"Today Sony Online Entertainment opened a new website for its unannounced project, apparently codenamed H1Z1. The website can be found here, and it shows just a rather eerie landscape for the moment."

"President John Smedley mentioned on Twitter that the game will be fully unveiled with gameplay footage tomorrow."

"He also clarified that we’ll be able to play it fully “soon,” seemingly indicating that we’re already quite close to the game’s release or beta."

"Following Smedley’s previous hints, word on the street is that the title will be a post-apocalyptic survival horror sandbox MMORPG with plenty of zombies to slaughter. Smedley also went on record saying that those that loved the sandbox elements of the now defunct Star Wars Galaxies would appreciate the new game.

"There’s still no word about the platforms, but if recent Sony Online Entertainment patterns are any indication it’ll probably head to PC first followed by PS4 after a while."

H1Z1 is an MMO that allows players to take on the role of an apocalypse survivor who is in a world that is filled with zombies. A world! Not just a little tiny server.

You can play it yourself soon. and by play I mean play fully

Jesus Christ, another zombie game? When will it end? Let's just be thankful the vampire game fad never came about. Sigh.....

The atmosphere looks cool in this game and I love the creative ways they're using 'natural' light in the two screens.

Dead Rising does so well on the Xbox It just seem's like Sony wanted their own version of it. I'm disappointed personally, not the kind of game I enjoy playing. Personal opinion of course.

First impressions/questions:

1. What are the RPG elements? I get that it's a bunch of people running around trying to survive a zombie apocalypse, joining up together to build forts or whatnot, but are there quests and levelling up systems? I'd like to hear about those.

2. He says, "Look at the world, it's gorgeous," but actually, it looks pretty bland. I know it's alpha and maybe a bad capture, though.

3. The way he describes it, the whole world is PvP. I hope that's not the case, because I don't think I'd enjoy playing that style all the time. I think it would feel like a big free-for-all deathmatch with zombies thrown in. If I'm going to play MP, I'm more interested in co-op than PvP.

4. I'm not a big fan of zombie games or MP, so I'm going to be a hard sell.

5. I wonder if there's going to be a subscription. Hope not.

6. It's an interesting game concept, something we haven't seen on console before -- not on this scale, anyway, and I'm sure there are other new gameplay elements as well. So kudos for that.

Sounds like it is going to be like Day-Z only massively multiplayer. It will be F2P like all SOE games.

All I know about Day-Z is that you're constantly getting f*cked over by other players. Doesn't sound like much fun to me (unless you're the other player).

Gameplay Details
  • First Person or Third Person shooter
  • Zombie Survival
  • Night is dark and full of terrors
  • More than just zombies in the world
  • Base Building, Town building, Fortress creation
  • Can burn down things others build.
  • Lots of crafting. Probably the biggest thing about the game.
  • Vehicles are already in. Possibility of aircraft in the future.
  • Based off the United States.
  • If you die, you lose your gear
  • "No skills or levels".
  • "Thousands of players". I'm willing to bet this will be larger, playercount wise, than planetside 2.
Tech Details
  • PC first, PS4 later. "Well, we are Sony" when asked about the PS4 version.
  • "If you can run Planetside 2, you can run H1Z1 better".
  • "Orders of magnitude larger than Planetside 2".
  • Based of Planetside 2. Shares no tech with Everquest Next (so no Voxels).
Monetization Details
  • Free to play
  • Part of the All-Access subscription that SOE is launching this month. $15/mo for premium sub in all SOE games.
  • "you seriously don't need to spend a dime. We're still figuring out the monetization but we will telegraph our plans early and let people comment and we'll listen if they don't like something and come to a place where people feel good about it."

Does not compute. Is it behind a paywall?

Free to play with cash shop for vanity and convenience items is pretty much how SOE handles everything now. They also offer an optional premium plan that gives you bonuses to progression and things like extra character slots as well, but it really isn't necessary.

Hello Kitty Zombie Adventure is on the horizon.

I want a open world horror game with all mythical beasts. Mummies, Werewolves, Vampires, Zombies, so on and so forth.

I have also always thought now that Bethesda owns Id, they should do a Fallout style open world Doom game. Like a remake of Doom 2 Hell on earth.

Being an MMO I seriously thing they should have took a page out of DAY z's book at had zombies be rather scarce and the main threat as other human beings.

Oh, and F2P, puts huge doubt on potential game quality.:(

"No skills or levels," so not really an MMORPG, more like an MMOZA (zombie apocalypse). Good that it is F2P. I'm not all that enthused, but we'll see what else we find out tomorrow. Maybe some interesting grouping or co-op elements will draw me in.

Those 2 photos remind me of War Z. Such an under-rated game.

Yeah, not sure where the RPG is coming from. I suppose with it being F2P they would have to have you buy each skill and level

Looks very similar to DayZ. Hopefully it does turn out good because It seems like a fun game to play with friends.

I hear it's coming to Steam early access in about 6 to 8 weeks, in alpha/beta form. So maybe we'll get some impressions then. I'll move this to the MP/PC forum, since it'll probably be PC-only for a while. Hopefully it won't take too long to reach PS4. I'd like to give a try.
