This story seems to be blowing up on Reddit today. Apparently a Redditor posted a mock up advertisement for PUBG on XBox a month ago. Someone at Microsoft liked it enough to use it. Brazen to say the least.

They can't keep getting away with this?

Too bad for the designer. The designer used copyrighted materials, from two different companies, to created the ad comp. There's no basis for the argument that he should be compensated in any way. Don't cry foul when your material is used after you used people's/company's copyrighted material.

Ewwww

He used copyrighted work from Microsoft and PlayerUnknown, and then gets upset when they use his idea? At most, he should be able to link to the ad and claim he consulted on it.

Yeah, I just tend to empathize with the common man rather than the giant corporation in scenarios like this. The story IMO, isn't that the kid used copyrighted material. It's that someone at MS thought it was OK to steal his idea so blatantly.

You mean like how he used another 'designer's' artwork? He created nada except for putting the elements together.

Nah. I can't get there when I see this story.
??? You can't get there? But you get where? Hate Town? What is the issue, exactly? You want to hate a large company comprised of thousands because some guy in Microsoft's advertising department saw something a fan created with their content and liked it enough to use it? Quite frankly, I honestly think the guy should be proud someone in Microsoft's advertising department liked it enough to use it, but how on earth would he have ownership of it? That makes 0 sense. What exactly is this guy entitled to? NONE of it is his property!

This hits pretty close to me. It really reminds me of a fake ad I made up way back when, in design school when the "new" VW Beetle came out, I made an ad with the concept car hiding in the middle of carpet fibres, within a larger image of a rug. The headline just said "Snug". I remember just wishing I'd have sent it to VW so they could use it. I would have never dreamed that they would actually owe me something for it, because it's not like I was contacted to make it for them. Why the hell do so many people feel so entitled now a days?

I like how the headline is big, bad "Microsoft" at fault, and not some entitled Millennial claims ownership over Microsoft's content.

Major Nelson just said Microsoft is pulling the advert down. Sounds like even Microsoft knows this doesn't look good.

GordoSan, the redditor isn't looking for any reimbursement from Microsoft. It just looks bad for MS to rip off a random gamer like this.

FYI, I gave the thread the title. I moved his post from the PUBG thread.

I agree with what you said.

Good artist copy, great artist steal - da Vinci ;)

Haven’t looked at the r post but this is nothing really new. Would be nice to at least get recognition but it’s not due or owed to said artist.

There’s artist out there who work independently and never get credit due to contract agreement, granted they are paid.

I could see them crying foul if it was totally original work, like had he created all the art in illustrator as vector art and instead of an Xbox it been his own design of a console.

MS should just give him props and a code, maybe an Xbox as that’d be probably worth the same had they paid him on contract

..but my point was the guy could have just took pride that they were inspired. Now it's gone.

They could have just gave him a free Xbox One X and say: "thanks for inspiring us!". We live in a way too sensitive world right now. For good or bad, I'll bet there is a guy in the advertising department getting fired right now... Why so much hate, though? It's a similar advertising image. Big deal!

Hate? Where are you seeing hate? I believe I said "someone at MS" one or two times regarding this story.

It's just a fun little David v Goliath or Rocky v Drago story. I was just surprised anyone would jump to Drago's defence. I mean he did steroids and showed no remorse for killing Apollo in an exibition match! An exhibition match FFS!!

MS didn't rip off the gamer. The gamer ripped off Microsoft and PUBG.

If he dies he dies. For Drago thats a soz.

Facts do tend to elude you alright.

No. It's not the facts. The kid never tried to profit from his work. And believe me, it was work.

Microsoft took work made by one of their fans, and tried to profit off it without giving the creator any credit.

It's just a really bad look. Even Micrisoft admitted as such when they pulled the ad.

It's just strange seeing people defend Microsoft when they were clearly, without question, in the wrong.

MS is working on making amends right now. The Reddit post already has more than 84k upvotes (which is insane).

And if there was a Reddit thread saying 9 + 9 = 20 and it had 84K upvotes you'd probably believe that as well.

No. This is a PR issue, not a mathematical one. The public overwhelmingly agrees that this is a bad look for Microsoft. I agree that it's a bad look for Microsoft. Microsoft agrees it's a bad look for Microsoft.

When you add up all three, you'll find it's...wait for it...a bad look for Microsoft.

Microsoft will probably send him an Xbox One X, or something.

Wrong. He absolutely tried to profit from it by getting exposure and linking to his design website where he charges people for work and uses other copyright work also. I have no problems with him using other peoples work, creating a comp, and trying to get paid work. No problem at all. At the same time, don’t get upset when someone uses one of your ideas.

Source, I’ve been a designer for nearly 30 years.

Why do you think Microsoft pulled his advertisement?
