Crossplay - Gamers Win

They seemed to care A LOT when MS was against it.

Indeed.

It's fun to watch tho.

From EG,

PlayStation Worldwide Studios boss Shawn Layden addressed on the PlayStation Blogcast episode 308.

Layden began by outlining the challenges Sony faced in enabling cross-play, pointing to technical, business and customer service issues the company had to sort out.

"We know this is a want, this is a desire, and we want to be able to deliver that in the best way possible," he said. "Now, enabling cross-play isn't just about flipping a switch and 'there you go'. It's a very multi-dimensional kind of attribute or feature.

If only epic hadn't done just that... twice.

I don't think one developer (Epic) deals with the sort of infrastructure and complexities that a company like Sony does. I don't think they're equivalent. Granted, I'm not a tech guy, so I don't have the expertise to speak with any authority. But I don't think it's as simple as people make it out to be.

No, Enabling Cross-Play Isn't as Easy as People Like to Think, Says PlayStation Boss

Well, according to PlayStation boss Shawn Layden, enabling cross-play isn't an easy process, despite what you may have read in comments sections on the internet.

"Now, enabling cross-play isn't just about flipping a switch and 'there you go' -- it's a very multi-dimensional kind of attribute or feature," Layden states on the latest PlayStation Blogcast. "So we had to look at it from a technical point of view, we have to work with our partners from a business point of view, we have to make sure that if we enable this, do we have the right customer service support, do we have the right messaging out there, do we have all these different things that you have to get in line, and it's rather ordinal. They have to go in a certain order to get them set up." Yeah, doesn't sound simple, does it?

Layden continues: "It's taken us longer, certainly than I would have wanted, but it took as long as it was gonna take to get it ready and get it done, which is why we were able to announce it last Tuesday, but also enable it at the same time." In other words, it sounds like Sony could have rolled out the announcement ahead of time, but it wanted to get it all sorted in one go.

So Sony may have been pigheaded in its approach to cross-play -- even though it made sense from the business perspective of the market leader -- but the Japanese giant has clearly put a lot of time and effort into changing its stance.

We've said it all along -- we doubt that enabling cross-play was ever as easy as some people liked to make out.

Hard to take a suits words on this seriously when the people making the games have said the complete opposite.

plus, wow, "it's taken us longer, certainly longer than I would have wanted." Where the hell was this attitude before?

what kinda contradictory bulls***

whatever, my bitching continues: now give me backwards compatability you mongs. my ps4 should offer more features than my ps3

People are going to find out really fast that this is all about perception, they "wanted crossplay" but it's not going to make a bit of difference in the real world. If you already play popular MP games on PS4 or X1 you don't have a hard time finding a full game as it is. I have no problem with them doing it but I also had no problem with them not doing it.

I think it's obvious that if most PS gamers cared about cross-play or multiplayer in general they'd have gotten an X1 or a PC instead. The multiplayer is just a better experience there, not that it's not good on PS4 but i'll take Live over PSN if that was my focus.

Yet here we are with droves of fanboys claiming that Sony isn't for the players because they wouldn't allow a feature that the masses don't care to have anyway. Goes to show the mindset of people on forums.

It's the "you owe me" mindset, if I want it you have to do it even if in the end I'm not really going to notice it one way or the other. As far as PSN and XBL I don't really see how XBL is better, since games are pretty much handled through the game menu I don't really notice the network. When it comes to the console UI and all around navigation I think PS4 and PSN are quite a bit better than X1 and XBL, they are more streamlined and user friendly.

Kinda like when Xbox first announced that the ONE wasn’t gonna include a headset, people got their torches and in the end they lacked one in. But now a days they’re not even included in the ONE X :( dono bout the S and PS Pro thou

Wasn’t there some other counter statement from another employee on what that suit said on the blog?

"That suit" is Shaun Layden. He's the equivalent of Phil Spencer on the Sony side. Xbox fans implicitly trust whatever Phil says, as if he's Moses come down from the mountain, but when it's Shawn Layden, he's just "some suit."

I'm not discounting that he's doing PR (just as Phil does), but he's in a position to know what he's talking about when it comes to Sony's infrastructure and processes.

I agree that Sony didn't move as fast as they could have. I don't think they were motivated. I don't think they cared that much. It wasn't really in their interest, not in the same way it's in the interests of Epic or even MS. They did it to appease a vocal minority and subdue the negative press. They got nagged into it.

Guess I’m just ignorant, and forgetful, I still expect to see Kaz each time there’s a show, same goes for Iwata (rip good sir).

