I like this take better:

PS4 Exclusive Days Gone to Have Huge Story Focus

"Looks like Sony Bend will be doubling down on narrative, as Chinese whispers suggest that it will have 'hours' of cinematics. Of course, it’s an open world game so expect these to be interspersed between long stretches of gameplay, but it seems like plot is going to play a big part in the experience."

Sounds good to me.

In the video of the alternative E3 play through this year Sam Witwer said he'd been a part of the project for about 3 years now so the fact that he's been doing performances for the game off and on for 3 years suggested a huge story focus at the time, glad to see it confirmed here as well.

Really looking forward to the game. I don't play zombie games much. TLoU was the closest I've played in years, so I'm not 'burnt out' on the premise of the game at all. Looks great and there seems to be a decent amount of depth in the gameplay.

I was concerned that it would be another zombie game, the main twist being "this time, there are a whole lot of them!" I'm happy to hear that it will have a robust storyline. That should help to differentiate it from the pack of other zombie games.

I'm still a little skeptical on this one for some reason. But it does look cool.

Hopefully it's amazing. I'll have a better feel for it after E3.

Man, this e3 will be the 3rd one for Days Gone huh? Sheez.. better be coming out this year...

To me too.

I think the game looks really good. Hopefully the story will match that.

Really? Was it 3 years ago when it was first shown? Damn.

Well it was 2 e3's ago, the reveal closed out sony's show in 2016 with that lumber yard mission where he was hunting "T-dog" and last e3 was the one where he rode his bike & got clothes-lined and they showed the infected bear at the end. There's still no release date so they'll be at e3 for sure. Game better be releasing this year though....

It'll be good. Maybe not massive AAA good but damn close to it. When you have that many good games to look forward to something like Days Gone gets overlooked.

Well so far I only know of 3 PS exclusives that I'm interested in this year. That is 3 more than MS exclusives I know of that I'm interested in though...

I figured this would happen, the fall already has a huge open world game coming out with RDR2 which Sony will be marketing and we still have Spider-Man coming out sometime likely in the late summer. It's probably for the best that this game isn't slated to come out during a highly competitive time. Sony also needed to hold something back because we don't know how many of the other announced games will be ready in 2019. Still disappointing that we have to wait at least a year to play Days Gone but I can totally see why it has to be that way.

Woops, oh well. Would've been nice to have a big game for the holidays, but it looks like another year where Sony releases all their big games earlier in the year, then leaves the holiday season relatively empty. I'm assuming Spider-Man will come before the Fall, as Shinobi hinted, although maybe he's wrong and Spidey will end up being their big holiday game.

Wasn't this supposedly a 2017 game to begin with?

I don't remember it ever being more specific than "2018."

Being that they have the marketing or COD and RDR2 that should be just fine for the holidays, it would have been a mistake to release this game during that time of year as it would have gotten destroyed by RDR2. I'm guessing it'll be what has become their typical big Spring release.

Sony would have been just fine without any marketing deals or any exclusives this fall. They have the momentum. I just think its pretty sad when devs have a super broad target like 2018 from a year ago and they can't even hit that. Crackdown is another example of this stuff. I definitely don't think RDR2 would "destroy them" that's completely ridiculous unless they release in the same month. It's not even the same type of game. Future post-apocalypse and a western with a heavy multiplayer addition. Days Gone will stand against anything, it has over a year of solid hype behind it and despite being a "zombie" game, its unique. The game just isn't ready for this year, simple as that.

I also think marketing deals are less of a big deal now when X1X while always have the best console versions, and by an even bigger margin than we're used to comparing to Xbox one and ps4.

I've never bought a multiplatform game because of a marketing deal or even exclusive dlc honestly.

I have bought multiplatorm games that were outright exclusive for a period of time though.

I can't remember the last time a marketing deal swayed me, but yeah if RDR2 came out 6 months earlier on pro, I might get it, I doubt it, but it would be tempting. It won't though, it'll come out with PS logos on the trailers etc and run much better on Xbox. Big deal if we wait 4 months for a map pack, I could be playing Days Gone... wait.

No reason to think its delayed because of it but even COD is running away from RDR2

You think? COD is coming out a month before their typical Nov release, not an entire quarter(at least) like Day's Gone delay.
Also, its not the first COD game to hit in October.

It hasn't released in October since COD 2 so it seems like a safe guess.

Maybe, but it seems more like a tweak to the release window versus Day's Gone.

Yeah I doubt its why its delayed but I don't think it would be a great idea to release in October or November though and December is pretty much sending a game to die.
