"Earlier today VRFocus reported on rumours that Microsoft was planning to reveal its own virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for its Xbox One console at E3 2015 next June, potentially for release later on in the year. Now VRFocus has been informed that VR developers are indeed working with an Xbox One VR HMD already. The developer kit is currently ‘circulating’ a group of developers working on the console.

Several studios have confirmed to VRFocus that they are working with the device, while Techradarhas also received similar information that suggests teams have already begun work on software for the kit. No specific information about the device itself or exactly which videogames are in development for it has been revealed just yet. Obviously this will pit Microsoft’s kit directly against the Project Morpheus HMD currently in development for the PlayStation 4, as well as Oculus VR’s own Oculus Rift PC HMD.

This news won’t come as much of a surprise to VR enthusiasts, who have been expecting the reveal of a Microsoft-branded HMD since the company’s Head of Xbox Phil Spencer revealed that it had been working with VR technology ‘for a while’ at the 2014 Game Developer Conference. 2014 has seen the company’s name attached to VR plenty of times, including rumours that FOVE, a tech start up that Microsoft is heavily attached to, is looking at an Xbox One HMD with eye-tracking. Various patents have also pointed towards the company’s interest in such a device. Could these reports lay the foundation for the official HMD?

Either way, it’s a long wait until E3 2015 and in that time both Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and Oculus VR are likely to be sharing much more about their respective HMDs. VRFocus will be following each and every update within the VR industry, keeping you up-to-date with the latest."

And MisterX tweeted this earlier this morning:

MSs VR/AR is finally going to be announced. Projects started long before competitors. XB1 have enough power 1080p@30 per eye. 4k cable say hi

Unveil at E3, Price it right, make Tomb Raider & Forza 6 use it, release it in November. Take my money...assuming it is good.

Interesting if true. I'll have to check it out. As it stands, I don't hold too much interest in VR tech.

Guys, I've just realised something, now hear me out. It's like misterxmedia magically finds insider information directly after a massive rumour hits the internet.

You don't think that... no, couldn't possibly be, silly even suggesting it.

Spill the beans, Flynn, you're a reckless, unprofessional Microsoft employee... help us out here man!

Thanks for that, Flynn ;)

A couple of the other 'insider' guys have been hinting for several months now of some big 'showing' of sorts before E3.

Hmmm.

What the hell is Project 22 anyways?

It involves Peter Molyneux's 22 Cans.

Milo is coming back!

So, is pretty much a given that this will work with PC as well, right? That seems to be their MO.

Good to hear. Not sure how these consoles are going to push the horsepower needed for VR but it is nice the market recognizing VR as a legitimate platform.

I think something in this area at E3 is a definite, but before E3 would be awesome.

Even if unveiled though, I'm sure it'll be at least a year before we can get our hands on it.

I live VR but I'd rather have illumiroom.
Eh, I'd really have to see all that could do. Sure the light show and projections are awesome, but I don't think I'd feel immersed at all.

Too many hardware and environmental restrictions to have this illumaroom be plausible. I predict a device that will render VERY simple, OG xbox like graphics with a minimum of 60 (unfortunate) FPS. Noobs will Ooo and Ahh at what is out there but ultimately fall short of what will happen. What will happen is a complete evolution of how we perceive and interactive with reality.

I'd like to see MS combine the Kinect and VR so you can track your movements in gamr. Being able to see your hands arms in near real time could give MS an edge.
As far as Misterxmedia's claims of 30fps per eye, that framerate isn't nearly enough to cut motion sickness. You need at least 75fps for that preferably more.

Oculus has been and will continue to blaze the VR trail for at least a few more years. I won't stop thinking differently until other companies prove to not just be copying what Oculus is doing. Magic Leap (AR) could put in a whole new wrinkle in this race to an alternative reality major companies are having. I believe these technologies will come and complete a puzzle that we never knew existed. Just like mobile phones. This technology will start as slick goggles where people can appreciate a new experience not possible on a monitor. Just like Mario was not possible on a board game. Goggles will turn into glasses (10-15 years), glasses will turn into contacts or retina lit displays (25+ years) and at the end of this tech disruption I think we'll have an implant or contact gel that would enable AR/VR while being connected to a network (50?+ years)

See you in the Metaverse.

