Xbox Exec Talks Investment, Single Player, and More: “Gaming Is Playing a Bigger Role in the Company”

Xbox Games Marketing General Manager Aaron Greenberg talks about the efforts made by Microsoft to diversify the content created by its first party studios.

Back at E3, Microsoft announced 21 and the creation of a brand new one. At Gamescom 2018 DualShockers had a chat with Xbox Games Marketing General Manager Aaron Greenberg about this new course for the house of Xbox.

Greenberg mentioned that what we’re seeing is Microsoft stepping up its commitment to first party titles.
“It’s an exciting time. While we don’t pre-announce things, I think you’re seeing that the level of commitment is there, and that we believe in continuing to grow that content.”

[…]

“Know that the company is focused and investing to continuing to grow our content, and we’re gonna be bringing more and more games to our fans no matter what device they’re playing on, and growing services like Xbox Game Pass.”
Asked whether Microsoft is looking at single player story-driven games with a renewed eye, Greenberg mentioned that the company looked for studios that would broaden the diversity of its content.
“We love single player games. […] It’s something that we absolutely believe in, and you’re right. I think the thing about these studios that makes them unique is really first and foremost, they are incredibly talented developers that make really high quality games. Most of these tend to be focused — If you think about Compulsion, or Ninja Theory, or Undead — they’re make games that are uniquely different from what we’re doing today in our first-party studios.

These games are different than Forza, or Halo, or Gears, or some of the franchises that people know us for. That’s gonna add to the diversity of the content.

[…]

We want people to make great games, so we want to give them the independence and the focus to go do that. Ultimately we know that all the data shows that gamers like to play a wide variety of games. People want to play co-op games, they want to play multiplayer games, and they want to play single player games, and we wanna make sure that we have the best of those games coming out of those internal studios as well.”
He also explained why Microsoft ramped up its investment in gaming:
“I think first is that gaming is playing a bigger role in the company. The fact that Phil Spencer is supporting directly the CEO, and just the importance of gaming as a strategic investment for the company, it’s never been more focused than what we’re seeing today.

There is a lot of exciting opportunities for us to leverage all the power and resources that we have at Microsoft. We talked about things like Microsft AI […], or the whole Azure cloud theam and what they’re able to do there, as we think about the future of game streaming and cloud is really exciting. But for me what I really love about this team is that we’re really customer-obsessed. We put our fans first in everything we do. That’s why you see investments in things like Game Pass.”
For now, Microsoft’s initiatives seem to be bearing fruit. Just a few weeks ago the company announced a massive 39% improvement in gaming revenue year-on-year.

Sounds like there weren't any announcements of studio acquisitions at Gamescom, eh? Some people were speculating that if they were going to acquire Obsidian, they would announce it there.

That or maybe nothing has been finalized yet and it's too premature to announce.

Hmmmmm maybe they were given Scalebound? Old rumor, but maybe....

Xbox’s Aaron Greenberg Talks Playground Games’ Unannounced Game: “A Big, Big Exclusive Game”
Playground Games is working on a new game that is also a rather intriguing secret. While some believe it's a new Fable, DualShockers asked Aaron Greenberg about it.

Playground Games has been building up a second team to work on a brand new game (which according to unconfirmed rumors could be a new Fable title). At Gamescom in Cologne, DualShockers asked Xbox Games Marketing General Manager Aaron Greenberg for a bit more color on this.
“I think if you look at Playground and their pedigree and the way that they approach game development, the sense of purpose they put behind it, the care, the thoughtfulness… […] The team is so talented, and just know that same leadership and the same thought process, what they’re bringing to Seasons and just totally innovating open-world gaming with Forza Horizon 4. That same leadership, that same talent pool is gonna be driving influence on this second project.
While it’s a secret project and I understand that you and probably all gamers out there the thing they want to know most about, we just ask for a little bit of patience, but know that making sure our world-class team is working on a big, big exclusive game for our fans, is something they should be excited about.”
I did ask him if it’s a “fabulous project” but he just giggled. Then he mentioned that fans will be excited when the time is right to reveal the game.
“We know that the team is gonna do something that’s really special, and for us we wanna be thoughtful about when we reveal what that is, but they have a second team there, it’s extra capacity, and we think that when the time is right, and the team is ready, fans will be excited about what we have to share.
If you want to learn more about Microsoft’s plans for the future, you can read what Greenberg said about investment, acquisitions, and diversity of content, and about the commitment to Japanese games. You can also enjoy what he mentioned about the learnings that will be carried into the next Xbox generation.

