Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy

Yeah, a lot of the news items here seem to come from GAF. Difference is, GAF has tons of discussion about the game and some wrangling about exclusivity. Here, it's all about exclusivity and little or nothing about the game. Go figure.

I was kind of surprised by the amount of bitching about the game over there.

You mean the "Why isn't it 60 fps" stuff? Yeah, lots of repetitious complaining about that.

Other than that, the discussion is mostly positive. Lots of people saying it looks good, and they are happily looking forward to playing it. Generating plenty of interest on social media. Looks like it'll be reasonably successful.

I never played the old ones, would this be a game worth getting? or is it one of those games that people have fond memories of but doesn't really stand up to today's gameplay standards?

Hard to say. Review embargo will end Thursday morning, so we'll have a better idea then. The game was originally designed by Naughty Dog, so it isn't lacking in basic quality.

I think part of the appeal is that it doesn't reflect today's game design staples. It was made in a different era, so you have characters that are more innocent, action and animations that are more goofy, and gameplay more centered around simple fun for anyone, kids to adults, not just the hardcore. It lacks the sophistication or "maturity" of modern games.

I'm sure it depends on how much you like platformers, too. That's the part that makes me wonder. I've never really liked pure platformers. I know I'll enjoy Crash to some degree, but I'm not sure how long the fun will last. I know they mix up the action a little (underwater levels, jet ski, etc.), so that's good.

Apparently unused levels might be released as dlc.

Didn't see it mentioned if they will get graphical updates or be released as is

You played part of a level in UC4. It's been a long time since I played the original games, but I don't remember there being all that much variety to the games. I enjoyed the original 2 (the only ones I played) but I can't imagine playing them now unless I can get them for $15 or so.

Yeah that part in UC4 wasn't all that fun IMO, didn't like running towards the camera.

Might not like UC4, either. Lots of running toward the camera in that, too. Pretty sure they stole that bit from Crash.

I loved that scene, btw. I thought it was hilarious that they included it in the game. When they switched to the screen, I sat there waiting for Nathan to move. He didn't move, and I was thinking, "Come on, dummy, go." Then I realized the dummy was me.

It was kind of tough because you had to use the old style controls (e.g., d-pad), which felt pretty awkward. I messed up a few times.

I hear the real game has some pretty tough segments, later on. This may be one of those games that I play until it's not fun anymore, not necessarily to completion.

Going off the comments a lot of people don't know what honest trailers is about

Review embargo lifts tomorrow at 7 am pacific, 10 am eastern.

I'm expecting about an 80. It'll get dinged because of outdated gameplay.

Get the updated release date list tomorrow at work so ill keep an eye for it but its 95% certain of being a 6 month exclusive

DF says:

  • 1080p/30 fps on the PS4 vs 1440p/30fps on the PS4 Pro
  • Slightly better Ambient Occlusion the PS4 Pro
  • Slightly higher resolution shadows on the PS4 Pro
  • Game obviously looks miles better than the original
  • Overall feel and atmosphere remain intact

lol Gamespot probably had issues beating the originals and still salty about it.

It's funny how people always get fixated on the outlier negative review. Kvally nearly tripped over himself to share bad news about a PS game*, lol. Then you've got the defenders obsessing over the review and picking it apart. "Sh*t reviewer!" "Four paragraphs!" "Only played half the game!" "Complains about difficulty! Git gud!" etc. It's kind of funny.

Anyhow, Metacritic is running 82. That's a good score. Slightly higher than I figured (80).

From the comments I'm reading, it seems like Crash 1 is the worst of the bunch -- more bad design choices, more cheap deaths, more unnecessary frustration. Sounds like 2 or 3 are the best places to begin.

I was encouraged to read in one review that the games have plenty of variety and don't feel particularly repetitive. That's good. That was one of my main concerns.

*console release exclusive

He's taking a lot of sh*t for that review. People always get fixated on the outlier negative review. This one came out early so grabbed people's attention. You've got people from both sides -- Kvally ran and nearly tripped over himself to share bad news about a PS (time-limited) exclusive, lol. Then you've got the defenders who obsess over it and pick it apart. "Sh*t reviewer!" "Four paragraphs!" "Only played half the game!" "Complains about difficulty! Git gud!" etc. (which Andy ran with so nonchalantly :)) It's kind of funny.

Fixed. :)

You think I'm putting those forward to defend against the Gamespot review? lol, no.

I look at the overall pattern of reviews. I don't get fixated on arguing against one guy's opinion. That's what's happening at GAF, though (which is where those comments came from). They can't let it go.

The GS review was the very first review I saw posted. I hadn't even gone to metacritic yet. My post to the review was nothing more than just trying to post a review. Note I never even said anything regarding the review.

Better scores than I thought it would get. I'll probably get it when I can find it for $25 or less.

Thinking of buying it but the mid-year sale is killing my wallet.

1 month PS+ subscription (for July PS+ games) $10
The Wolf Among Us (I heard it's good) $7.49
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams - Director's Cut (why not, it's cheap) $1.49
Helldrivers Democracy Strikes Back Edition (can you solo?) $8
Ratcher & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (Love the remake of R&C, Nexus, Crack and Time) $4
Gryphon Knight Epic (Shmups game. Hell yeah!) $3
Middle-earth: Shadow GOTY $4
Gof of War III Remastered $4
SteamWorld Dig $2.49

Crash does support downsampling, for anyone wondering (like me).

Never, ever played a Crash and I am very curious about this. I love me some platformers.
