Short Background: I know someone with an old computer that I believe has a bad hard drive.

I could probably tinker with the hardware, but that is time consuming, and I'm more of a software solution person. My idea to make this old DELL a functioning computer quickly is to just give it a USB based OS.

So far, I've gone with CrunchBang Linux which is based on Debian. I think it's lean on resources while giving functionality. I like that it can play Flash video like Youtube out-of-the-box. I have installed on a 4 GB USB and I'm trying to get a Panel on it. (It's OpenBox with no start button)

I did consider Damn Small Linux which seemed very small and fast, but thought it lacked functionality and used an old FireFox.

I have tried Knoppix, but I think it has unnecessary clutter and I don't care for the Compiz feature that much.

I might also consider trying Linux-Lite
