids. You can even set your goals and the exact hospital you would like to support. If that is too overwhelming, then you can even join another team and help them out instead.

On that note, the team at Crackdown and Microsoft Studios have decided to join this story. They have set a goal of $10,000, and they are asking people to join their team. Anyone who joins their team will help raise money towards their goal. The fun begins at 9am PDT on November 6th, as they plan to stream on twitch.tv/crackdown. Apparently, they will also have guests such as other developers and celebrities, and they plan to give away prizes, including an Xbox One, to people who participate. This will include their team members, stream viewers, and steamers. This is a good way for our gaming culture to do something positive for others and have fun while we do it. If you would like to help raise money, then it would be good to sign up as quickly as possible.

Be sure to visit their announcement page and their very own Extra Life page for more information. You can also view the announcement video below if you like.

If you would like to know more about Extra Life and how it began, then you can find that information here. I have also included the touching video below that concerns Victoria Enmon, and how she inspired this movement.

This is great and would surely be fun to join.

I think a Union team would be even better though.

Count me in for some playtime. I don't need a reason to game on the weekend! Don't think I'd last more than 8 hours or so at a time though.

I could save Halo 5's campaign for then. Too bad Star Wars BF comes out after.

Yeah, you just game when you can.