Might be because he doesn’t get around much or his face PR as you said.

Does Larry still work for/in the live team... and I digress, apologies.

Really I guess he hasn’t grown on me much yet. Heck I even forget Matrick, Allard and Fries was a thing when he was in office :p but the latter two made a lasting impact with the 360 presentation.

No problem. Layden is still pretty new. He took over for Jack Tretton, when he stepped down a few years ago. You'll see him at E3 and some other events, but he doesn't have the public presence that Phil does. He seems more introverted, less of an extrovert than Phil is, less comfortable in the spotlight. He seems like a good guy to me, though.

By "Larry," do you mean Larry Hyrb? Major Nelson? Yeah, he's still around. Not sure what team he's on now. I see him mostly connected with marketing efforts.

Well that's different, if you want people to pay a fee to use your online gaming platform the least you can do is include a cheap headset for chatting. Crossplay between consoles was never a thing before and nobody ever expected it until MS brought it up for Minecraft. At the end of the day crossplay isn't going to make much difference and really it was good to get this last bit of negative press out of the way before they start ramping up for the PS5.

Trenton I liked, cheeky lil fellow he was/is.

Yeah, Major... I do remember when he first started it was like a blog of sorts, then some devs or people on the Xbox team started their own and he was gonna stop doing his thing but I guess the community didn’t want him to leave and the other team/post they did. Honestly I forget most of the details, there was a brief period in time where I kinda set gaming aside and had school and other matters to attend to.

The thing that brought me back was my curiosity as to “why is Larry wearing dog ears at e3” and so many memes about him with this “angry joe” person?

Word... I’m just hoping they don’t get selective with games. Like later down the line some may say “why can fortnite have crossplay but cod can’t?”

You completely missed the point.

Here is a hint: As of this update, my son and his cousin can play together now (and now they really are). Prior to this update, they could not....

Yeah, once they open this can of worms they really can't close it. I wonder how many publishers will really be for this if they suddenly see a dip in sales because people who own multiple platforms no longer buy more than one copy of a specific game. I am sure it's not a huge percentage but we'll see.

Gotcha.... I do wonder what will happen with exclusive content like that of Destiny on PS4 or user profiles for stats or paid dlc, kinda hoping this is the last gen where we see this kinda stuff. I’m kinda sorta ok with paying for dlc of the same game for different platforms. Skills/level gotta be transferable for it to be really worth it.

Yeah hopefully that exclusive timed DLC thing is coming to an end, as it is the next COD is only going to be a week difference vs a month for PS4.

If some dude wants to tuck it back and tape his sack and gussy up a huge rack and dress up like Tifa Lockhart, we should not label it as crossplay. It's all cosplay, whether or not it's cross-gender.

We won’t judge ya m8....oh, ohhhhhhh, Oreo

So I guess the only feature left that is still considered "dumb and pointless" is backward compatibility. The interwebs are the best and worst thing to happen to gaming. "Gamers" are also the best and worst people on the interwebs.

Cross play was considered "dumb and pointless" because it was never on the table to begin with. No one bought a PS4 thinking they would be able to play against XBox players. No one thought this during the PS2 era, the PS3 era, or current gen. It's been engrained in us that Playstation players shall not fraternize with XBox players.

BC is stupid because gamers don't even finish current generation games, let alone poorly aged games we experienced 10 years ago. Look at how poppin BC threads are at places like ResetEra, NeoGaf, or even here. Cobwebs. BC is mostly a marketing gimmick used as an appeal to nastolgia. You pop in Halo 3, realize it looks and plays much worse than you remember, and then go boot up Red Dead 2 five minutes later.

No one is going to do that with their X Box owning friend who lives down the street and loves Fortnite as much as you do.

Tell that to all the people playing BC CODs

That’s rigtb, I’ll be playing with my friends when we have LAN parties, pc folk in the garage, Xbox in the living room and PS4s in two other rooms, maybe friends from out of state or the next city over will join...just saying.

It’s funny, my brother who when he had a 360 all his friends were gaming cod on PS3 but now they’re all on destiny or fortnite on XBO. But now he can, finally.

Lol. BC is a marketing gimmick, says anyone without an Xbox One X. GTFO! We're playing 4K versions of all of our beloved games and it's a gimmick. STFU, dude! Way to name drop other forums that I don't care about. Halo 3 looks MILES BETTER than it ever did before. It's in 4K now, and has detail that was completely absent in the 360 era. It looks like a completely different game, and at 60fps, to boot. Great story!
