Gran Turismo Sport, the newly announced PlayStation 4 driving simulation from Polyphony Digital, is not Gran Turismo 7, Sony has confirmed - though Sony insists it'll be more substantial than the Prologue games that have prefaced mainline Gran Turismo games in the past.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's president and CEO Jim Ryan provided some clarity in the wake of Sony's conference at Paris Games Week.

"We're not announcing Gran Turismo 7 at this stage," he told Eurogamer.

"Fair to say [series director Kazunori Yamauchi] has been making these games for some considerable time now. I think it's reasonable to assume that something else might come down the road. Is it a Prologue? No, I think it'll be more than that."

"The old days, when the games were offline, the experience was defined by what's on the disc. You had a distinction between a Prologue and a full GT, it was very stark. When the game becomes more of an online connected experience, that distinction blurs. This will be much more than a Prologue type experience."

Details on Gran Turismo Sport were thin during the announcement last night, with Yamauchi choosing to focus on the partnership with the FIA that was announced last year.

Some more tidbits have emerged since, with dedicated Gran Turismo site GTPlanet revealing that Gran Turismo Sport will have three separate modes, with 'Campaign', 'Sports Mode' and 'Arcade Mode' all featuring. There'll be a focus on online racing, with virtual championships that will be officially recognised by motorsport's governing body the FIA.

Yamauchi also revealed there would be a beta early next year, which would suggest people will be playing it sooner rather than later. Given Yamauchi's past of making promises he can't quite hold to, is Sony confident people will be playing Gran Turismo on PS4 next year?

"Yeah, we're confident," said Ryan. "There's nothing at this stage to suggest that he won't deliver on what was said. He's obviously been working on this for a while now, it's been a while since GT6 released, so we're confident."

I am looking forward to this one as well. Lots of good racing games this gen.

So this is not a fully fledged title? Seems like a cross between a glorified demo and a game with too little content to justify the full game price tag.

Will be interesting to see if they finally update the sound to at least 20th century standards.

That must be one of the standard cars. We still have Premium cars to look forward to.

Here is the premium cockpit view. No longer just a black panel..

If FIA is involved I'm really hoping WEC is included with full roster. Finally can drive as McDreamy.

That's disappointing :(

After all this time, that's all they got? GT 7, 2018...

So basically we are getting a big demo in 2016, at best... while they work on the full game.

Great. This series continues to disappoint..

127 cars, is that all? I hope Valliance doesn't try and call this a A A A game :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

I hope they have a lot of footage at E3 and the months after.

It looks pretty nice.

I just hope they finally upgrade the audio. Gran Turismo has always looked good visually, but has lacked in other areas.

No question. Their presentation has pretty much always sucked except for GT3. Never understood how they regressed in that regard after that.

Good thing it looks like this rebranding may provide a more modern presentation finally.

Obviously photomode. I'll reserved judgement.

Gran Turismo Sport, however, looks, sounds and plays just like Gran Turismo 6 on the Playstation 3.

From the article. Not what I wanted to hear.

Doesn't look bad, but a couple clips have some really bad track details.

I really can't believe they just started showing photomode pics... I find it hard to believe that this is all they've been able to do in all this time. That looks like quite the robust photomode though...

Not impressed by the visuals at all, then again I rarely ever am by GT games. They put everything into the cars and not enough effort goes into the environments. That's what I liked so much about Driveclub's visuals, the tracks looked amazing. I'm sure this is a 60 fps game but still this game looks sub par, especially as an exclusive.

This game was never going to look as good as Driveclub due to the 60fps but I have to say the lighting is superb.

Looks aren't everything. If it has 60fps and great driving physics = win. There's always other racing games for looks on both platforms.

Ridiculous. Less cars than Forza 5 and that was a launch game. Turn 10 will be topping 600 next year.

Maybe GT7 will be more robust if it ever comes out.

I think with every gen, there are developers who can't scale for next gen; Factor 5, Free Radical, Silicon Knights, Zipper Studios, Liverpool, FASA, Lionhead, Evolution Studios. They take too long or put out a sub-par release with little content for such protracted development periods.

Polyphony Digital is on borrowed time.

I want Naughty Dog to make an offroad game in Jeeps using the UC4 maps. Open them up, create races where you may have to get out of your Jeep and use a winch, have rockslides, missing bridges to jump over rivers, and whatnot. Who was it that made that old PS2 game Smugglers Run? Combine some of that gameplay into with missions to pick up and deliver packages, have bandits you have to blow up cars/bikes and even some gunplay. What a game that would be!
