Google game console ‘Coming Soon’

The rumour of Google’s game console have been surfacing as of late. Insider reports claim that Google’s inside project is called ‘The Nexus Orbit’ and a recent U.S trademark (#2100986) has been made to secure the name Orbit for ‘Video and Computer use’. All signs point towards a game console, or could it be just a terrible misunderstanding?

Rumours first started to spread when Google recently patented a video game related trademark with ‘intent to use’, so it could show that in the near future they could be releasing some sort of game console like Sony or Nintendo or could it be Google’s take on the table-top streaming device, with gaming as an add-on instead of the main feature, such as Amazon’s Fire TV. Also, some experts think that Google is toning down its Google+ service on PC’s to try to develop it for console usage, such as MiiVerse or PsPLUS. It could be also a similar feature to the share button where you could share your footage and screenshots to your friends or put it in your circles.

Next thing up is Google’s purchase of ergonomic company ‘ B Comfortable ‘ which co-designed the MOGA iOS game controllers. This could also point to Google designing a controller for its Orbit system, whatever it may be. Some people could argue that it could be designing the remote for the table top device, but what much design do you need for a simple remote? I could design one right now, and I’m sure you could to. So the evidence here clearly points to some sort of a device whether it be gaming or a stream service. One last thing to debunk about the stream device is that Google already has one. The Chrome Cast (You can check out my article on that too right here on GoogleQuake). So what purpose would another one be, just to cut it’s audience even more?

So considering the aforementioned points, what could it be? A slightly more focused table-top system with gaming as more of a priority? Or a possible fully dedicated game console, in which seeing Google’s history will probably be mid-end device with a low price. So what do you think? Post your thoughts below and thanks for reading.

Android-based console doesn't sound to bad as long as it's small and portable.

Those are your small portable android gaming systems :)
If you are one of those who thinks cell phones are replacing console gaming, then to each their own. Console gaming is here to stay.

Hell no. All I'm saying is if its gonna be some in between system like the Ouya or the Shield why bother? A decent cell phone or tablet would give the same experience save for playing on a TV.

Yeah starting up small getting their feet wet acclimating to the space. Get some devs interested for next gen when they're all in. MS, amazon, android, apple, sony... I wonder who will drop out 1st? How much is each willing to invest into a smaller marketshare? Who has the deeper pockets to go into the further rounds?

That's the whole point of a home console. You can play it on the TV and with an actual controller. You can play actual controller games on the TV with a processor far superior to a small touchscreen cell phone. How is that the same experience? It really does sound like you are just downtalking home game consoles with this "you can play it on a cell phone" deal.

I'll be shocked if this turns into something worthwhile.

I think he is referring to the proposed android-based amazon console.

Should be interesting to see. Hopefully they have more ambitious plans beyond just being an expensive or cheaper version Ouya. If this is an actual console, it's gonna need some serious firepower to really compete.

No I'm not downplaying home consoles at all, you'll never get the experience of a WiiU/XB1/PS4, or even last gen on an mobile device. If Google is to launch a home console along the lines of the Ouya though, the target audience is mainly casuals, the types to "game" on a cell/tablet, who could care less about doing so on the big screen w/a controller. If the Ouya is any indication of the markets appetite for a entry level console of that type it's not to promising.

Why are you comparing multi-billion dollar Google to a kickstarter project? That makes so little sense. That's not a rhetorical question. Seriously what demon took over and brought you to compare multi-billion dollar Google to a kickstarter project?

If they're both going to run android and be of a lower end price point they're targeting the same audience. Like you said, Google is a multi billion dollar company, so they could make a better go of it than Ouya. Even if they target a higher end spec, say like the Nvidia Shield it'll still be a hard road to travel.

That's not the question I asked. I'm not asking what their audience is. I'm asking why are you comparing multi-billion dollar Google to a kickstarter project to show any indication to the success or failure of Google's to-be new console.

The target audience is why I compared the two, doesn't matter that one was kickstarter funded and one is backed by a multi billion dollar corp. Google could dump 10's of millions of dollars into their console and still not come away a success.

That is if Google targets the casual end of gaming with their box

It doesn't matter that Ouya was created by some nobody company relying on kickstarter to fund the product? You are as wrong as they come. You are talking complete crazy, and you are doing it on purpose. It's like you deliberately ignore the great success of NVIDIA Shield in favor of comparing to a failed kickstarter because you simply want to hate on a product that clearly does not have your particular interest. You've made your aim clear.

I'm not hating on the product at all, heck we don't even know what it is at this point. How am I crazy, big money doesn't always equal big success. I didn't ignore the Shield, I mentioned it in one of my prior posts, though I wouldn't call it a "great success".

And of course, you have no basis for why you claim NVIDIA Shield isn't a "great success" other than your hatred for Google. Meanwhile, NVIDIA claims it's a hit and that they are now scrambling to meet demand.

Where are you getting this hatred of Google from? I'm just talking the realities of releasing a system, I wish them all the luck, the more competition the better.

Care to post any sales figures for the Shield, proving its a "great success"? It may be a successful proof of concept, however, not a sales success.

Why not use Chromecast in someway that would allow your game from your phone to be streamed onto the TV?

I have a feeling this is not a console.

You mean you don't know the sales numbers, and yet you insist on saying that it's not a great success? Tisk tisk. Why am I not surprised.

I never said it wasnt a success, I said it may not be a sales success. If your so positive of its success please feel free to post sales figures.

Didn't people said console gaming is dying, yet so many new comers are jumping in, Steam Machines, Amazon Fire (come to think of it, a rather poor choice of name, imagine if the Amazon forest caught fire), & now a google console.

If Google jumped in, Apple may do so as well.

Yeah console gaming has been "dying" for a while supposedly. There has been a fair share of companies jumping in, supposedly Google now and I think Apple has rumored to have been working on something for a while now too

Success = sales success. Same thing. That aside, you are flat out claiming the sales weren't very successful when you don't even know the first thing about the sales of the product. That's all kinds of wrong.

So then what are the sales figures then?

Well couldn't so many people jumping in be a sign that it is dying? I'm not saying I agree either way that it is, but these essentially powerhouse companies (Google, Amazon) could be seeing that it is dying (in their opinions) and are taking advantage of that to jump in and shake things up.

Just a thought.
