I think executives all over see COD and Destiny raking in tons of cash on microtransactions and they just jump without seeing the multiple failures/risks.

The live service bubble is bursting. Bungie was probably the most successful at it outside of COD, and even they had tons of ups and downs.

The reality is that gamers can consume their content faster than they can make it. You have to invest a ton of resources to even get these kinds of games off the ground, and of course at any moment, people could jump ship for another game. I think Bungie kind of hit that covid gaming void a few years ago when there were not a lot of games. Now there's tons of other good games to play and they aren't printing money anymore.

I think the suits see a steady money stream, when in reality it is a house of cards. 7 months with no new content is going to have even the die hards drop off fast, and things like they tried to pull with the "starter pack" just accelerate that. They are not going to be able to market their way around this.

Right, and Destiny from a PVP standpoint has been a disaster for a long time now. The PVE side of the game was the only thing worth playing. The Bungie that did the old school Halo games is long gone. Heck, I'd much rather play Halo Infinite MP than Destiny 2 PVP.

People forget that D2 PVP was designed for 4v4 with dual primaries. The mess we have now was their best attempt at fixing that mess. Ultimately it is just a spammy, spawn camp fest since the maps are too small for 6v6.

Hire people?

You could make better decisions than Bungie at this point
I feel like we could all (here at Union) could make better decisions than some of these companies do. I do know that in the end, the decisions they make come from the pencil pushers. Whatever makes them the most possible profit.

What I find is that where most execs fail is in chasing short term profits over long term success.

It isn't just video games, big companies want big profits this month/quarter, even at the expense of long term success.

They'll lay off workers to make the Q4 numbers look better, but with no plan for how to get Q1 and beyond back on track. Bungie's #1 problem is delays in the content, and they are cutting people. Cost cutting can make sense, but these companies often start down a spiral that leads to more delays, more layoffs, etc.

They don't seem to see gamers for the fickle people we are and instead just feel like we'll follow them anywhere. While there's certainly some "addiction" factor in these games, for the most part, we get bored and/or angry and we leave.
