Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy

Lots of people at GAF complaining about how hard Crash 1 is. The other two games are supposed to be more manageable.

Now I remember why I don't like platformers.

That guy is terrible though. Or he's trying to be funny.

The games are challenging. But not like that dude makes it seem.

He might stink. I might stink, too.

Are you picking this up? I'd be curious what your opinion is, once you do. A bunch of reviewers have commented on the difficulty, and the GAF thread is full of people pulling their hair out over certain levels (mostly in Crash 1, I believe). That made me decide to wait for a price drop. I'll play Yakuza first. I'll sock bad guys and then disco dance while others are working on their jump timing.

I remember finding that sort of thing frustrating, 15-20 years ago and deciding I didn't like platformers. All those deaths from minor mis-timings, all that punishment for little mistakes. Getting reset and having to do it over and over again until you got it just right. Maybe I stunk. That is quite possible. But I'd always reach a point where the game was more frustrating than fun.

Yeah I want to get it at some point. Probably at a discount as well.

The difficulty complaints do seem confined to Crash 1. Sometimes they mention stuff like hit detection, control, input lag, and movement issues that contribute to cheap deaths. It was the first game, so ND hadn't really worked things out yet. Some of it may come down to how VV developed this version, too.

When I pick it up, I'll probably just skip the first game and play the second and Warped. From what I've seen, Warped really mixes up the gameplay nicely.

I was thinking of holding off for a bit but after watching some Twitch gameplay last night I'm feeling the itch. Might grab it this afternoon although I'd like to finish Ico first.

Very early indications are that it's selling pretty well.

I already posted this in the Sales thread, but I'll mention it here, too: Crash is #1 in the UK and has taken the top spot for most first-week sales for any exclusive game this year, edging out Horizon Zero Dawn. It's the first time any Crash game has ever placed #1 in the UK.

Since it seems to be selling well, people are moving on to discussing what sort of other revivals we might expect. An interview with the CEO of Activision* indicates they are aware of the "passion" people have for Crash, and they want to continue to keep that fanbase happy with more content.

The #1 request of that fanbase, as far as I can tell, is a remaster/remake of Crash Team Racing. I agree, that would be pretty cool. We don't have any kart racers anymore (apart from Mario Kart, of course).

Ended up grabbing it yesterday. Trying to finish up Ico though because if I don't then I doubt I'll want to go back. Judging by the walkthrough I'm using (told you I wanted it over with), I'm at least 3/4 done.

Will make a good bundle this holiday.

They should've added a VR mode to the games for those seeking the ultimate motion sickness.

Played through the first five levels or so and game is great. Never owned the original as I only rented it but feels good playing again. Game looks amazing as well. I would love getiting more full remakes to old PS1 games like Spyro or Ape Escape.

I am still pinching myself finding it hard to believe I am playing Crash Bandicoot again after all these years. Every level was memorable because of the number of times they were repeated back then. So much game value in this package. This is really what put Sony on the map and was a huge part of Playstation's brand. This one is going to get lots of play.

Makes complete sense because after playing through about half the second area (just past second boss) these are my two biggest issues with the game. The weird thing is that I never played the original that much but that hit detection is a huge issue. I'm glad to know I'm not losing my mind thinking I wasn't holding the stick right.

I said before that if they remaster Crash Team Racing I'm going to re buy a PS4.

Hands down I have some of the most fond moments of my early to late teens growing up playing that game. I would re buy a PS4 JUST for that remake. Sold my old PS4 to my nephew.

I hear anecdotal reports of people buying a PS4 just to play this Crash trilogy. It's surprising that a remake of a 20 year old game would be a system seller, but nostalgia is powerful, and a lot of people have fond memories of Crash.

Sounds to me like a CTR remake is a good bet. They could either do a straight remaster or else do a remake/re-imagining, with updated mechanics and options. I'm sure the fans would want the former, and so that's probably what they'll go with. But I can't help thinking that a fully revamped CTR could rival Mario Kart.

I always thought CTR was a better game then Mario Kart. CTR had a better boost system that actually rewarded players who had mastered it. I did. There was one level in the sewers that had a shortcut that REQUIRED a HUGE boost in order to get there. Playing the game with my siblings I was the only one who could reach it. It was like a hole in the wall that was damn near impossible to reach even with a perfect boost.

Bottom line the game took skill. I swear to god I'd give up my current career to play CTR competitively. I'm not even joking.

I freaking LOVED CTR, played it a ton with a friend. Ironically, never played a "normal" Crash game. CTR is what actually has me interested in this Trilogy remake.

It's like the Dark Souls of platformers.

#1 in worldwide sales for June, btw, for those who don't follow the sales thread.

Posted in the sales thread, but worth mentioning here, too:

Activision CEO said results for Crash "surpassed our wildest expectations by a very large margin." And that was just based on the two days in June, not the continued success it has had throughout July (placing #1 on charts throughout Europe).

The CEO signaled that there will be more games like this (e.g., more Crash titles -- think CTR) as well as "looking at other IP in our catalog" and "seeing if it [other IP] can be reborn." People at GAF are pointing to Spyro the Dragon as the next likely candidate.

I only played Spyro briefly and don't have the attachment to it that some people do, but plenty of people seem excited by the prospect.

Apparently, there was also some reference to Spryo embedded in the Crash remake.
