I miss the days of inserting a brand new game and playing it in less than 30 seconds.

Went to my parents house this past weekend and took the SNES along. Played some NHLPA 93 and Madden 95 with my brother since we used to play those games all the time. Also had Super Mario All-Stars so his wife played the original Mario like the good days. Finally, threw in Jurassic Park to show my dad since we played through that together as well. Good nostalgia trip for sure. That last panel is so true.

I don't really suffer from gaming nostalgia. Honestly, going back and playing old games only makes me appreciate more how much games have improved over the years. I'll take Batman Arkham Knight, Forza Horizons etc over old school games all day every day.

I miss how the industry was. Microtransactions, DLC, pay to win, pre-order bonus, 20 different release versions for collectors edition, etc. Kind of like what WithGravy was saying too. Just put the game in, play it, beat it or play more with friends, move on. No BS.

Yeah 50 bucks for a 30 minute game, lol. Fighting games with Eight characters. Games with bugs that stay forever... Oh yeah, much better, lol.

Sure it's more complicated now, but it shocks me how much content even base games come with standard compared to old games, and for the same price (or even less depending on the game). Now you can expand what you started with... or not. Bugs can be fixed. Sure, there are negatives, but they are heavily outweighed, imo.

Now-a-days, I can order my game online and it will download while I'm at work. I don't even need to put the game "in". I can go back to old games for maybe half an hour before I'm ready for modern gaming.

Yeah, I'll take the new s***. Nostalgia goggles don't fit me anymore.

Nostalgia is magnified after smoking weed. I remember last time I smoked a joint and re played the original Half Life.

THAT s*** took me back and it was uh-may-zing.

Not sure you were in same console generation as me? SuperNes, N64, ps1, ps2 offered complete experiences on day 1. I don't even remember large bugs on those games in the old days. Know why? They knew they had to have a complete product out on launch. Not release game X by date X for stockholders and we'll just patch it later. Preorder bonuses, microtransactions and early DLC can all go to hell too. Back then there were large "expansions", not tiny little bite sized content to nickel and dime us.

I've been around a bit longer, lol. You probably don't remember that stuff because it wasn't as magnified, and we were far more forgiving back then. Not to mention being younger and less jaded. And yes, there is waaaaay more content in your average games now (barring some older PC games, anyway). Just look at what you get in Quake compared to FarCry 4. It's not even close. Sometimes there is too much content.

If you need a reminder, you should watch some Angry Video Game Nerd vids.

Preorder bonuses, microtransactions and DLC exist because games are orders of magnitude more expensive to make and games still cost the same (even less if you count inflation). Gamers demand more, that's the difference. Do couldn't get away with a five level side-scroller for 60 bucks today. A 10 dollar beat-em-up today will give you a deeper, longer game than Streets of Rage or Final Fight.

Patching is necessary because new games are so much more complex. More moving parts with more sophisticated coding and physics to get you into trouble or to throw obscure, hard to find errors. You will still find horrid framerates, buggy sprites, and game breaking bugs in old games. You just couldn't fix 'em.

The bugs that come with a lot of current games are annoying as f***! (and we both experienced it Frozpot with Halo MCC). At the same time, like he said, the fix eventually came because the current systems have the ability to patch via DL content. Also, the older games, lets be honest, weren't as complex and didn't have online modes. That being said, new games really need to Beta...MCC proved that....you honestly, HAVE TO, or you risk really pissing off the gamers by releasing a game with a ton of bugs.

I have a friend who is very anti-gaming systems becoming more than gaming systems...he doesn't want voice controls, apps, cable pass through, game DVR, etc...he wants purity in his console.....I say F That....seriously...I love the advancements that have come with the newer generations of game consoles......DVR, Record That, Screenshots, Watch TV, downloadable games (something as a cheap ass gamer I was super resistant to initially but have now moved to exclusively to the point that I need to get an external hdd), game patches, online gaming, voice chat, voice messages, streaming video, etc......

The car I owned when I was 21 and was single and getting laid a lot and smoking lots of weed and not having to go to work wasn't better than the car I own now and have to do all that s***. Nostalgia glasses FTMFL

Let's not forget that if you go digital, you don't even have to "insert" a game. I just "go t0" it :D

It's not going to get simpler, and there are still growing pains, but I'm good with where we are headed. My experiences are 95% positive and we are awash in games.

Old games had no bugs/ games where higher quality out of the box, people didn't compare graphics, it was all about the gameplay, there was more content back then- these are all untrue, rose-tinted statements.

I concur with your concurance, then again, I drank 3 IPAs at lunch.

That depends on the game for me. Something like Super Ghouls and Ghosts will alway be a classic to me in terms of fun and challenge. I can still play Mario 64 and enjoy the hell out of it too.

You probably never really appreciated those games then. I haven't let nostalgia ruin gaming for me but today's games are nothing like yesterday's games. Everything back then felt new and original and felt like it had a purpose. Games were more of a challenge. There's plenty of great games today but i don't think they really compare to the true classics. You can't beat the original, in any form of entertainment.

Just because I realize that the current games are better doesn't mean I didn't appreciate them. I played the original Need for Speed to death on my 3DO in college. That doesn't mean it can compete with Forza Horizons 2. If I had my choice between playing either of those two games I would choose FH2 because its bigger and better than the game that was released 20 years ago.

In just about every genre, especially shooters and sports games, the games have made serious improvements and advancements over the years. Never mind all the open world games that just couldn't exist in the early days due to limitations of the hardware. I was a kid when games started coming out so I basically have been playing my entire life. The old school games were great for their time and I appreciate that we're where we are now because of their innovation. But honestly, I think todays games are just way better because there is so much more that can be done by the developers.

People who have this glass half empty feeling about current games are really more nostalgic for a by gone time in their lives, when they probable had more time to enjoy games IMO.

I'll take now over then by a mile. The NES is looked upon very favorably, but I still remember playing truly AWFUL games for $70, having to blow on the cartridges and positioning them through the slot like a f*cking heart surgeon to get them going, being afraid to stand-up due to the game freezing from small vibrations going through the floor, losing hours of time due to the lack of save points/autosaves, etc. Lets not even discuss the online aspect since it wasn't even really in existence until the PS2/XB1 era.

The other thing is that while there were fewer bugs back then the games were FAR less complex. There may have not been that many game breaking issues, but slowdown/freezes/screen tearing/etc. were all fairly common.

Where is the opposing comic that illustrates how far gaming has come in the last 25 years?

It's been delayed until 2017, but it'll be in 1080p and 60fps so it'll be the truly definitive version of opinion.

Can we have a single thread that doesn't point out how s*** the Order:1886 is, please!?!?!

.... :p

I do hate dlc. One time I paid $4.95 for skins in Borderlands 2, thinking it was the new class... Nope, just Like the trash after a mass circumcision, I had useless skins all over my hard drive.
