Evening gentlemen,

I am clueless when it comes to desktop use and or gaming can you please assist me on building a mac on the apple website. I know the base product I want is $2299.00 and includes:

3.3GHz Processor
2TB Storage

  • 3.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor
  • Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
  • 8GB (two 4GB) memory, configurable up to 32GB
  • 2TB Fusion Drive1
  • AMD Radeon R9 M395 with 2GB video memory
  • Retina 5K 5120-by-2880 P3 display
http://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/imac

BUT

when you select said desktop your given a load of choices in regards to upgrades before you buy it (this is the part that confuses me) is the above enough? or is there more I should add?

Thanks in advance.

Looks great but I would go with 16gb of RAM minimum.

If you're serious about computer gaming a Mac may not be your best option. Either way I agree on going 16GB. Also as far as I'm aware of the new iMacs are like the MacBook Pro in that there is no upgrading in the future. Everything (except maybe the HDD) is soldered right into the logic board.

Yes, but to be fair, it's soldered on with solid gold Apple Logos, which is why it's worth the massive premium over any non-Apple alternative.

This is true. He would have to go with a Mac Pro, the big desktop version, to be able to swap out.

It's not really for gaming maybe the odd game but that's a BIG maybe. It's more for family every day use.

So far Hardware:
  • 3.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
  • 16GB 1867MHz DDR3 SDRAM - two 8GB
  • 2TB Fusion Drive
  • AMD Radeon R9 M395X with 4GB video memory
  • Magic Mouse 2
  • Magic Keyboard (English) & User’s Guide
  • Accessory Kit.
Does that look ok for maybe some gaming ext?

The 4GB GPU is definitely a better choice. That's pretty much the base for GPUs on PC now so I would recommend with that for a bit of future proofing. Of the 184 games I have on Steam 76 of them are Mac compatible so there's still a good list.

Interesting, I didn't think the Mac had a market that big, I think I will get what I posted above for about ÂŁ3k all in.

I'll take a guess and say that you could get a PC just as powerful and you'd save $500-1,000.

Interesting but without a monitor, so the cost would be relativaly the same after. The iMac above is also more powerful although $1k more of course thanks though Plainview.
It's not more powerful though. The Mac Pro has two six core processors compared to one four core processor. You can add up to 128 gig of memory if you choose. The Mac Pro eats up iMacs. My Mac Pro 1,1 beasts my work iMac.
