Gran Turismo 5 and Resistance servers are shutting down

Sony has a Christmas present for all Gran Turismo 5 and Resistance fans out there, on the 20th of May next year the servers for Gran Turismo 5 are being shut down and all online functionality will be removed from the title.

Resistance isn’t as lucky with the servers for all three of their games being killed on the 28th March and as with GT5 that means you can no longer play online.

However it gets worse. For the fans of MAG and SOCOM your games will become totally useless on the 28th of January 2014 when their servers are shut down as they don’t have a single player mode at all.

The full list of titles being killed can be found on the official PlayStation blog

As of 20 May 2014 you will no longer able to use the online features of the following game:
PlayStation 3
Gran Turismo 5

As of 28 March 2014 you will no longer able to use the online features of the following games:
PlayStation 3
Resistance: Fall of Man
Resistance 2
Resistance 3

As of 26 November 2013 you will no longer able to use the online features of the following game:
PlayStation 3
PAIN

As of 28 January 2014 you will no longer be able to use the online features of the following games:
PlayStation 3
MAG
SOCOM: Special Forces
SOCOM: Confrontation
After these dates, you will still be able to play these games offline, with the exception of MAG and SOCOM: Confrontation, which do not have offline modes.

All these games are joining a depressing group of previously retired titles

PlayStation 3
Calling All Cars
The Eye of Judgment
FORMULA ONE CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
MotorStorm
MotorStorm Pacific Rift
Race Driver: GRID
The Lord of The Rings: Conquest
White Knight Chronicles
White Knight Chronicles II

Honestly I’m quite surprised at GT5, it took forever to make and as soon as GT6 lands they announce they are turning GT5 off, that doesn’t sound like a company that is in it for the gamers as they are constantly saying at the moment.

This is preciously the reason why I'm scare to purchase any games that are online-only (namely Imposter Batman.) Buy game; play online for couple of years; suddenly online off; game=useless.

I never understood why company wants to pull the plugs for online. Can't they leave it there? Or does it cost money for them to keep online on all-time?

I guess the servers costs and paying for people to maintain them aren't worth servicing the online community (online community has dwindled to almost nobody playing).

Although axing GT5 is a head scratcher. Probably a tactic to get people to buy GT6.

Never the less, looks like Sony is trying to sneak this news in quietly during the holidays in hopes nobody notices. I guess Sony employees were all on holidays Dec 25, so the piece was released the day after.

Welcome to the downside of old school "dedicated servers"
As much hate Activision gets, at least they keep their servers on for eons. I believe even CoD 4 is still active (not sure about their old WWII games)

Interestingly, MAG and Socom are getting axed too. Online only games. I wonder if Sony is still going to sell those PS3 controller + game bundles, which I've seen include MAG or Socom.

Gran Turismo has gone down hill lately. The game is is all about quantity and not quality. Forza may have less cars but it destroys it in almost every way from a quality standpoint. I don't think many people care if the servers go down for these games.

That's messed up. They take 5 years to make Gran Turismo 5 and they shut the online servers down in less than half that time? I guess there's always GT6 for PS fans.

So much fail here with GT5, don't even know where to start.

I'm curious if games like MAG, SOCOM and others are still sold at retail even though half their stated features are or will be cut off.

I know that EA games have a disclaimer on the back of the box that helps them skate by their server terminations. Someone posted that in a forum once. Sucks. As for SOCOM/MAG, not sure....and I can't look. Sold all my PS3 games.