Random 'source':

Talked to my MS source got some info!!!

The VR that MS has is Done. They said it looks hella Kool lol. I was told that it is both VR & AR and for XB1 and windows. Will be released holidays 2015 and coming to NA first not sure what other regions will get it @ launch yet.MS is on lockdown they are being very tight with there info internally right now. Sorry got no new Dx 12 news :(

highly doubt it will release next year when we haven't seen or herd anything concrete.

That is the MS way. We know they like keeping things close to the chest. I guess we could see at it in January @CES, but E3 seems far more likely.

Sounds like E3 is going to be awesome this coming year.
Sounds like it has potential to be awesome. Ultimately though I'm sure it'll end just like every year: Over ambitious hopes by all of us only to be left with disappointment.

I play enough video games as it is. It is easy to remember that life exists outside my TV simply by looking around my living room. I don't want to lose my sense of actual reality by strapping on a headset and losing all the reminders that there's a real world out there.

I might be over thinking this but I sincerely hope developers maintain a sense of responsibility with the power that VR could have on people.

MisterX's guy', so prob BS but apparently we'll find out soon enough:

Insider: The vr head mount will be full ar.. and be an all in one system.
Kinect can produce ar codes with I.r algorithms not seen by the user. It can do this in stereo mode with 120hz. It allows 3d plassment in a 4d environment. Room alive is missing the hardware so the early demos are versions that will support the final hardware.. The hardware vr/ar can read these code via special purposes ar camera places on each side of the vr hmd.
Kinect can bounce the ar code via i.r light bending
Which will allow a full 360 and a floor and sky box to be produced weather of surfaces as it can use any room with 8x8 meters and in a dark or light environment.
This is more then project morpheus. But it will support oculus and its development tools.

The a.r lens and a chip will be produced by samsung.

The hmd will also have external processing and will use a cloud feature to offload with a 0.2 millions of a second of delay with full processing.

Processing will incorporate gpu cpu in order to leave the x1 architect free for more in-depth graphics functions.

The cpu/gpu will handel basic drawing stencil and tragle mapping. Low shader and polygon models. And real time phsyic of light fealds. The x1 hardware will enhance this. 200%.. this extra hp will only be accessible and is only design for vr/ar games. Vr/ar need special purposes processing elerments that will use too many processing cycles. Creating too much delay in processing and movement input will be to high to be injoyed if the x1 architecture has to processes all elerments

Plus Kinect / hmd / x1 architecture. There is an ecosystem that can not be unbalanced. Thus design will allow ms to give the console market a much better vr/ar experience then the other console. It will be even be superior to first retail oculas. There is going to be more before e3 but main hardware will launch 2015/16.

Hmm.. I am really doubting this will translate to a modern game. The X1 already struggles to maintain 1080p/30fps on current games, so I'm wondering how that would translate to a game like say Elite:Dangerous, or even a game like a FPS. Even COD:AW was 900p/60fps right? That would translate to 900p/30fps in VR. Not only would the resolution be really annoying but the 30fps will induce a lot of motion sickness.

Going by what is said by misterxmedia above, the headset has its on CPU/GPU to off set the X1 hardware burden, it can use the cloud to off-set load too. Both actually make sense, but I wonder how much that might add to overall cost.

Hmm.. I didn't know that. Well, I guess the bottleneck would be two things:

1) Only approved games on the cloud (which would certainly be sparse in the beginning).

2) Input lag from the system while playing over WiFi. I get tremendous lag playing my Nvidia Shield at home.

Do not know about #1, but #2 is certainly something I wondered.
