Help Picking a New TV

Nice receiver too.
Yamaha. No HDMI on it..........

Something I handed down to my dad. So optical cable from TV to receiver if he wants that full tower speaker sound (used to be a 5.1 system, now it's 3.0)

That LG tv has very good sound I gotta admit.

I personally don't do TV speaker sound, it's headphones or stereo. Used to do 5.1 surround (real surround) but can't really do that in my smaller room. Well, I could, but it would be a very rare occasion where I could actually take advatage of it due to other people in the house yelling "turn that s*** down".

Which is a bummer, I also play guitar and have really nice vintage guitar stuff, can't play it open air unless everyone is out of the house. Sucks.

@Zer0beaT dono if this may help?

I think that's the old "soap opera" effect?

I linked him to the dedicated LGG3/C3 AVS forum thread a while ago, he's actually reading the whole thing HAHA. It's got like 5000 posts in it I think. Eventually he'll get to the bit where people post some great settings.

Haven't asked how far in he's made it last time I asked he was on page 17.

So I have the LG C3, and the Bose Ultimate Soundbar. The problem I am experiencing is that when I change my TV channels on the cable box, sometimes it takes a few seconds for the sound to kick in. If the sound doesn't kick in, I just do channel up or channel down and then go back to the channel I want to watch and the sound is on.

I have my HDMI ARC on the back of the TV going to the soundbar.

I love you KarmaKid.................

But holy crap. I live in Canada,

It's the same price it was both here and in the USA.

Not trying to be a jerk at all btw. Not at all.

I live in Canada and earn Candian wage and pay in Loonies and Twoonies.

That is the same price my dad payed for his C3 during black friday sales.

Also, I'm actually really happy with my old Sony HX850 46" 1080p and don't even want a 4k TV now that I've experienced my dad's OLED.

He needs to tweek the picture way more. I honestly think my TV as set up (I've got it dialed in) has a much nicer more natural looking picture...........blasphemy!!!!!!!!!

I gotta take a picture (with my phone but it should show what I mean) what I'm talking about.

Like, the LGC3 is overly detailed, vs my old Sony which just looks nice.

The C3 has got to be able to be set up better. There's no doubt it can be, but you have to take the time to do that and my dad just watches soccer games all day.

They both look good, the tip send to have a cooler filter on, where the bottom seems warmer, a bit more fitting for the scene. Don’t get me wrong I love the cooler one but friends are trying to sway me to the warm side lol which I love and appreciate too
The top is the 2023 OLED the bottom is the 10+ year old Sony HX850.

Same video file btw.

Since I posted this, I went downstairs and showed my dad the difference.

He put the OLED through all the different scene modes. Cinematic looks so much better.

So I'm like "dad, that is where you start, have that setting on all your inputs and work from there"

He was reading the AVS forum thread about this TV, which is where he COULD get the perfect settings, unfortunately that thread is like 6000 posts long........

He just needs to fine tune it. No way my TV should look better than his. The stuff that does look good on the OLED really freakin' pops out. I'll be having one and immediately get the best most natural and detailed picture I can get out of it.

He's just being lazy. He's getting lazy about everything tbh (he's 80 years old)

These are photos from my phone. LG looks worse than it actually does, but it needs work with the picture settings.

My Sony I wouldn't call warm looking, for me that would be a plasma TV (I miss plasma) but more just shockingly natural looking for an LED tv from over 10 years ago.

And even though this is my TV, I'm fully Plasma/OLED, so I'm disappointed that my dad bought this tv and isn't taking the time to fine tune the picture........lol

Ticks me off a bit if I'm being honest because I'd love a new 4k OLED tv and I wouldn't be happy with those crap settings and would do something about it.

Hoketly, when it comes down to it, we’re all lazy 😆 ;) but I think hdtvtest, rtings or digital trends post their settings. But all TVs aren’t exactly the same, so it could be used as a baseline and tweak from there. Unless he wants to hire a pro calibrator, I know there’s those sensors ya stick on the screen to calibrate them, I haven’t looked into it tbo.

Maybe calibrate it for him, say it’s an early birthday present, one of many more to come

He agreed that cinema mode looks better, that's a start. "but I'm watching soccer, not a movie"

That's what I'm dealing with. Gonna take some time.

There are heaps of details you can change for each picture setting, I'm assuming your dad's is the top one? Those settings can work well for games, for movies/TV I have my settings to cinema which can give the look of your TV with usually more detail.

I’m pretty sure there’s a few others here who have a c2, I think @Kvally does, but I think he is, like many I’ve see comment, having issues with some sound bars
C3 here. And yes, soundbar issues. But it seems related to the soundbar and my cable box.

Exactly. Start with Cinema mode on this LGC3 because it clearly looks better, go from there.

Don't worry I have shamed him (I love him more than anyone btw, but just let me trash talk him on here haha)

It can't be that hard. I could do the work for him but I shouldn't have to and he should be learning his own TV, he's capable of doing that. He reads manuals from start to end, I throw them out.

So for me personally, IF I could buy a new TV right now, it'd be this:

But I'd be super interested in their Mini-LED but they don't make a 55", it starts at 65" which is too big for my situation.

Doesn't matter, new TV for me ain't happening this year. Maybe next year.
I’m on the fence for a new TV, kinda spent some money elsewhere, and trying to pay off my cards 😆 but with the new TVs I’ve seen, if there’s a good deal I just may 😆

I've had a big change of heart over the last year about my TV, 4k, the whole 120fps gsync/freesync stuff.

Sounds awesome.

But, do I really need that? My current setup is totally satisfying for me at this time, and if I got a new TV I'd also have to get a new A/V reciever.........

And I want to upgrade............next year.

For me a new tv, in my room, will serve dual purpose, as a tv and monitor for work, and since I hear good things about the c3/g3 I may get one of those, again cos I hear it’s a good alternative to a reference monitor…even tho I’ll be using it as a second screen.

I’m with ya on some things tho, I don’t need 120+ hz or g/free sync. Just need accurate colors, cos I’m color blind 😆 and would have it out the box goodness or have it professionally calibrated.

You just need to go to the AVS forums and find your TV model that has a dedicated thread, there are pro calibrators in there that post their settings.

And then just regular people who have tinkered with those settings. And you can really dial in a perfect picture or close to.
