If most criminal obtain their guns through illegal means (off the street and straw sales), what do you think is the solution to decreasing gun violence?

Journalist and camera man just killed while doing a live interview on U.S tv by an ex employee who ever filmed it worth a phone.

Terrible.

The lady being interviewed was also shot and is currently in surgery apparently and it seems the gunman had killed himself.

Probably best no one links the killers video which is on the web.

Reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27. The only names that people need to know IMO.

Gunman was a former employee who appears to have held a 2 year grudge on the victims with the women supposedly making racist remarks to him.

Crazy people. We average a mass shooting a day so I've grown numb to them.

This guy was absolutely crazy, no sane person would do something like this. I keep seeing people from other countries asking why we don't do more for gun control here, the answer is that the majority of people here want stronger gun control laws but our politicians are cowards. That's not to say that stronger laws would have stopped what happened today, I haven't heard yet if the guy had any type of criminal record or diagnosis for mental illness but I doubt that he did. That still doesn't change that fact that we do need stronger laws that make it harder for people to acquire guns if they shouldn't have them to begin with.

A well funded program offering services for people with mental illness might help. I think America has a mental health crises and people with serious issues don't know where to turn for help or fearvlosing their job.

Some of them self medicate on alcohol or drugs then either self dedtruct or rot in prison after being arrested for possession dui.

Others have pent up emotions or persecution complexes that finally lead to them lashing out with violence.

Who's worse now? A killer or a racist?Assuming they were.

The first step is comprehensive research by the government. We need data to better understand the problem.

More guns is clearly not the answer. We have had record gun sales over the last several years.

One thing I'm not for is empowering Criminals, Racists, Terrorists, etc and letting them dictate through their abusive actions what freedoms and everyday privileges good law abiding people can and cant have.

1. More police.
2. Stronger penalties for gun crimes.
3. Better background checks.
4. If a felon is stopped with a gun it should be a mandatory 30 years plus.
5. Some liability on the people selling the guns to just anyone that can pass a background check. Use some judgement skills. You can refuse to make the sale if you don't feel comfortable with the person buying the gun.

That's a start.

Maybe start at the source i.e. the manufacturers. There should be some bigger responsibility on them to make sure their products are being sold legally, but I'm guessing they make a ton of money selling to whoever.

There should be a stricter system in place. Owning a gun should be a privilege not a right, and only non-criminals without any history of mental illness should be allowed to own one.

And maybe people shouldn't be allowed to buy guns other than hand guns and hunting rifles, and everyone should be required to obtain a license where they have to take a course, like with driving you generally take lessons and have to pass an exam.

Imagine anyone could drive a car, that didn't have any lessons or test? Yikes!

Anyway, doubt anything ever gets better with regards to guns in the USA. It's a part of the fabric of your nation unfortunately.

While racism is despicable and unpleasant, it can be ignored and mostly unharmful. He could have just gave her/them a slap and went about living his life.

Killing somebody and taking away all they are and ever will be is totally pointless unless it is a necessity to save a life.

For most of the 1990s and the subsequent decade, a substantial majority of Americans believed it was more important to control gun ownership than to protect gun owners’ rights. But in December 2014, the balance of opinion flipped: For the first time, more Americans say that protecting gun rights is more important than controlling gun ownership, 52% to 46%.

context is bold, pew and the american people disagree with you in the latest poll...

Blame the great republican saint ronald reagan, he stripped mental health funding in the 1980s, also blame those who want to make everything a mental health issue (i'm looking at you APA).

I think the America that was founded with gun rights in mind was much different. Now its filled with a nation of sissies that pretend to be tough and shoot people because their little feelings are hurt. It'd be great if we could base laws around the majority of responsible gun owners, but that number is obviously in decline.

The latest poll doesn't show that. That was the first and only poll to show a slight majority.

Currently, 50% say it is more important to control gun ownership, while 47% say it is more important to protect the right of Americans to own guns.

Regardless of how they feel about that question, the majority of Americans support background checks for all sales, preventing mentally ill from possessing guns, a federal database to track sales, and banning assault weapons.

Even worse yet the camera mans fiancée saw him get shot/killed live, as she is the producer of their morning show. It was her (and his) last day on the show, she received a job at another station and he was to leave with her.
