Not sure if that's 9 million shipped or sold through and that X1's figure is shipped or sold through.

Nonetheless, almost 4 million lead is impressive.

Asked about bridging the gap between the two console's sales figures (Sony report 9 million units sold, Harrison says Xbox One's figure is "north of five million") he says: "Some analysts will suggest that we are less than 5% into this generation, so there is plenty of market opportunity ahead of us.

I think other sites would have picked up on this if it was accurate.

5 million Xbox Ones sold to consumers means that the console sold a decent amount in territories outside of the USA for the past 2-3 months when the system was a decent amount below 200K in US sales (especially last month) and I would be surprised if that was the case.

9 million units sold for the PS4 seems more believable, but at the same time the PS4 also saw a drop in sales in the USA (~200K for the last 2 months) so that would mean that other countries saw a rise in PS4 sales for the system to keep its average 1 million consoles sold worldwide per month (it hit 6 Million in March; and hit 7 Million in April).

Sony could be waiting for the 10 million milestone since that's a nice round number but at the same time, Sony did announce when the console reached 6 and 7 Million which are pretty odd numbers. Who knows though but overall I think there needs to be a better confirmation. The article simple says "Sony report..." without even making mention of where/who they got the information from.

Overall, these numbers would be more believable to me if it was "consoles shipped" rather than consoles actually sold to consumers.

14 million consoles and the first year of this gen isn't even over. That's some big numbers. I'll be adding to that PS4 number in August as well.

gee that is close to the 2:1 some shore would never happen.

People scoffed at the Sony forecast of 14 million PS4s in the first year, totally doable at this point time.

Didn't they say that many by the end of 2013? Remember them having a ridiculous number .

It doesn't get more legit than ibtimes.

Duck and cover.

Yes, laugh at my post even though I used stats to show why I feel that this news isn't accurate (for both consoles).

Nice to see that the quality of discussion here hasn't changed much.

So they would put out this news before any major gaming website and or PR from the companies themselves? Don't really believe it.

I doubt they'll sell another 5 million before November, but they'll probably hit it within 18 months of launch for sure. When the X1 launches in the other countries I'd also expect a few million sales fairly fast as well.

It's been close to 2:1 for a while. The Xbox One was at around 4 million (based on NPD stats alone) when Somy announced the PS4 hit the 7 million mark in worldwide sales.

9 months is only 5% into this generation? A 15-year-long generation? Noooo thank you, Mr. Harrison!

Realistically no, though I wouldn't put it past MS/Sony to lump holiday 14 sales into first year sales. It'll be pretty close to 14 million when all's said and done.

Here's an interesting number. If we say there has 15 million sales in total between the two consoles, that works out at a staggering 6700 (there about) consoles sold every single day from launch until today.

and console gaming is dead...

Some (many) appear to conviently forget that PS4 is available in 2/3rds more country's when it comes to figure counting.

Some (many) appear to also conveniently forget that X1 has been readily available in its major countries already. The remaining countries won't make that much of a difference as the ones released already now.

Knew it...

Well, they announced 7 million sold through back in April, so I'm sure they're at higher than 7 million now. They were doing nearly a million a month before the last announcement, so unless sales dropped off a cliff (which admittedly they did in some places, e.g., Japan), being at 9 million right now wouldn't be out of reach.

Sort of like many conviently forget that many shops have been selling xbones in countries where it hasn't launched yet Since last year.

Edit nevermind Naty beat me to it ;)

Some people conveniently forget that most of these countries would post insignificant numbers anyway. There's a reason why MS hasn't launch in those countries yet, they're not really countries where sales would show anything decent.

Game journalist.

Ah, okay. He may be wrong. Sony's already announced 7 million sold through in middle of April. It's been almost 2.5 months now, pretty sure it's gone up since then. If anything, the 9 million may be shipped through numbers with sold through just behind.
