Elex

Andy I'm loving these snapshot tidbits you're giving of the game. I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop and we get a quote from you like, " Awful game is made me rage angry, do not buy but if you do, dose with bleach then set ablaze."

I'm 3 or 4 hrs in now, still enjoying it.

+ world exploration
+ questing
+ jetpack
+ visuals/environments
+ old RPG systems
+ level of interactivity in world

- animation, incl. facial
- voice acting and dialog
- framerate problems
- it takes a while to get going
- it's a time sink

My jetpack is getting a lot of use.

Cool. It looks interesting. I hope they try and improve the performance at least. Might pick it up when the price goes down.

I love a good jank game once in a while. Most recent one I can remember is The Technomancer, and Bound by Flame before that. The good thing about those Spiders games is they are only like $40. I'd be more interested in this one after a price drop.

Continuing to enjoy it. I feel drawn towards it, for whatever perverse reason. PB makes unique games. I guess I'm in the mood for one.

This game is hard!

Hunted down a piece of armor, but my Constitution is too low. gah.

Lots of content. If I play through, it'll easily be 100 hrs.

This actually looks interesting. Think I might give it a go down the line. I don’t mind rough games I actually enjoyed some of Two Worlds back in the day (I thought the sequel Two Worlds II was pretty damn good). If a game keeps me playing and I’m having fun I can overlook some issues. Thanks for the info Andy.

I'm hearing this is PB's best work since Gothic 2.

Here is a description of Elex's early game, from a lead designer on another forum:

"You will die a lot.... Skyrim it’s not. Forget about killing dragons. The only bird you can kill at this point is a mutated chicken (which will f*** you up faster than you can say Dovahkiin if you aren't quick enough), so if you like challenging combat and slow progression, this game is for you."

That guy's post is a good read on the game, btw.

In Witcher 3 or Horizon, I felt strong early on. Not here. I'm a wimp.

p.s. Combat looks awful, but there's a system to it. Hard to get the timing down.

Here's another excerpt from that guy's post, to give you a sense of the game:

"A long time ago Piranha Bytes released a game called Gothic, featuring a very different approach to game design:

- Instead of starting you off as a mighty Chosen One, you played the role of a convict with a very short life expectancy in a world where nearly every living thing could kill you in two hits
- Factions played a large role in the game, but instead of blessing a local faction with your attention, you had to convince a faction of your choice that you’re worthy and work your way up the ladder
- Somehow PB managed to conjure a living & breathing world which became an instantly recognizable trademark
- The first half of the game (until the faction choice) was amazingly non-linear and full of choices and multiple solutions, which were still a rarity in 2001."

That's the style in Elex, too.

Been watching this on twitch. The open world looks absolutely amazing and so unique. I have decided I will purchasing this game once I have been paid. I want to support the devs vision.

I feel good about supporting the game.

I feel I've got my money's worth, too. This is a game I'll be playing for months, I'm sure.

I'm just having fun exploring the world -- even though half the time, I am running for my life. I've got those mutated chickens under control, though, lol.

Good stuff Andy. I got to say you got pretty wide leniency for gaming.

I wish I could enjoy janky games like the old PC gaming days where it was hit and miss whether someone ran great, or if your PC was outdated, or it was just a crappy made game.

For me, I've really pigeon holed my gaming states in the last 10 years to CoD, hockey, Bethesda RPGs, numerous indy games, Diablo and some Forza here and there. There's some more, but I don't know when it happened, but 60 fps gaming is very important for me in most types of games.... especially fast paced games.

It's not for everyone, that's for sure. If you are drawn to a game like this, you know; if you're not drawn, it's not for you.

It does take a lot of patience. Many hours of weakness and getting killed, in the beginning.

But moment-to-moment, it's fun.

Destiny 2 next week on PC and I feel like holding off on the game and getting this instead lol. Going in on Destiny with a friend though so not sure he would appreciate it. I have it on my Steam wishlist in case it goes on sale at some point. Screen shots for it look really good though.

Loved the first Risen...I will get this game but a little later,my backlog is still big and AC and Wolfenstein will come first. The game is very hard at first and its not the best looking but I love me some Pyrhana Bytes eurojank lol...

We should have a Eurojank thread. Any other devs besides these guys and Spiders you could put on the list? Spiders has a new game coming out next year called Greedfall that looks pretty cool.

Maybe the Two Worlds guys, Reality Pump.

They just released TWII: Call of the Tennebrae. Which is kind of weird, since TWII came out in 2010.

That Spiders trailer looked good. I'll keep an eye out for it.

I changed my mind on Elex. It's ok, but I just don't have the time for it. I want to play tighter and more focused games.

I'm going to sell my copy on ebay. I went to Gamestop and they offered $14 for it. $14! Fak.

I got tired of the long, extended period where you have no power and nearly everything can kill you. I just didn't have the patience for the long slog. The combat got to me, too -- the goofy timing, the fact that the game explains nothing. And of course, the dialog and story are so awkwardly done that I am not immersed on that level at all, just sort of befuddled.

There's a whole complex world here to unravel, and I guess I just don't want to spend the time to do it. The game doesn't help you at all, and I guess that's part of it's charm, but it also makes it confusing.

I enjoyed the 5 or so hours of the game I played, but I don't have the time for a game like this right now. It requires too much patience and work.

They should offer some sort of trade-in value protection policy. Pay an extra $10 and guarantee trade-in value of at least 70% the retail price for 6 months or something.

Yeah, a deal like that would be nice.

Well, I took the bullet on this one. Someone else get the next Eurojank RPG.

There's that other shoe dropping.

I don't expect this game to sell well at all... I expect half price on Thanksgiving Thursday, or Black Friday
