EA shuts down Visceral

I may be over simplifying this but: can MS purchase this studio and save it? Make it a AAA dev house? Lawd knows they could use a good dev house with a solid track record...
I see no reason why they couldn't, but they wont.

This dev studio makes exactly the type of game Spencer doesn't want, cause they are not m'trans...I mean GaaS friendly.

Unless "the Spence" hires her to do single player for say Halo or Gears. 343 has the multiplayer locked that I feel not much needs to change for the next one, kinda like COD does in sticking to a very familiar formula.

Not unless. They are very different scenarios...but your's is far more likely than MS buying the whole studio.

Saw this on Neogaf, I posted it in another thread here as well. Honestly I believe this tweet simply because it wouldn't have made sense to do this if the game wasn't having significant development issues, it has already been in development for too long to just change course like this unless they saw no light at the end of the tunnel. Don't forget Respawn is also working on a 3rd person single player SW action game for EA, maybe they were too much alike? I don't know, I like many others don't like the trend of games as a service but I also don't want to jump to too many conclusions.

If they are shifting most of their employees to other studios I am not sure what they would get out of it. They don't really have great name recognition and they wouldn't get any IPs with it. They would just be buying a building.

Better off just starting your own studio and hiring Amy Hennig

They have one. (Well, if you round up.)

My favorites:

1. Horizon Zero Dawn
2. Yakuza 0
3. Hellblade (the only digital game listed; yay)
4. The Last of Us
5. Ratchet & Clank
6. Until Dawn
7. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection
8. Uncharted 4

All fantastic games.

I'd bet God of War, Death Stranding, Spiderman, and the Last of Us Part II all turn out to be really good games, too. Detroit and Days Gone will be good, but not really good.

Yeah, I posted that in the Star Wars pivots thread.

I guess maybe the game had issues.

More than anything, I don't understand the closure of the entire studio. I can only imagine what its like for a developer there, but it hurts to see this. Nobody wanted hardline, no one wanted dead space 3 the way it was made, no one wanted army of two three (different team but same name). Those games were still good (save that s*** army of two) but not what people wanted. Hardline especially was a huge mistake.

Feels bitter from the outside. Great dev forced by its overlords to make the most market deaf games for years, and then shuttered before the one everybody was anticipating actually releases.

Gotta replay dead space in their honor some time.

So I have heard. I tried the first one and found it too bland, then never looked back I guess.

Most people think the first is the weakest. I liked it, but then, I like this style game.

I'd suggest giving Uncharted 2 a try. Most people say that's their best game. I probably agree. 3 was good, too.

The Last of Us is really good, too. Those 2 games are in my all-time top 10 (UC2 and TLoU).

Visceral made Dante's Inferno. A nice God of War knock off.

If you haven't played it, find a cheap copy for $5 and play it on hard. The harder the difficulty the tougher the monsters, more monsters and some other stuff is adjusted in hard (I remember some flaming barrels or so).

The story part were told in a combo of in-game cut scenes and cartoony comic book animation.

GoW has better production values, but Dante runs at 60 fps, when GoW games at the time had shakier frame rate.

Uncharted sucks. The last 2 Tomb Raiders are far superior.

Last of Us is good, though.
I like the characters in Uncharted. The actual gameplay is serviceable. I remember enjoying 1 (despite control jankiness) and 2 (quite a bit), but 3 has been a slog so far. 4 is a huge improvement in gameplay and control, but definitely has pacing issues. I absolutely loved TLoU. What I love about ND is that they get consistently better, and they push technology- especially in character rendering and animation.

I agree that the Tomb Raider games are better (imo), but for different reasons. I do think CD are doing great things on their characters too...

Dead space 2 cost 60m to make and failed to make a profit.

I think the guy who said that said it failed to meet expectations, not make a profit. He said it cost 60m & sold 4m. 4mx60=240,000,000 so the game made somewhere around 4x it's budget, but like Square Enix, EA had unrealistic expectations....

Nope. Game companies don't get all that $60 bucks. If i recall. right they get. less than half.

That's not 4m at full price. Sold mostly cheap.

Yeah, for real. Although, I should stipulate that the breakdown was based on retail disc versions, which is fine for this discussion.

Have no clue how much they get for per digital sale.

Yep, you’re right. The Publishers get the lions share of the profits in most deals. Obviously with games like GTA where they develop and publish, they’re rolling in cash. But studios like respawn or visceral would get a percentage after the publisher has taken their cut.

Oh well EA owns ( I guess I should say owned now) visceral right? I guess I didn't see it as a publisher/ developer relationship, so much as they're one & the same. With GTA, obviously Take-Two is making a ton of money as from what I gather they're the ones who keep rockstar pumpin' out GTAonline content.