Didn’t Fable have some weird codename like Project Ergo or some s***?

Edit: It was Project Ego.

What are the core aspects of Fable?

I know it's an action RPG but what needs to be included in future installments to make it a Fable game?

Microsoft Is Interested in Acquiring Even More New Studios
Microsoft has an interest in studios that will help enrich Xbox Game Pass.

Microsoft isn't done acquiring studios, and according to Matt Booty, head of Microsoft Studios, they have interest in developers that are capable of bringing "content that is a little different to what our big AAA franchises can deliver."
Speaking to Gamesindusty.biz, Booty elaborated and said while they aren't trying to hit a "quota", they do want to expand the breadth of their titles, especially content that is geared more towards Xbox Game Pass subscribers.
"I don't want to seem like we're going out to fill a quota," Booty explains. "It's not about filling a spreadsheet by any means. We will, however, have an interest in studios right now that fit this criteria of 50 to 100 people, who are making games on a two to three year cadence, and have content that we think will be of interest to our Game Pass subscribers. That means content that is a little different to what our big AAA franchises can deliver"
"One of the fantastic things about Game Pass," he concludes, "is that it can support different kinds of content."
Their conversation goes further into Microsoft's other recently acquired studiosand one of the questions posed at Matt Booty was "Why Ninja Theory?"
"We started looking at studios that are built around creative leads and people. An amazing thing about Ninja Theory is that it is very clear that the studio orbits around ideas and creativity, and the characters, storytelling and settings really come first for them. That just meshes really well with our desire to provide our players, especially those in Game Pass, with content that is new, unique, has variety and sits outside of the stuff we are doing with our bigger franchises."
He also discussses how he will be visiting Ninja Theory in the near future and that he "was thinking about how the cliche would be to show up and say something like: 'Welcome to the family'. But I don't know if that sends the right message. It's not our intention to pull these studios in and start putting Xbox posters up everywhere. It's more about giving them the support so that they can focus entirely on making game, and to relieve some of the tension that I think exists for a studio of that size."
With this news, along with the recent announcement of their Xbox All Access program, Xbox Adaptive Controller, and the rumored next-gen console, codenamed "Scarlet", Microsoft shows no signs of slowing down and is, in our opinion, playing for tomorrow and playing for the win.

Xbox might not have the biggest userbase this generation, with PlayStation 4 consoles outnumbering Xbox One units over two to one, but the customers are ‘more hardcore’ than competitors. That’s what Aaron Greenberg, Senior Director for Global Product Marketing at Xbox, said in an interview with IGN Italia at Gamescom 2018.

"I notice the same and identical thing on my friends list and the data we have available suggests exactly that. Hardcore players, those who prefer the best gaming experience, have always been on our side, from the first Xbox to Xbox 360 and now with the Xbox One X. Looking at the numbers and results of the competition, we have a smaller installed base, but the attach rate and sales data for many games are much higher on Xbox. This is due to the fact that our userbase is made up of more hardcore gamers, and we return to the previous point: it is our relationship with the community that puts us in this position."

All those casuals on PS4 playing Bloodborne, Uncharted, Horizon, God of War etc...

XBox is for the hardcore lol

That's a function of install base. The more customers you have, the more you're tapping into the casual market. That's just how console sales work. PS4 has sold more and has tapped more into the casual market. Xbox is entitled to boast about having more "hardcore" gamers, but that's to be expected, if you've sold half what your competitor has. Greenberg is a PR guy and likes to spin. I don't blame him. But this is just a conceit.
