God of War

I don't preorder anymore. If I do, it's like a week or two before the game comes out.
Right, plus with delays as they tend to be with games these days why bother until a day or two before? You can still get a reduced price via Amazon or Best Buy even if it's just a few days prior to release.

I find this extremely surprising, and I’m looking forward to it:

Some of that could be fan-base moving on. Games, and people age. At some point Halo won't be a thing anymore either. Not because they are bad games, but people just move on.

Mario lives because it changes with the times. I think they are making God of War live because they too are changing with times, with the new style of game play. It might catch on nicely.

I haven't pre-ordered because pre-ordering more than a day out, digitally, is useless. And we know that games are becoming more and more digital, so the likelyhood of worrying about running out of physical copies will be a thing of the past.

Not surprising at all. Once a release date is announced then that’ll change. In other news Deathstranding pre-orders are "soft". :surprise:

Halo is still played by lots of people though. It did change as well (for the better from a control standpoint, imo). Personally, as a huge Halo fan, they need to keep evolving. Not in gun-play and movement, mind- they have that nailed, but in narrative style.

It was a stupid thing for him to tweet out, there is no release date and there really has been very little in the way of media released for the game. We've gotten a decent look at one gameplay section, a short story trailer a 1 minute combat video and a few internet videos talking about the lore. There has been virtually no real marketing for the game yet, add to that the fact that there isn't a collectors edition or anything special announced and what's the point in pre-ordering yet? I'm going to eventually but I only buy digital now so I'm in no rush to hand over $60 for a game when I don't know how many months it'll be before I can play it. I can't wait for the game but I knew when I saw this tweet yesterday that it was nothing but clickbait.

Halo changed with each iteration. But the biggest changes were 2, reach and 5 with their follow ups being more iterative on their immediate predecessors.

Right. It currently is still popular. I just said at some point that will change. I loved Halo 5. I would say Halo 5 and Halo CE are my favorites.

Exactly.

Mario lives because it changes with the times.

Plus the fact that Mario is basically the godfather character of gaming. Watched a documentary on gaming not long ago and people said one of the big reasons why Nintendo succeeded where Atari didn't is because they understood the value of characters.

Something Sony also clearly sees. There's no one mascot for Sony, but they have solid characters across their games. Whether it was Snake, Drake, Joel or Ellie. Microsoft has Chief and they really didn't focus on him in Halo 5.. point and case for that game's reception.

I reckon they will have a big reveal in January if it is coming out in March when they are much closer to the release date. They have a 20 hour game and they have showed one 10 minute footage, a 4 minute trailer and 2 minute gameplay footage. Something doesn't add up though, Horizon coming out in February last year by this time had an E3 2015 trailer and gameplay, a release date trailer, a new gameplay at E3, a massive GI coverage with new footage and a trailer at PSX plus the game was playable. Either Santa Monica are hiding a lot of this game till early next year for a gigantic preview or it is not coming out in early 2018.

Can't judge the status of a game based on a totally different and unrelated game's previous marketing schedule...

They said early 2018 even at PSX so until that changes I look for this to be out before E3. This isn't a new IP but it's basically a reboot and they probably want to keep a lot of the stuff secret since they can't do a 10 minute stage demo without giving some story elements away like Horizon ZD could. Plus they are likely still refining a lot of things since the game has been changed so much and would rather show it off more when things are working how they should.

Sea of Thieves and Far Cry 5 are coming the last week of March and had their dates announced a month ago, if this were the same they would have known and announced a month ago too. MLB The Show 2018 has been down for the same last week of March since October

It's probably last part of May...but if Red Dead is early June....I could see it moving to July.

Would be cool if the combat changes as the game progresses, with the thinking that Kratos gets killed off in this game.

Not sure that pre-orders would give a good read on this game since it lacks a concrete release date. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this game delayed to later in the year.

Hoping it’s successful. What Sony is doing with God of War is similar to what we saw with the Tomb Raider and Resident Evil franchises. Those franchises had success. It’s what needs to happen with Halo and Gears for those franchises to live on. I’d like to see more franchises take this approach to sequels. Reinvent and reboot.

The thing I believe is working against GOW is the kid. Ellie worked in Last of Us due to the emotional bond and tragedies shared. This kid seems generic and doesn’t really fit.

They announced GoW 3 release date in Jan and it came out in March. Considering Game informer is covering GoW all month I have a feeling we will know the released date by the end of jan or pretty damn soon.

The game is more about Kratos struggle as a father and fight to control his anger he fits perfectly into the story and what they are trying to accomplish.

Most video game characters smell like those people on survivor. And I guarantee it ain't pleasant.

It was not announced for Q1; it was said to be releasing in "early 2018," whatever that means. There was a supposed leak of some Chilean website suggesting a March 22 release, but that was pulled quickly.

It's an ambitious game. Sony will let them work on it until it is in good shape. I don't particularly care when it comes out, as long as it's sometime this year.

Sounding great to me...

God of War Creative Director Says He Was Brought on to "Break the Rules"

http://comicbook.com/gaming/2018/01/09/god-of-war-creative-director-/

Anyone with eyes can see that the God of War franchise took a dramatic turn in both the lore of the game, and with many of the title's mechanics. Most notably was the shift in mythology and the welcome addition seeing Kratos on a new role: a father. Apparently this new shift was because Sony didn't want another God of War, so the team had to shake things up a bit to make the pitch worth supporting. Enter creative director Cory Barlog who was brought in for just that purpose, to 'break the rules' as he put it.

Both Cory Barlog and Santa Monica Studio Head Shannon Studstill took a moment to talk about the franchise as a whole and how it came to be what we will be seeing later this year (hopefully):

“I think you need to know the lineage. It’s a very deep storyline, and bringing in someone that understands that history is the respect the franchise deserves. We don’t want somebody that thinks they know the best next step, but [someone who] really truly embodies it,” Studstill said. “Cory, of course, with God of War 2, had that passion.”

Barlog himself has been doing the media circuit, including this hilarious video where he answered 102 rapid fire questions (where things got weird, fast). In addition to Studstill's commentary, Barlog added on: “Gotta know the rules to break the rules. We have to rip literally all of the walls down." This also explains why many mechanics from previous games have been left in the dust, and also why there is no jump feature.

It looks like this new direction is paying off however, because fans can't wait to see how the new mythology works out regarding their favourite god slayer. So much so, that talks of bringing the franchise over to even more mythologies are on the table - including both Egyptian and Mayan timelines.

Barlog finishes off in his interview by saying:

“We have a diversity of memorable moments that is far greater than we’ve had in previous games. The memorable moments range from a single line spoken by one character who spoke strongly to them, to an epic moment that is sort of bombastic, to a moment that we didn’t even think was that epic, but they perceived it as being this most amazing epic thing.”

Cory Barlog said GoW is in it's polishing stages at PSX. I don't see it taking that long to finish GoW. The complicated stuff is over with. What's left now is ironing out bugs and framerate. There's a good chance we have a release date in June or early Feb with all the news coming lately.

Just a little look back at how late God of War 3's release date got announced for those trying to argue against me.

Release Date Announced: January 28, 2010.
Released: March 16, 2010.

To prove my point further it's Jan 13, 2018 and my link confirms the new GoW date will be announced soon.

So in conclusion Andy and Sasquatch are making random assumptions based on alternative facts and not the actual facts.
