Major Nelson new podcast episode: 633: Phil Spencer stops by

https://majornelson.com/podcast/633-...ncer-stops-by/

Some Quotes:

"The real goal with the studios for me is to get a large enough studio bases where we can delight and surprise ourselves and our fans with games and it's on a regular cadence, so we're not always pinched to say 'okay, what can we announce' now we can say 'what do we have to announce and which of these things do we actually want to announce and what do we actually want to let sit and percolate a little longer?' ... It's been a while since we were in that position with our internal studios and I feel really good about that as Matt Booty and I are sitting down and look at all the different things that the teams are working on, the kind of capability we have now as a first party organisation - I do think it will continue to get bigger - what we have right now is just so different than the position we have been in the last 5 years, which is awesome."

On E3

This is gonna be a fun E3 for us. There obviously was some news about E3 in the fall and we had a discussion internally of 'should we go big, should we save some money?' - what does that mean? We decided 'no, we're going to do our thing.' We're going to go and be as big at E3 as we've ever been.

Phil Spencer is going big for E3 2019, teases unannounced games and xCloud progress

Are you excited for E3 2019?

Recently, Executive Vice President of Gaming Phil Spencer sat down with Director of Programming of Xbox Live Larry Hryb to discuss everything from Crackdown 3to plans for E3 2019. The podcast launched on January 25, 2019, and has energized many Xbox One owners since then.

The first major piece of news Spencer dropped was that Playground Games and Rare are working on new projects. It's unclear what they are, but we'll probably have to wait until E3 2019 or E3 2020 to find out. Rumor has it that Playground is developing Fable 4, but as with any such alleged "leak," take it with a grain of salt until the media receives official confirmation. Spencer said, "I saw what Playground is working on next, I saw what Rare is working on next, and their continued success with Sea of Thieves."

That wasn't all though. Spencer discussed plans for E3 2019 and how Xbox was going big this year, especially since Sony isn't attending the event. Spencer said the following.
This is going to be a fun E3 for us... we had a discussion internally. Should we go big? Should we save some money? No, we're going to do our thing and we're going to go and be as big at E3 as we've ever been. And I love that opportunity to be with our fans and the industry... We're still going through some of the discussions on how much long-term and how much near-term [games] do we talk about... I'm a proponent for being as transparent as can be... I feel really good about our plans... The content that we'll have will be great and we'll talk about our future. We'll talk more about what the Xbox brand means to us... We have millions of Xbox customers... we see them on a phone or another device... We want to make that possible.
It's great to see that Xbox is going all-out for E3 2019. Hopefully the next-generation console will be revealed alongside a slew of amazing titles like the rumored Fable 4.

Spencer went on to discuss Project xCloud, Microsoft's game streaming platform which is in active development right now. Spencer said the following.
One thing I was doing on holiday was that I was playing games on xCloud... We want to make sure we get it as right as we can. We want to test it... to anyone else on the service, I'm just playing... It'll be years before this is the primary way people are playing... but let's think about our future... We should also have these five to ten year views on where things can go.
Hopefully Xbox Insiders will be able to get their hands on Project xCloud soon.

Given the sheer scope of Microsoft — it's one of the most valuable companies in the world with many divisions — many gamers question the higher-up's commitment to the gaming division. Spencer cleared the air by saying "Satya Nadella and Amy Hood are quite supportive... Satya looked at me on the last [meeting] and said, 'Man, we're really in on content.' He trusts the team... He calls Game Pass the Netflix for games."

There are thousands of people working for Xbox around the world at more, and that figure is growing and growing. This interview made it clear that Microsoft has an important long-term vision for how Xbox fits into the company as a whole. Hopefully this commitment will continue to get strong in the future with a lot of great exclusives. How do you feel about this interview? What stood out to you the most? Let us know.

Yeah, I dunno. I think despite the efforts that Microsoft has made thusfar, many gamers and journalists are just waiting to be overly critical of all their efforts leading up to next gen. But I also think that's a mistake. Microsoft seems poised to dominate next gen - baring they play their cards right, which I think they will, near flawlessly. All the pieces are in place and they have a real plan to execute. At least in my opinion, I dont think Microsoft has ever looked more ready to shake up the gaming community than they do right now. Next generation should be very interesting indeed.

I miss the Phil that once said “we will be number one” but that was when he was under Moore :p but now he’s been granted great power, with an even great responsibility toward the future of gamers and Xbox

I think so as well, I think sooner or later the media will kill xbox. Just like how one of the magazines made a cover saying this is your console of choice.

I will never forget that, and also that what killed xbox in the media front.
Dont get me wrong because DON Matrick killed it.

Which magazine did this?

When have you ever seen the media dump on a console like that though?

But they deserved it and the console and games they delivered only proved they did even more. People are trying to erase history and act like the good things they have and are doing aren't the result of them failing.

No it wasn't the big bad medias fault. It was Microsoft's fault and we should be all grateful they got called on it and people ran out and bought PS4s because Xbox is way better off going forward. They should have been congratulated for having the more expensive console with the awful reveal, Kinect that nobody wanted, and a first party that was so bad we would have to wait until the next generation for them to fix it? I'm going to say no.

I loved the games they launched with. To each their own I guess?

And their isn't nothing wrong with that opinion. But what is wrong with a magazine having the opinion that Microsoft blew in their early months of their reveal (which just seems obvious) or that PS4 is the better console to own?

Yes we all know console wars are bad but that doesn't mean everyone has to pretend that everyone console and every game is equally good.

I'm not saying that they didn't deserve criticism, even very harsh criticism. I've just never seen a publication bury a console like that.

That is what I am getting that. You never seen ps2 got trashed when xbox came out. Matter of fact this is the first to be on a front cover like that and I have read many covers but this was over kill.

Now that MS is doing everything right till the next gen, I want to see if they are going to treat MS this time around.

This is why I pulled this picture and see how we approach until the release.

PS2 didn't deserve heavy criticism. X1 did.

Microsoft deserved the criticism it got, but endorsing on the cover no less of a major gaming magazine publication is seriously drawing a line in the sand. You pretty much choose your side with a statement like that on the cover. I dont care what Yankee says, that's pretty damned savage for them to do. I remember seeing the magazine around the time it released.

The PS4 was always the superior choice for informed gamers. I understand uninformed people and die hards buying the XBox One over the PS4, but to us it was never even close.

A vastly superior 1st party.
Better 3rd party support (Japan + user base)
$100 cheaper.
Much stronger worldwide brand recognition.

You add all that up and...of course things were going to turn out the way they did. The cover isn't controversial in the slightest.

So video game magazines can not say what console they think is the best buy?

Maybe they should stop reviewing games too. Someone might get the impression that they think one game is good and another isn't. That would be offensive.

That wouldnt stop anything. Most gamers today are such sheep they need a metacritic number to tell them if a game is any good. It's hopeless, really...
